Yeah, I think this is the part that excites me the most. MST3k is funny when you only understand half the jokes, so hopefully it's even better when you understand a larger portion of the jokes.

There are nearly 200 episodes, a feature length film, and multiple spin-offs. That's a lot even for a dedicated fan.

They tend to do movies that don't have a lot of entertainment value on their own. Things you can watch, even ironically, without them don't tend to be in their wheelhouse. There are better or worse films they've done, but that seems to be the general pattern.

In Italian filmmaking of that era, sound was almost never recorded on set. And in some cases, actors just read their lines in whatever language they speak, and everything is dubbed in later. Helps with international markets and such.

Yeah, even really good Italian films from the era like the Dollars Trilogy do this. It's actually one of the reasons they're so sparse on dialogue.

The thing that particularly aggravates me on my Facebook are people who see it as some kind of cynical, Hollywood-ized nostalgia cash-in, sell-out, because it really just seems clear that Joel was upset that his jokey puppet show died and found a bunch of up-and-coming comedians who grew up with and loved it to death. Whatever flaws it might have in the tough balancing act between winking too much and winking too little, staying too faithful and reinventing the wheel, bringing in new, exciting talent and maintaining the cow town feel, everyone associated with it tried really hard, whether they were making cardboard cut-outs, playing a cover of the Canada song, or just mailing postcards to backers. At least that terribly wrong reviewer admitted it was a labor of love.

I honestly can't think of anything I've seen lately that feels more earnest. Everyone is throwing their heart and soul into this, and you can just feel it. They just want to make you laugh, it's really sweet. :shobon:

It's really interesting how they mostly avoid the obvious dirty jokes. I used to think it was just a product of the time that they couldn't get too obscene on cable, but now I believe it's just their style of humor. It's probably for the better, a lesser movie riffing group would probably lean too heavily on the easy dirty comments.

Joel has talked about how he wants to maintain a "light PG-13" because of how much of the fanbase back in the day was kids and families. I think it's the right choice: raunchy enough that the kids get to feel like it's a treat to watch and mild enough that the average parent will be comfortable with letting kids see it.

If my faves from the Mike era are the sci-fi and "action" episodes with standout sidekicks/villains (Space Mutiny, Time Chasers, Operation Double 007, Final Sacrifice, etc), which one from the new set will most likely hit similar beats?

I'll do them in order eventually, but tonight i just need something that hits the spot.
