There is no escape.

Meriele

Meriele gathers her breath in her seat. It'd been a while since she'd gotten liftoff in a ship, much less a rickety one like this with acceleration like a wild horse. Still, they did it. They were off-world. "Everybody okay?" she asks, looking around. "We...we did it, right? We made it out?" Her thoughts wander, for a moment, back to the melee in the base, to the rebels on the ground, and to the vast reaches of space beyond. Sure, they'd made it out...but now what?

Meriele nods. "We do need the supplies. Let's go to Aelis. Even if it's just for food and drink." She's taken off her protective jacket, and her arm has come off, leaving a purple-and-black hole in her shoulder where the bionic weapon connects. She found some sort of agility-enhancing bracer in the hold, but interfacing it with her weapon was a bit tricky. She'd gotten the hang of making repairs on the go while she was on the run, but adding to her arsenal was a whole other matter. "One problem, though. I'm kind of still a wanted fugitive. Even if they don't have holos of our images once they find out who was actually on the shuttle that left Terisian orbit, they will have likely have mine. We'll need to be careful." The elf sticks her tongue out of the corner of her mouth in concentration as she focuses on soldering the bracer to connect to the circuits of her arm. "Well, it's not pretty, but it should hold. Can somebody help me get this back on?" She picks up her arm and lifts it, waving haphazardly at the rest of the crew with a gentle smile.

"It's not as bad as it looks, really. Just had to perform some maintenance. Just pick it up and, uh..." Meriele hands Naivara her arm, then gestures at the connecting joint on her shoulder. "Right here, see the connectors? Those correspond to these and these...they're magnetized in some way, I think, just make sure you line them up correctly or the arm's going on backwards." The elf grits her teeth in preparation for the connection. It wasn't painful, exactly, but the connection always did leave her a little numb once the initial shock passed through her system. "Ready when you are." Her eyes cross as her nervous system hooks into the electronics of the arm. There's a low whine that echoes throughout the ship's chamber as the quantum engine cranks to life and then settles down, and Meriele is left breathing heavily in discomfort. "Thanks," she grunts, flexing her fingers slowly to make sure everything is still working, "should be fine, now."

Meriele hadn't planned to show her face, keeping it safely hidden behind her cloth mask as she had before - but with bug-boy starting the conversation on the entirely wrong note, she felt like she had no choice. Pulling down her mask, the young elf tries to appear as non-threatening as possible to help sell the lie she was about to produce. "What my companion means to say is our original ship was stolen by pirates, quite possibly aided by somebody from our crew at the time. Thus stranded for quite a while, we had to resort to acquiring this junky old thing from a local shipyard. It's not ideal, I know - but it's the best we could get on short notice." She smiles apologetically. "I can only imagine what it must've looked like when we came into orbit. I assure you, we want just as little trouble as you. Just some time to get some supplies, and then we're on our way." The best lies always held a kernel of truth.

Meriele catches up to Ziv eventually. "Just a question of talking to the right people, big guy." She gives him a half-smile. "C'mon, I think I might've found somebody." Being on the run as she had been, she knew the value of finding the shady sort of people that would accept hot wares without too many questions. She'd never really sold anything as big as a Vular transport...but the principle remained the same, right? A little trickier, perhaps, but the same. Having gotten away with the lie about their ship seemed to have given her some confidence, too - or perhaps it was the absence of drow on the planet - as she'd dispensed with the mask to hide her features.

Streetwise at 1d20+11=29. Also, if possible, would like to use Welcome Guest or Attract Attendants to get some general supplies (fuel, food, etc.) beyond just a new ship. Meriele wouldn't go around advertising her status, but this world seems to be mostly Vular-free, so maybe somebody recognizes her and is willing to help?

Meriele

Her first instinct on being recognized is to run. But panic turns to confusion and then to mollified pride. Adoring fans never failed to bring a smile to her face. "Well, you know how it is. On the run from an empire and all that. Doesn't leave a lot of room for recording...but who knows? Maybe sometime soon." She happily signs the autograph, and for a moment forgets everything about the whole mess; her posture changes, her eyes lack the weariness that kept her alive these past months, and the elegance in her movements reminds those around her of why she was so famous in the past. And hey, who in their right mind would say no to free stuff? "Here you go. Just...keep it quiet, mm? I might not be dead, but I don't want everybody to know that yet."

She approaches the shipyard with pep in her step. The whole experience has left her with a renewed sense of confidence. "Hello!" Meri brightly greets the salesman; Bob, presumably. "We're looking to trade in our old ship and buy a new one. Something quick and solid, preferably armed, with enough space for a crew of six. Our old ship is a cargo vessel in reasonable condition, but it's made some mileage, so we're willing to pay a small fee on top of it." She gives the salesman a winning smile, hoping to disarm him before she drops the fact that it's a Vular ship. "It's a Vhaeraun class, probably an older model... I hope that's not a problem?"

Meriele's eyebrows raise as she looks back at the scout ship, and she makes sure Bob sees it. Turning back to Naivara, the singer gives her a smile and a pat on the shoulder. "I got this." She comes back to the salesman with a regretful expression. "My friend has just informed me that that's an elven vessel. Were you really going to sell one to us for that much after I offered you a drow ship for sale? For shame, Bob. For shame! That's like selling somebody a gun used in a murder and sending them to a police station! You wouldn't do that to fine young people of honorable intentions, would you? Not for eleven thousand credits." She sighs dramatically and adds in a theatrical gesture as she pauses for a moment to let the tension sink in.

"How about nine thousand? The remaining two-thousand might be just enough to bribe Vular officials into turning a blind eye to the origin of our swanky new ship. The cost of our continued survival, if you will. You're a businessman, you understand." The bid shouldn't be too outrageous, but they needed to get some sort of discount if they were going to get that ship. But if Bob proved to be a hardass on the price, there had to be other ways to get that thing.

"Hmm...how about the Independence?" She was never the greatest at naming things, but it seemed to fit, given the nature of their current work. Meanwhile, Meriele was making sure all the supplies she had earlier were all accounted for and stowed away for easy access. Food - non-perishables, mostly, but a few bits of fresh fruit as well; it'd been ages since she had any. Some pocket-sized flashlights, for those on the team that didn't have night-vision in some capacity or another. Spare batteries, a few dozen. And a small music player, which she hooks up to the little data drive that has her friends music on it. A little something to give their new ship a bit of atmosphere.

"What do you think?" she whispers to the others. "Take a light, or gamble on the emergency lighting being enough?" The dark interior gave her no comfort, but the question of visibility versus stealth was a bit of a dilemma here. She could see in the dark, a little bit, but not this dark. Still, she keeps her senses alert. "Looks clear so far.."

She'd rather have the two of them inbetween us, just in case anything snuck up on them from behind in there. Nothing personal...but she was used to running and hiding. It was instinct. She stays a little ways behind Ziv, giving her plenty of space to react should he find something. The darkness of her clothes and hair blends almost seamlessly with the pitch of the interior. Were it not for her pale forehead catching the occasional refraction, she'd be practically invisible.

A survivor would be helpful, but if it was an enemy they'd be in trouble. But more pressing, perhaps, was the dust they were getting coated in. Some sort of spore? Good thing they all had some sort of mouth protection to prevent them from breathing it in, even if hers just was a bit of fabric. She taps Ziv on the shoulder and gestures at the powder. The elf lets out a heavy sigh of relief as Ziv starts getting to work. "I don't think this was the Vular. They're more...clinical about their experiments. There would have been an observation ship, or even just a satellite, in orbit." Again, she had gotten off lucky; the spot where the monster had hit her was bruising, but not actively bleeding.

"Kvardek and me can head back to the command center and see what we can find in the logs; maybe with one other for backup, just in case we missed one of them." She strokes her chin in thought. "Securing some of these medical supplies for ourselves might be an idea worth considering; same with scrounging the armory. I think it's safe to say that this base is pretty much a lost cause until the resistance can commit a full quarantine team to this mess. When we find them - or if we do, I guess - we can tell then all about it, but until then, might as well make the best of a bad situation."

"Alright, let's see..." Having sequestered herself and Kvardek in the command center while the rest scoured the base for other supplies, Meriele started working on the electronics system. It took some effort; the security was rather extensive, as one might expect. Still, after a while of patient typing - aided by what she had learned of resistance security on Telis - she managed to make some headway, and a directory of files opened itself up for perusal. "Gotcha!"

The video logs seem like the most appropriate place to start. "Time to find out where this mess started..." She clicked the most recent one; yesterday's log. If that reveals nothing, she'd go back, one day at a time, until she found footage of the outbreak.

...drat scientists. Meri watches with growing distaste as the events unfold on the screen. Even though they weren't Vular, the singer couldn't help but feel contempt for their experiments. The connecting joint on her mechanical arm aches in agreement. If they'd just been more careful...

The message snaps her out of it. "Um... hello?" is the first thing that comes out of her mouth, before she realizes that these guys are used to a certain protocol. "This is um...Starlet, of the Independence. Doren outpost was overrun by an experiment gone awry. My crew cleared the base of hostiles and we were in the process of finding out what the heck happened." She has to catch herself before she swears; it just doesn't seem appropriate. "Survivors from the original base staff are," she pauses again, a moment of silence for those who passed, "unlikely. Over.'

Meri lowers her hands as the soldiers suddenly start getting chummy with eachother. Well, that...works? She waits for a timely moment, then steps up next to Naivara. "Um...hi. I was the one on the radio." She neglects to give her name, even when the others ask for it. Friends of the others they might be, but Meri's trust has to be earned. "It's a big mess in there. Spores in the air, so if you're gonna be there a while, make sure you get some air masks. Suits, preferably. There might still be a hostile or two, but I think we've cleared out most of them. If you do find one, they don't go down easy, so don't be stingy with the bullets." She adds in a summary of what she saw in the records; how the experiment started, how it got out of hand, etc. "Ziv could probably tell you more on the nature of how it works - I just know it's messy, and kind of scary."

Meriele scowls. "Right. Throw us into the middle of a Vular armada - a command ship, no less - and just let us take it out on our own. I'm not generally the cynic of the group, but this seems like you're just throwing us away into a thinly-veiled suicide, Commander." Crossing her arms, she takes up a defiant position in front of the others. "I'm sure you have plenty of teams at your disposal that could do the same; if not on board, then in your fleet. But I'm guessing you'd rather keep those in reserve when you have some civilians whose lives you can gamble with." The elf sighs. "I hate the Vular as much as anyone - but this is madness, and you know it. We can fight, sure, as much as I hate it. But some of us nearly died, down there; if not from the horde of weird cactus monsters, then from the infections they gave us. Had the infirmary not been stocked, we wouldn't be here right now. So I'm not so keen to try and throw my life away again in an instant, greater good or not. I'm a singer; not a soldier."

Meriele is quiet for a while. "I uh...I guess we're doing this, then," comes the meek acquiescence after the commander elaborates on their odds. She still wasn't entirely comfortable with it - but she had back-up, right? Naivara was tough. Kvardek too. Stoaga couldn't miss. Ziv was clever. And Kacht-Ka was...Kacht-Ka. They could do it. Probably. Still - she was going to dive into the heart of Vular power. Having spent such a long time running away, it wasn't her ideal plan. "Can I be excused?" she asked. "I'd like a moment to get ready."

In the Interim

Meri finds an empty quarter on the alliance ship and sits down on the floor, staring at the wall. "Well...I guess I have to do this one way or another," she says to nobody in particular. It's not like she didn't want to help the alliance. She hated the Vular. Hated them for what they did to her, to her friends, to her planet... but this was something else. She was scared. Real scared. She had just volunteered to go into the lion's den. To fight against those that had kept her under lock and key and subjected her to their crazy experiments. Her thoughts went back to the girls they'd rescued on Teris. She remembered what that had been like, her first taste of freedom. But hers hadn't come with a savior to shelter her and give her peace. It had been confusing, and terrifying, and exhausting. All she had been able to do was run. Run, and leave her friends behind.

And now she was running into the fight. Because she had to. She'd maybe thought that if she ever did find a group to link up with it, she could've been more of a moral support; using her face, her reputation and her words to get the people going. To keep the fighters' courage high. But she was on the frontlines, now. She was going to have to put her life on the line again. And it terrified her. She wasn't ashamed to admit that she was a coward. Well, to herself, at least. But it didn't abate her fear. Because if she failed, they were going to take her back, and strap her down, and the whole nightmare of lights and blades and drugs would start again. And there was no way the Alliance would find her ever again.

She only realizes she's crying when the tears fall on her hands; she surrenders to it with heavy sobs and ugly wails.

On the ship

Meriele slowly clenches and unclenches her mechanical fist. They'd had to make some adjustments to the vac suit to allow for the big honking engine in her shoulder, and the suit as a whole felt uncomfortable. But at the very least her face was covered. Take your blessings where you can, Meri. "Bridge is that way," comes her voice over the comm in a guarded neutral tone, "who's on first?" Please don't let it be me.

Wahad

She's glad the full helmet of her swanky new vac suit covers her face. Expressions of terror don't tend to strike fear in the hearts of enemies, as a general rule. But then Kvardek's split-second tactical analysis comes in, and one of the guards gets dinged with one of Stoaga's bullets. The sniper was right. These weren't the terrifying reminders of her past that were going to take her back to the experiment table like she was fearing.

They were cannon fodder.

Starlet steps forward, mechanical hand briefly on Naivara's shoulder. "Give me a second. If this doesn't work, pummel that bitch into oblivion." The message over the comms is quick and to the point, but as she switches to broadcast, the purple glow on her weapon's engine changes to a gunmetal grey. "Commander Valoryn Elix. For the Vular Empire's multiple violations of the Degelan Interplanetary Convention of Humanoid Rights, you are to be judged at the Galactic Court. We are taking command of your ship. Order your troops to stand down and surrender. Resistance will be met with lethal force."

Somehow, her voice takes on a weird echoing quality, as if a mob is speaking with her. Most of the people present wouldn't feel anything other than perhaps some slight tingle in the ears. But to the commander, the target of the new upgrade to her armature, her words wouldn't just sound like a meaningless threat. The scientists back on the Plezents had taken to her Vular prosthetic with great glee. They hadn't had time to add a lot, but they were eager to have her be a guinea pig for some of their new experimental weapons, like the quantum harmonic...something or other. Okay, so she doesn't remember what they called it, but she does remember it's supposed to make people do what she wants them to, without realizing it. Or so they said. Hopefully it works.

Meriele

Meriele's face goes pale. She knew. All that careful consideration in her fleeing, never staying in one place too long...and the commander knew who she was all the same. It had all been for nothing.

Flashes of scalpels and bright lights and masked doctors assault her vision.

She screams.

A wild lash at the Fateclaimer causes the drow to stumble back and swipe at her - though not before Kacht-Ka returns the favor with his own blades. The singer practically jumps down the ladder, away from Valoryn, away from everything.

Her arm's engine putters to a slow hum. In the distance, Ziv gets a tingle in his spine, and a glow around his body, and things don't seem to hurt as much for a hot minute... it seems the machine has some sort of auto-pilot to help take care of the wielder's companions even without a direct command.

Standard; Staggering Note vs Fateclaimer at 1d20+12=26. Hit for 4 thunder damage, pushing Fateclaimer to D9. Fateclaimer gets an OA against me (though I have 25 AC thanks to Second Wind). Kacht-Ka gets an MBA against Fateclaimer for 1d20+15=22 (forgot to claim CA from Faerie Fire in the roll), hitting for 1d10+10=14 damage.
Move; Down the ladder to F7.
Minor; Use Revitalizing Incantation on Ziv, who can spend a surge to heal and get his surge value in THP.

Meriele

Meriele scampers back up to the catwalk while the others attempt to restrain Valoryn. And even more Vular were coming in to take them! This was going to end only one way. She flings a bolt of energy at the oncoming cavalry; her attack sends the new honorguard flying, but her half-hearted attempt doesn't allow Kacht-Ka to take advantage.

Move; E10
Standard; Staggering Note vs HonorGuard E at 1d20+10=20. Hit for 4 thunder damage, Kacht-Ka gets a free MBA at 1d20+13=16, missing. Honorguard E gets pushed to M11.

There is no escape.

Meriele

"No." Meri responds to Valoryn. "This is your grave, Elix." Stepping away from the honor guard and trusting Stoaga to take care of him, the singer's wavering voice steadies as she opens the visor on her helmet. Kvardek takes advantage of the momentary distraction by sidestepping his own opponent. "You will go down with this ship." Her face carries an expression of solemn clarity, even through the streaks of tears and her reddened eyes. "You will never terrorize this galaxy ever again." Her arm glows a bright blue, as she stares down the holographic image of the drow commander in her spider form. "You will fall, and it will be at OUR HANDS!" As she yells out, a visible bolt of energy discharges from her weapon and hits Valoryn square in the chest. It explodes, surrounding her body with what seems like a harness of static electricity, sparking out from her - it won't harm her any further, but it will help reinvigorate Meri's allies every time they strike.

On Valoryn's Turn:
Free: Slide Kvardek to K12 after Valoryn's miss with Virtue of Cunning.

My Turn:
Move; Shift to F9.
Standard; Stirring Shout vs Valoryn at 1d20+10=22. Hit for 2d6+6-3=10 psychic damage. Until the end of the encounter, whenever an ally hits Valoryn, they regain 4 hitpoints.

As Kvardek steps into the fray, Meri charges in with a bitter look on her face, lashing out at Valoryn's form. The drow commander is too quick for her, however, and even the follow-up blow goes wide.

My Turn:
Move; Move to J9.
Standard: Cunning Ferocity vs Valoryn at 1d20+13=14. Invoke Couters of Second Chances for a reroll at 1d20+13=14 and miss again.

There is no escape.

Meriele

Pain screams through her body. Everything goes red and black before her eyes. This is it. This is where she'd die. She lurches back, but her senses give way before she hits the ground.

Her unconscious mind roams the vastness of space. Stars rise and fall, planets are birthed and destroyed, galaxies spiral into infinity. And through it all, a voice, calling to her, distant and ethereal, with a soft musical lilt that appeals to the artist within her. "My power can be yours," the voice calls, soothing and protective, "All you need to do is take it." Meri, her mechanical arm seeming to blend seamlessly with the tapestry of dark and light around her, reaches out and pulls herself in the direction of that voice, falling, falling...

She wakes up with a gasping start, Ziv and Naivara standing over her as the singer breathes heavily. "I'm...alive?" Her jacket is soaked with blood, and the hurt is still there - but she stands up, nonetheless, quiet and wide-eyed at the sight before her. The others talk, but she pays them no heed, her stare zeroing in on the unconscious Valoryn. One step makes her agony flare up, but her building rage dulls it to a distant throb. Another step brings her to the commander's limp body, and she's screaming before she realizes it. All civility falls away as her weaponized limb drives into Valoryn's face. The drow's helmet cracks under the force, and so does her nose, before Starlet's pulled away. "No! She killed me, she killed them, all of them, she's gotta pay, she dies!" She thrashes against the hold on her, but all strength has left her body, and she gives up before long, falling to her knees and suppressing her sobs.

When the panic subsides, however, after a good long cry, another thought came to her. They'd won. By the skin of their teeth, yes, but they'd won.

Maybe... maybe there was a chance to turn this whole thing around.

"I..." He was right. There were still things to do - they weren't out of the fire yet. "...yeah. Yeah, I'll see what I can do." She takes a deep breath to center herself, but turns her gaze away from the bloodied and broken commander; though whether out of spite or fear of losing control again, her expression doesn't say. Walking with Kvardek to the comms, she helps him reroute the systems, though her thoughts are not fully into it, and most of her actions or on reflex if nothing else. But it's enough to get them a ways into the system, and hopefully enough to establish contact.

While Kvardek goes about his business scanning the ship for hostiles, Meri picks up the communicator. "This is Starlet, hailing the Plezents, please respond, over." When she has contact, she resumes her message, but her voice is monotonous and dull. "Mission was a success, commander. We have control of the bridge, and are currently in the process of securing the command ship and some prisoners." She looks back one last time as the group starts walking away with Valoryn and the other honor guard in tow. "No casualties on our end, but a few wounded. Jumping to you seems an available option once ship is secured. Please advise, over."

Also burning three surges to heal to full. 2 left.

"Uhhh..." Meri echoes dully over the communicator, "You guys realize we're on your side, right? Did Commander Ersan not inform you of the strike team that was going to take the ship, or perhaps did she lack the presence of mind to say that the mission was successful, and we were jumping to you? There are no Vular hostiles aboard this ship. I repeat, no Vular hostiles. Ship is clear. You are free to come in, but for the love of the galaxy, if you shoot us, I'm gonna be so pissed. I am not gonna die after surviving the second most terrifying experience of my life just because some overzealous jarhead didn't take the time to use his loving eyes before he pulled the trigger!" By the time her sentence finishes, the singer realizes her voice went up a few pitches, and quite a few decibels.

She looks at Kvardek, then back at the bodies littering the bridge. "Just our luck, huh?" she groans, before slumping down to the ground with a heavy sigh, and leaning back against the console, waiting for the alliance soldiers to storm in. She puts her hands on her head, though. Just in case.
