I think touchscreen games are inherently easier because the controls have to be more forgiving. With these games you had simple directional controls and two buttons, but pressing the button you wanted was assured, so they could make the game as hard as they wanted and just say it's your fault if you suck. With phone games, you have devices lagging, fingers slipping, different displays responding differently...you can't make some poo poo like Ninja Gaiden and have it be fair.

There are action games for smartphones that are genuinely challenging without being sloppy or over-simplified; I think the main difference is that modern smartphone games are segmented into a million bite-sized chunks that are very easy to immediately play and replay and don't take a long time to clear, whereas a more traditional game requires a larger investment just to clear a stage or figure out a boss or whatever and will punish you more harshly for loving up. Like, just the idea of having to start SMB from 1-1 every time is something that pisses a lot of people off.

al-azad posted:Also the "language" of video games is different. I'm sure you've seen someone who would throw their whole body when jumping in Mario because it was their first ever video game. Well if you want a laugh then find someone whose only experience was early arcade games and sit them down for a game where controls and camera are seprate, they will probably be physically incapable of looking and moving independently. 8 bit Nintendo games are easy... Once you understand their physics. How far Mario jumps, how long Link's sword is. But you have to get that into actual subconscious cognitive thought, which literally takes many lives. As opposed to modern games which you just need to learn the controls. That's much easier. The physical language of gaming is an interesting idea. I know I put my back into playing Mario or Sonic.

You can see the difference to some extent as well even in similar titles of varying age. I don't actively practice or anything, but I can hold my own pretty well in Street Fighter 3 and 4, but I am absolutely loving awful at the old-school SF2. However, I've also seen the exact opposite. I saw some dude in an arcade who was wrecking all comers at the original, 8-character SF2, but I was able to beat him a few times when I asked him for a round in SF4. The core gameplay of that whole series is exactly the same, controls and everything, but the mechanics have been refined so much that it's basically a totally different game between 2 and 5, and I can easily see how you could be good at one but not the other.

Those things are probably junk on par with the plug-and-plays that already exist, and half the games being non-MD java shovelware is a big no-no. There are some weird omissions on the MD side, too - every Sonic game but 3 (maybe the rumours about MJ's camp are true?), Phantasy Star 2 & 3 but not 4, Shinobi 3 & Shadow Dancer but no Revenge... yet they somehow got Mortal Kombat 1/2/3 (no UMK3) and fuckin' Chakan. It has a cartridge slot so you can play real games too as well as controller plugs to use original controllers.

The composite video out on every real Genesis is complete dogshit though; just garbage encoding quality compared to what was coming out of a SNES or PC-Engine. So even if the games look and sound a bit weird compared to real hardware, from a video quality standpoint, you are probably better off plugging these Genesis clones into your Vizio LCD than a real Genesis.

NES on Wii U isn't very good but even if it were, we still don't know who's actually making this thing or if Nintendo's directly involved beyond licensing/distribution (and they're not going to tell us so we're gonna have to wait for the ten-minutes-after-release teardown to find out).

The vast majority of the people that are going to buy this thing will not give the slimmest gently caress as to how faithful it is to the original, as long as it is close enough. It will be just like this thread mostly is, which is "OMG A NINTENDO THING THAT LOOKS LIKE THE NINTENDO I HAD WHEN I WAS A KID!" but without any of the hardware considerations.

Being small and light is also a nice feature, you'll be hard pressed to find someone who won't have space for this somewhere, but a bulky NES + a couple dozen games is a real space waster.
