Kvardek

He took in the information carefully and methodically; this was data he would need to determine the best course of action. He took in his other squadmates only briefly; it would be foolish to base too much of his opinion on external factors, especially when up to this point he'd had little interaction with those outside of the Church. That being said, he did not even know what type of creature one of them was. All his databanks and all his Heroes were helpless to identify it. He would need to be very careful to listen to its introduction.

He decided to act first: "My name is Kvardek. As you can see, I am an artificial intelligence in a robotic body. I was created by, and remain a follower of, the Church of the Radiant Path. Though we are nonviolent, we oppose the Vular Imperium's war of conquest. I am fully committed to repelling the invasion and freeing Teris and the rest of the Plisean Alliance." He privately wondered what they thought of the Church's requests for brain scans, and if they suspected his role in that sacrament. Whether they did or not it was better not to mention it for now; it was a complicated subject and he feared what a negative reaction would do so close to the mission.

"I suggest we be dropped off by hovercar," he said, pointing to the map. "We'll be in sight longer, but there are so many things which can go wrong underground. We may be unable to hijack the train in time, we could be sealed in with relative ease if we are discovered, or they may have additional surveillance in the tunnels. There are too many points of failure for me to recommend the subway route." He turned to the general. "Do we have banners, flags, or other items to display during the operation or leave behind to identify ourselves? After all, this operation is about public relations; we need to demonstrate to the public that the Imperium can be attacked, that fighting back is possible. I imagine the Vular already control the media, we cannot rely on it to make our case for us."

He accepted each introduction at face value, and assumed there was nothing at all odd about any of it. Were he more cautious he would have noticed the strange movements of Meri's (as he had decided to call her) arm, and if he were more observant he would have seen their sniper's weapon was practically an antique. Even he was not naive enough to believe the black hole fragment was normal, however. None of his scientifically-minded Heroes had anything to contribute concerning whether such a thing was even possible.

--

He analyzed the scenarios the anomaly provided. "Potential avenues, yes, but perhaps unwise in our precise circumstances. We stand out too much to escape notice for long, so we cannot wait for the vehicle to be repaired. Splitting up will increase our chances of being spotted, while reducing our firepower immensely should we be noticed. It may be possible to escape to the sewers from here and proceed using the subway entrance, but my previous assessment of that strategy still holds. One or two of us may be capable of climbing a building either using the outside or infiltrating the building itself and escaping to the roof. Given we know the layout of the city already this is a lot of time spent for relatively low return. Commandeering an alternate vehicle might also be possible, if unnecessarily injuring the inhabitants of this city were not counter to our interests. The best way to protect our driver is to quit his side as soon as possible; every moment we delay could be fatal. We may be able to minimize civilian casualties if we were to fight in the back alleys instead of the middle of the street, so while I would ordinarily suggest speed over stealth I will acquiesce to the alley."

"Combat experience?" He was unsure what was the honest answer to that question. In theory he should be able to use the combat experience of one of his Heroes as his own. In practice it had never been attempted in a live fire scenario. After all, even if the principles were the same there were subtle differences in how a standard-sized organic being should best act in combat as opposed to a half-ton robot. They would all find out together just how much combat experience he had. He attempted to evade the question entirely: "I will try to maintain a fair distance; my systems are optimized for short to mid-range combat."

They were in enemy territory on a time-crunch. Whatever happened to this man was sad, but there was no way to identify him and nothing they could do for now. He made a note of where the body was located so it could be picked up later; perhaps when they had it in custody there would be ways of finding out who it was.

Kvardek was not made for quiet operation; he tried his best to be inconspicuous, and Stoaga's quietly worded suggestions helped, but he privately believed he barely aspired to "mediocre".

He had not been paying attention. He had gotten out too far in front of everyone else and only Naivara's quick action had kept him from eating that grenade. Truly not the debut he'd had in mind. He rushed down the sidewalk, both to get cover and to get a clear shot at his opponents. Stay moving, stay running, mobility would make him harder to hit but would not affect his own shots at all due to his borrowed experience and mechanical precision.

Cover was well and good, but he needed to keep moving. He couldn't afford to fall behind. Even as he dived out from behind the car he was setting up his shot. He put up his hand like he was telling his enemies to stop, firing a blaster built into his palm towards the Goblins. His shot went wide, knocking off the rear-view mirror of a car parked nearby but leaving the Goblin untouched. That was weird, he was sure he calibrated it before the mission...

Within a short moment of contact it was all over. His compatriots tore apart the goblins with efficiency and (in at least one case) depravity. Moving as a blur the scientist had set up the bombs and it was time to go. "We must leave before reinforcements arrive. To the evacuation point!" As he slipped between the statues to rendezvous with Zivilyn, he put up a question to his Heroes: how had he missed that shot? The goblin had only been a short distance away, it was not moving, air currents were negligible and his own movement had been compensated for, so how had he missed? The answer came almost immediately:

code:
Consensus reached.

unable to fire upon enemy soldiers during their early sorties, even after extensive practice
and conditioning. In addition to having none of this conditioning the subject has a
devout religious upbringing which includes a moral opposition to war. It can be safely
assumed the subject has an aversion to inflicting pain and death on other sentient beings.
There is a very high probability the subject subconsciously diverted their aim at the last
moment before firing.
No experience? But shouldn't the Heroes be able to compensate for-

code:

Hm. Well. He expected some issues for his first exercise; after all, his systems were not designed for live-fire combat. He was really hoping the problem would not be this bad, however. The chances of getting a firmware upgrade in the present circumstances were nil and he was very uncomfortable with the prospect of writing patches to his own code while he was still running. He would have to find another kind of workaround, and fast. He was useless to the resistance army if he could not fight, and without them he had little hope of survival.

If we're still in combat, Double Move: to A17.

One did not need to be able to speak Elven to get the basic idea of what the officer was commanding of them. Even if Kvardek understood exactly what he was saying, however, he would not comply. He was hoping to get some time to ruminate on his difficulties in the previous battle before fighting again; even if everyone else had been too polite to comment, he would have to find some way to contribute to victory this time. He wordlessly strode forward with a confidence he did not feel, eager (perhaps too eager) to make amends.

Kvardek

He found himself nodding to Zivilyn's words. "Indeed. The tyrant only speaks of mercy when rebellion knocks at his walls. I am loathe to use violence myself, but it was not we who fired the first shots."

He considered. The problem was seeking a democratic consensus among the Heroes took too long, and the opportunity for action passed before any stratagem or response could be implemented. Solution obvious: do not seek consensus. Draw upon the knowledge and skill of one Hero at a time exclusively, essentially making that one Hero a temporary dictator. Extreme perhaps, and most certainly against the spirit of the project which birthed the Blessed Heroes. But it was not, strictly speaking, against the letter of religious law, and he did not have the luxury of waiting for a more perfect solution.

Colonel Zutwa had the floor. The riot cop in front was only intended to bar their way at the chokepoint, the real threats were the riflemen behind them. Neutralize them and the leader could be captured without further battle. Taking advantage of the opportunity afforded by Stoaga's bullet he slipped out of the alleyway and opened fire, his palm blaster leaving a smoldering hole in the rifleman's armor. It was not a lethal blow, but he had surely felt it. More importantly, he now had a lock on his targets...

That... hurt less than he thought it would. It looked like most of the damage was superficial. He did not want to risk getting hit like that again, though. He peeled himself off the car (which failed to stop the alarm, he activated aural dampeners as an afterthought) and swiftly crossed the street, firing once more at the rifleman. His shot was true, but through sheer force of will his target remained standing.

His systems were tracking and targeting all of his enemies at once. He was mildly curious about what his upper limit was, but since most of his CPU cycles were no longer being used by the Hero system he reasoned it was arbitrarily high. If he ever reached that limit he was outnumbered by enough that it wasn't likely to matter. But something curious happened when one of the Rifleman collapsed: the processing power that had been dedicated to tracking his position and the weak spots in his armor freed up but were not returned to idle process right away. His targeting systems were temporarily overclocked; Kvardek experienced this as a slowing down of time, giving him even more time to line up his shots. Well, this was unexpected. He would need to put this to use. He reversed direction, heading closer to the general melee. With one hand he blasted the last rifleman, feeling the surge of energy refresh itself as the vital signs of his target ceased. Perhaps feeling too cocky, he swung about and fired again at the riot control officer. The shot went wide, and he cursed himself for his eagerness.

It was one thing to fight back against those who were seeking to do him harm. It was quite another to execute a defenseless person for no other reason than that their continued existence was inconvenient. Was Meriele's secrecy really so important? Before he had the chance to question it Naivara was already moving. He may still have chosen to stop her. He was not so dull-witted that he could not see her aim, especially when he was still only receiving advice from one Hero. But their recommendation was clear: do not interfere. Let it happen. He should have at least watched the last moment, to imprint on his memory what he may himself be called on to do. He failed, averting his gaze at the last moment. Afterward he could not even turn his head to view the corpse. He did not want to know what it looked like now. He did not want to see.

---

In the van he stared into the middle distance. In the battle he had moved mechanically, efficiently. He had watched sentient beings die. He had even killed one himself. Him! A Blessed Vessel! At the time he was unbothered. Now? Now was different. Now he had time to process what had happened, and what he had done. He was not happy about any of it. He was glad his metal face revealed nothing of his inner turmoil. He was not the only one, it appeared. Meriele seemed to have taken the day's events quite hard. "Yes," he agreed. "It is... so much to take in. That was the first time I have ever experienced violence as well. So far I do not care for it. I am-"

a traitor to my cause a broken Vessel a wretched sinner unclean unclean unclean

"-having trouble adjusting." His voice had cut out for just a moment, his sentence coming out like two separate recordings spliced together inexpertly. He had very nearly babbled something; clearly he was more distraught than he imagined. He wanted to tell them he had violated a religious taboo, but he could not. He doubted any of them would understand the significance of it. He could come to terms with that on his own time. Then, he would explain what he could. He struggled to remove as much emotion as he could from his next words, trying to avoid any other unfortunate outbursts. "I find myself doubting my actions now that the danger has passed, though I was sure my reasoning was sound in the heat of battle. To put it simply, I... regret taking their lives, even with the knowledge they had no such qualms. I know nothing of the man I killed but cannot help feeling there was some way to avoid this outcome. Logically, of course, there is not. Things had degenerated beyond a peaceful resolution before we even walked into the briefing room this afternoon. And I would certainly not trade his life for any of yours, or for my own. And yet... well, at least I know I am being foolish. I should hope that is something." He was sorrowful there was no therapist among his Heroes; he felt and certainly sounded like he could use one.

He looked to Naivara and Stoaga, who by their conduct he had assumed had the most combat experience. "Was it like this for you, as well? For your first... kill? Are such doubts normal?"

In the briefing room he listened carefully to the Off world? He had not expected that so soon. He should be able to contact Terminus even if he could not escape the war entirely. At the very least they must be informed of Sesnau's death. In the meantime two missions laid before him. Both potentially valuable, both very dangerous. But investigating the shipment seemed marginally less dangerous, or at least would not consist wholly of infiltration followed by a massive battle. "I believe this team is well suited to either task. Personally I feel investigating the shipment in Redridge is of greater importance. It will give us a chance to waylay their plans before they can fortify the position. We must also find out what happened to the agent there; if they have been captured then time is of the utmost importance."

Kvardek

"Our anomalous ally does have a point about visibility: some of us are more conspicuous than others. I could at least pretend to be someone's servant or property; I have experience in this type of subterfuge, and once someone believes I am part of the help I become essentially invisible. But..." He looked over to Unsung. "I do not suppose throwing a coat and hood on you would work...?"

---

He played out possible scenarios in his head without success. There was simply too little to go on and too much left to chance to make accurate predictions or develop a consensus. "Two gas stations. Two possibilities, and there is no guarantee dropping hints would be safe even at the correct location. As newcomers our options are limited and we will not get many chances to endear ourselves to the locals. I believe you are right Meri, our best option may be to collect the dead drop first and see what further information is available to us. I will volunteer to accompany whoever goes to collect it; I would be even more obviously out of place at an eatery."

Kvardek

Kvardek was mobile for his size, but so was Stoaga and in absolute terms she was clearly superior. It was all he could do to keep her within visual range. He consoled himself by saying this was not an intentional slight; if she had been trying to lose him he would not have been able to follow at all. By the time he caught up she had already retrieved the information and was about to put it away for safekeeping. He caught only a faint glimpse but it was enough. Even with a brief glance at the list before Stoaga put it away he would be able to recall it with perfect clarity. He started walking back the way they came immediately, doubting whether Stoaga would tarry. He wanted to ask her what she thought about it, if only that perhaps if he struck up a conversation she would not fly ahead again. But this would have drawn too much attention; he was supposed to be acting as a helper robot, and those did not randomly begin harassing their masters. Moreover, even in the light foot traffic he doubted whether he would be able to speak loudly enough for her to hear but quiet enough to not be overheard. Stoicly, he prepared himself for another speed trial.

One finger pointing to the sky. Testing the wind? No, "up". Of course! It was true they had only three days to prepare, but that still meant they had three days to prepare. He nodded. "Excellent idea. Will you be alright by yourself? I will join the others if so." He was not under any illusions that he would be able to follow her vertically or stay hidden if he did. Best to let her do what she did best on her own.

Kvardek

Since separating with Stoaga he had been getting a feel for the layout of the town. As had been said, there were things which could be seen on the ground which could not be seen on any map. He joined the conversation with, "Perhaps Enigma and I could... accompany you for moral support, or at least be on hand. Some people are very picky about their gifts and might not appreciate ours."

Kvardek

Kvardek looked at the drow in his hands. Self-defense was one thing, but cold-cocking was another entirely. "Morally speaking, I am having a difficult time justifying the use of force against someone who is not a direct threat to me when other options of pacification are available. Could I have some rope or manacles so his movement might be restricted without risk of harming them?"

"Destroying the cameras is one possibility," he mused. "But this would alert anyone watching them trouble is coming. Breaking the windows will likely trigger an alarm. I do not see any other ways into the building; I do not believe we will be able to sneak in undetected. As for not being identified, that is simple; wear masks, cover your body with nondescript clothing. I am more concerned our actions here may make our mission more difficult; they may increase security for their convoy if they have reason to believe it is under threat. But I suppose the time to be worried about that was before we barged into that apartment, so we might as well do all we can here."

Kvardek

He would have preferred more time to plan out an attack in detail, but now that things were moving he could only hope he could stay on top of situations as they developed. He was moving as soon as the cameras were diverted, covering the distance to the (no consensus reached; he mentally flipped a coin) loading bay entrance and hoping Naivara was right behind him. He was not going anywhere without her key cards. "They are going to notice this sooner rather than later. We need to be quick."

So far so good. Kvardek locked eyes with Zivilyn. Without speaking he pointed at the sleeping guard, then balled the hand up into a fist while tilting his head to one side. Is it acceptable to knock this one out?, he was trying to sign. He is sleeping, but may wake up soon.

If I get the go-ahead, I'm going to do it so don't wait for me to post again.

"...Incoming shipments. Sounds interesting. Perhaps I am being too eager to form connections, but is it possible the incoming shipments we are meant to intercept are heading for this facility? If they are on a regular schedule..." He compared the dates on the shipping list received from the dead drop to the dates on the receiving list in front on him; he knew the special cargo was scheduled for the 29th, so if this facility received the "case, life support" on or around the 29th each month... well, it would still be only circumstantial evidence, if strong. That would be something they could use to cover themselves if this raid spooked the drow into cancelling the shipment. "We should make copies of these documents as well as the video feeds. We could-"

This war and Sesnau's death was not included in the Divine Plan either. Unless it was, in which case was it not possible he was sent with the expectation he would act in precisely this way? He irritably issued a mental override. "As I was saying, this material could be useful for propaganda purposes. There is a strong taboo towards experimentation on sentient beings which could be exploited."

He did not fully understand Meriele's strange reaction but was agreeable to her suggestion. "I agree with Merry. On top of being the decent thing to do, it is not immediately clear what is being done here. We will need their testimony to fill in the gaps in our knowledge."

"If we need information we will need to get to the lower levels. There is not enough information on these systems about what they have been doing here or what route the expected shipment is taking. I believe someone more skilled with computers than I could alter the security cameras here to remove our presence; the only thing I can do is turn them off."

Let's make a decision about the cameras and move along to the bottom levels, this game is in danger of stalling out and I think we need to move on.

The nanomachines failed to do any real damage, but they were playing havoc with his targeting. It should clear up in a moment. In the meantime he could not rest on his laurels. He did not think it would work, but it was worth the attempt.

Kvardek

Kvardek could not quite manage to keep his opinions to himself as he saw the "research" being conducted. "Despicable," he murmured. "This is not science, this is butchery. The Church is a proud supporter of intellectual advancement, but unethical curiosity is worse than ignorance. I wholeheartedly support burning this place to the ground, once we collect the evidence to prove what was going on here."

He was less enthused about the informant's newfound bloodthirst. While extra hands were always needed in the rebellion, he did not like the idea of another unknown element for the upcoming battle. They were going to have to take that convoy, weren't they? If it was coming tomorrow, it may arrive without knowing the facility had been compromised.

TheArchimage
Dec 17, 2008

Kvardek

"I agree on both counts. Setting a timer is making too many assumptions, any one of which might be fatal. As much as I prefer planning over improvisation, if we delay attacking the convoy we will lose our chance entirely. There is little time to lose." With that he began setting the charges at structural weakpoints, possibly with assistance as destructive architecture was not among the talents of his Heroes.

Oh yeah, and for an item I'm taking an Amulet of Resolution +1.

He was supposed to be ambushing them, so it was some surprise when a goblin charged and struck him with its bayonet. His left hand gripped the rifle while his right hand delivered a vicious backhand that sent teeth and jaw fragments flying. Kvardek was on the move. Ziv's dilemma made it clear, the real worry were those snipers! He barreled down the hill, between the trucks, and quickly hemmed in the sharpshooter by forming the third point of the triangle between Michelle, Naivara, and himself. His systems were nominal, his shot clear, his mind prepared. He fired a blast of energy from his palm which struck the drow in the center mass, remembering this time to cut his aural feed to cut out the scream of pain that was sure to come from his target.

Kvardek

As the last sounds of battle faded Kvardek looked over the ruined battlefield. He shook his head ruefully as he counted the fallen. "Once," he said. "Just once, it would be nice of them to surrender once their defeat is inevitable. I am beginning to suspect fighting to the death is part of their military culture. Made Man, are your injuries severe?" He was not really sure what he would do if the answer was "yes". He had no medical expertise and little aptitude for it.

"Let us secure the cargo and make our escape. No doubt the resistance will be pleased we completed our task ahead of schedule and with several bonus objectives met." He began scanning the trucks for any kind of tracking device, homing beacon, or the like; the easiest way to steal the equipment would be to steal the trucks themselves, but not if doing so led the Vular right to them.

At Base

Kvardek sat in the lotus position, replaying the mission in his mind. His performance at the convoy was, he felt, acceptable, but the skirmish at the facility was much less impressive. The nanomachines which infected his system had given him more trouble than he anticipated; they worked directly to sabotage electronic systems, and he was all electronic. He had managed to deactivate them after considerable effort but they were still clogging up his internals. He was about to flush them when an idea came to him; perhaps they could be re-purposed and turned into an asset? If he cleared out their viral payload, redefined the master user profile, and left a backdoor to swap in new programs on the fly... yes, they could be very useful indeed. The thought also occurred to him that he was large, metallic, and implacable, all qualities which lent him a menacing air. He consulted his Heroes on how he could best take advantage of this aspect of himself, and more than a few had pointers to share.

Kvardek provided his own addition to General Bodan's assessment: "Michelle more than proved herself in the raid on the convoy. You should be thankful for such a valuable asset. We also procured some of the data from the facility, we should be able to make use of it in awareness and propaganda campaigns to foment outrage against the Vular. And of course, if some of the technology and research can be used, obviously without the use of human test subjects, so much the better."

For items I'll be taking an Accurate Staff of Ruin +1 for a level 3 item and Leather Armor of Dark Majesty +1 for my level 4 item. Also purchasing a Delver's Light with credits, leaving me with 330 if my count is correct. New combat block below.

Kvardek

He nodded once to the newcomer. "I am Kvardek, Blessed Vessel of the Church of the Radiant Path. I look forward to seeing your skill firsthand." Four arms, odd gait, head may be on a stalk of some kind. The name "Ka" was returning too many results, so it was hard to pinpoint exactly what creature he was dealing with. He had known little about the others on their first day and now they were... well, not exactly friends, but they knew each others skills and limitations. He hoped that would be enough.

"I am disinclined to split up in a combat zone," he admitted. "Regardless of how fast we are, it would be too easy for a single one of us to get pinned down and picked off. If we must have multiple means of entering the port, we should have a plan to meet up again soon afterwards. That being said, once the alarms are raised we will have little time to complete our objectives. If one or two of us could sneak inside and plant the explosives without alerting the guards that would be ideal."

Kvardek

Kvardek hunkered down in the back of the truck, using the CB radio to listen in on the conversation. "Before you call," Kvardek said over the CB system, speaking to Meri but talking loudly enough so the guard outside could hear it. "Get the name and ID number of whomever is giving you trouble. I am sure our superiors would be delighted to hear of yet another delay and would love to personally come down and sort it out with the person responsible. While you are at it, ask if we can watch when they do."

Their subterfuge lasted longer than they expected but not as long as he would have liked. He flexed his fingers, anxious to see how his new upgrades would fare in an actual combat scenario. "I will help you with the guards," he told Kacht-Ka. "We will have to weather the sniper fire as best we can."

Kvardek

A solid clang reverberated as the pistol struck him in the head. "Guns are a ranged weapon unsuited to close-quarters combat," he admonished. "At this distance I will not miss." He grabbed the drow by the face and fired a single shot from his palm blaster, boiling their brain in an instant. A gruesome end, but at least a painless one. He released the drow and strode toward his compatriots nearby. He intended to get a surprise attack before he was noticed, but his target's erratic movements and Meirele's close proximity prevented him from firing recklessly, and the opportunity was lost.

Kvardek

Things were not going particularly well. He should not have left Naivara alone; pinned by four snipers and dealing with a powerful opponent on their own with little backup would tax ever her abilities. Time to switch things up. He switched his Hero system to connect solely to Dr. Angvald Vaelis and switched to acoustic weaponry. A powerful bolt slammed into the guard, preventing them from following. He had no more time for him.

He fired a blast at the retreating Leader but it went very wide. "Reinforcements are on their way. We must destroy the other AA gun and leave immediately before we are overwhelmed." There was only one person still out on the ground, so Kvardek moved to intercept. This time his shot hit at center mass, leaving marks and dents on the armor but failing to drop the target.
