A bit late for shorts chat, but I always liked A Day at the Fair:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aEY9uRknRRc

It loses steam a bit towards the end, but the first half is excellent with some gloriously dark riffs.

Aw man, no MST3K on Netflix in my stupid backwoods country. :finland: Season 11 apparently isn't coming either, finally got around to checking that (not that I really expected it to be available in the first place, but I was holding on to that tiny sliver of hope). edit: Oh, I see the countries were listed in the OP all along :downs:

Well, no worries there, I'll just use a VPN. Oh wait, I can't because Netflix is now blocking those.

To be fair, I really wouldn't want to be the guy who has to translate episodes of MST3K into Finnish (or any other language for that matter) because that would just be an absolute nightmare (and that's before you take into account the fact you'd need to have one set of subtitles for the movie and another for the riffs). Well, unless I got paid really well, but audiovisual translators in this country usually don't.

Is this not available worldwide? I'm not a fan but I wanted to watch Reptilicus since it's a Danish movie, but then it's not available in Denmark?? I don't think I've ever seen Netflix region lock their original shows.
Unfortunately it's only available in the US, Canada, UK, Australia and New Zealand right now. I'm not expecting us in the Nordic countries to be able to watch this anytime soon. :smith:

Even Rifftrax couldn't save the second Bay Transformers when I tried to watch it, that was an utterly miserable slog to sit through.

Oh yeah, here's a dumb little thing I've been wondering lately -- when you think about the MST3K theme song, which version is the one that usually pops into your head? For me it tends to be the one from seasons 8-9, because when I was first getting into MST3K (around the time Youtube became a thing) I tended to watch a lot more of the Sci-Fi stuff than the older episodes. I guess I figured that since the Sci-Fi episodes were more recent, that'd mean I might be able to get more of the jokes since the references wouldn't be quite as dated.

Yeah, the lyrics stayed the same throughout Joel's run (not counting KTMA, of course) and this "classic" version of the theme has stuck with me as well. Not quite to the extent the S8-S9 version has, though, so for me "In the not too distant future" is usually followed by "somewhere in time and space."

I found a way to watch :canada: Netflix on my account, so now I can finally see the new episodes without having to resort to... uh, circulating the tapes. I'm about 15 minutes into Avalanche, and in my opinion the titular avalanche can't hit these people soon enough.

Okay, what is the issue with Jim Mallon? I never was involved in the show in hits hayday, so I don't know all the behind the scenes strife that went on.
Here's what Joel and Mallon had to say about it a few years ago (in Wired magazine's "Oral History of MST3K" article, which is a great read):

quote:

Mallon: I think Joel operated under the idea that this was his show, and everyone was working for him. And everyone else was into this sort of cooperative mode—that it’s all of us working together. So it would be somewhat analogous to John Cleese saying, “Oh, by the way, this is my show, and you guys work for me.” The rest of the Pythons would have probably taken exception with that.

Hodgson: I was fighting with Jim Mallon. We had decided, oh, let’s be like Star Trek: The Next Generation and do a movie. Instead of 22 movies a year, we’ll do one really good one and be rich and famous. And that’s when Jim said, “OK, well, I’m the producer and I’m the director.” And I just felt like that didn’t acknowledge my position. I’m like, I created this. Where’s my acknowledgment? I felt that was kind of a power grab on his part. We were an ensemble. We did everything as a group. So that’s when I kind of said, “If you direct this, I’m leaving.” And it just all fell apart after that.

Mallon: Basically, we got to this conclusion that whatever Joel thought the show was at the beginning, it now didn’t function that way. And so Joel had a choice of what he wanted to do about it. And ultimately he chose to leave the show.

Hodgson: I wasn’t the kind of person who would have done a bad sitcom, and I also wasn’t the kind of person who would have done a crap version of the movie. I knew it was wrong. And I decided to walk away.

I completely forgot about the MST3K channel on Pluto TV until someone mentioned it a couple of pages back. Aside from the repetitive commercials where someone really wants to sell me a Dodge Ram for only $189.95/mo, this is pretty great. The #1 feel-good movie of 1956 (The Violent Years, written by master screenwriter Edward D. Wood Jr.) just ended, and now they're showing Girl in Gold Boots.

Thankfully it's not Girl in Lovers' Lane (I always get those two mixed up), sitting through that one right after The Violent Years might've been a bit too much of a downer.

I just watched Pod People in its entirety for the first time in god knows how many years. Honestly, aside from the legendary "Idiot Control Now" and "Trumpy, you can do stupid things" bits, that movie is a hideously boring slog to sit through. The riffing is solid and the host segments are great, but the film is such a tedious mess I kinda stop paying attention after a while.

Speaking of films prominently featuring people running around outdoors -- the numerous scenes of Ro-Man wandering up and down hills in Robot Monster are already funny as hell on their own because it's a guy in a gorilla suit and a diving helmet walking around in a long shot, but then you add Servo singing in this dopey voice during those scenes and I just lose it every single time. Robot Monster's easily my favorite episode from season 1.

Whoever did the Netflix subtitles for the Yongary episode needs to be shot into space immediately because they misspelled Iron Maiden's Piece of Mind as "Peace of Mind". This is a severe crime against horrible puns and must be dealt with accordingly!

I don't like the animated intro in general, it looks really cheap. Not in a charming way like MST3K, but in a "wow, they seriously couldn't get a better animator for this poo poo?" sense. Then you add Jonathan Coulton at his most grating, and the results speak for themselves. :gonk:

What the gently caress even is a Sampo in the first place? Best I can tell is it's some sort of magical snack machine/horn of plenty that only this one bearded guy can build and he can only build it once.
Elias Lönnrot, the guy who compiled Kalevala, interpreted it as a magical mill that can create flour, salt, and gold coins out of nothing.

That's definitely what I think of when someone mentions the Sampo and it is often depicted that way in art, but like its Wikipedia article mentions, some folks interpret it as a world pillar or world tree or something based on various historical relics found in the area, such as a Byzantine coin die.

This... probably wasn't very good for the longevity of the mechanism, come to think of it.
