Did Shout!Factory begin reprinting MST3K volumes starting from Vol.I? Sorry if I'm late to the discussion, I've just noticed new titles on Amazon. Is the content any different from the original release?

I mean it's not like it's Season 1 episode 1 through 4, these are more or less random episodes from random seasons, packaged, as you said, in chronological order.

People who went to the screening, if this doesn't sound strange to you, what existing MST3K episode(s) would you recommend to watch to better prepare for the new stuff?

As in, I know my friend wants to watch the original Twin Peaks again before the new season is out, this sort of thing.

e: speaking of NDA, would you consider breaking it if the person you're talking to flashes an official MST3K Revival League card at you? And if not, why not?

There's a new Kickstarter update out with info about when different people will get access to the episodes. If you backed at the $25 level or higher you will get streaming access to the first episode (on VHX) on April 8th (for 24 hours) and there will be an official simulwatch with Joel and the rest of the cast followed by a Q&A.

On the 11th backers who pledged at a level that includes digital downloads ($85+) will get streaming access to the whole season which will be upgraded to download access on the 13th (the day before it goes live on Netflix).

Joel is also strongly encouraging people to watch it on Netflix (both the classic and new eps) since how many people watch (and how much they watch) is one of the key metrics Netflix uses when deciding to renew a show.

What a welcome update. I am definitely going to order Netflix streaming, if only for a month. Is there any other Netflix Originals I should check out? I'm already planning to see Jessica Jones and Sense8

Yeah, they produced a ton of content, and it was a silly question to ask anyway. I was sort of keeping track of what I wanted to see, but then the list became too long. Fun fact: Alexander Rou, a Soviet film director who worked on Jack Frost, was half Irish, which explains his unusual family name, originally spelled as Rowe.

Bobbin Threadbare posted:

Speaking of which, do you think the new season will be edited to fit a certain length, or will they take full advantage of the online distribution and make the episode length irregular?

Quoted from A Good Interview in the post above:

quote:

Given that the new series is on Netflix, and has no commercials or time constraints, I didn’t expect that it would still stick to being 90 minutes long, with three host segments in the middle, and even bumpers for commercial breaks. Why do that?

Hodgson:
I love those little remnants that are in TV shows, like, they’re going to a commercial break. If you watch The Walking Dead... there are moments where you know it’s supposed to go to a commercial. You can feel it. And it doesn’t. But it’s a little reminder that, “Oh, they were going to go to commercial there.” I really love that. And I think it’s good for the viewer. It’s a little bit of a palette cleanser.

And it was also kind of a remnant from the original show that I was trying to send a little love tap to people who were longtime fans and watched the shows on VHS. And in the narrative of the show, Inga’s kind of maniacal and wants to blow up the brand, and so she’s using that to kind of reinforce that you’re watching this slick TV show, and they have a house band... they’re promoting it back to you as you’re watching it. You know?
So, even though Joel did not confirm it directly, I guess they're going for a certain format rather than irregular length.

Ok, so I have an example of the problems I have with the riffing. In Avalanche (about 40 minutes in) a helicopter makes a landing. They sing the MASH theme since the shot is reminiscent of that. While someone is still doing the theme song, they start ANOTHER joke and have someone 'announce' the movie, similar to what Radar would do in MASH. Literally a nano-second later, they make ANOTHER joke about parking in a handicapped spot.

You've got 3 funny jokes for the same thing all in the span of like 20 seconds. Pick a joke and let it land. They're funny riffs but it's just too crammed in there. It happens a lot. They'll rattle off several jokes for one thing.

This is because you know what MASH theme sounds like, and who Radar is. The unwashed masses (me included, as I haven't seen MASH) would only get the baseline parking joke.

Man, that movie...

That whole movie seemed to me like some movie producer had a terrible idea that sounded good when he wrote it down, probably because he'd passed out in a drunken stupor and was still drunk when he woke up from a bad dream, at which point he grabbed a pencil and paper and wrote down "lawyer saves Christmas by using legal bureaucracy." (Hey, this producer may think of bad ideas for movies, but he can spell very well when drunk.)

Then, on a bet he couldn't afford to lose, he had to make that movie. And the film we saw was the result. The whole time I watched it, I couldn't stop thinking, "Why is this movie? Why is it?"

I looked it up on wikipedia, and apparently The Christmas That Almost Wasn't is a lovechild of Sam Whipple (original book and movie adaptation) and Phineas Prune (directing). When both writer and director also co-star in the movie they're making, yeah, it's a hallmark of an MST3K movie.
