Joining the military is the gayest thing you can do so I don't understand why politicians in the 90s freaked out over it.

Teflon Don posted:Nobody cared. Yeah, my brother said his squadron had a few gay maintainers and ord guys back in late 90s and no one gave a poo poo because they were actually good at their jobs. And also, gay guys don't marry strippers and bar chicks, so there's way less FRG drama which is always cool

Circa 2007. We had a guy in our berthing that went by Gayjay. He was super gay. No one cared.

Also, gay wingmen were the loving best. When I'd go to San Diego or LA on the weekend, my buddy who was a gay SP would wingman for me and he could screen fatties, drunk friends and uggos like nobody's business. Also how I learned gay bars have way better bartenders. Dudes can make an Old Fashioned like you would not believe

We got our DADT repeal brief right after weigh-ins, so everyone was in their itty bitty green shorts and probably feeling more vulnerable than usual. A few guys were livid. Homosexual anal rape was their biggest concern. They were seriously distraught and believed a "tummy tucker" (?? their term) was going to creep into their barracks room while they slept and... suck their dick? Some saw this as a slippery slope: If gays are okay today.. Are animal fuckers and pedophiles going to be okay tomorrow? Others, while visibly uncomfortable, were content to declare that it was a violation of their religious beliefs. To be fair, half the room didn't give a poo poo. A few laughed and called the others out for being absurd. But this just made them even angrier. The angriest guy in the room also happened to be the fastest-promoted among us. The Marine Corps isn't inherently homophobic, it just values retard strength above all other attributes. And so The Marine Corps is inherently retarded. And Homophobia is retarded. You don't need to be able to crank out 20 pull-ups to fend off a faggoty cum burglar. Victor Vermis Bravo Range Victor Vermis fucked around with this message at 02:22 on Jul 25, 2016 |

Enlisted back in 04 and we had an openly bi dude when we deployed. The worst thing that happened was he had a porno mag called "black inches" that he left in the back of one of the humvees he was in.

Add these to your list, thanks Are you mad they still haven't come out with gay-equivalent awards yet Which bathroom do you use Was it hard to piss in a portashitter when all the dick drawings gave you raging erections Were you known as a ringer in gay chicken tournaments Was it weird loving dudes on deployment and giving no reply when the other guy's like "no homo" Cut or uncut

So just in case you were wondering why that comic was made when the real answer to how DADT impacted the force wasTeflon Don posted:Nobody cared. the answer is, because DoD is retarded and insists on providing "training" for every little thing under the sun that is clunky and poorly executed. Also because it gives them something to point to whenever Congress asks them why aren't they doing more about "x" (the latest example of this would be all of DoD's response to sexual assault)

Gay dude in my last unit. Infantry unit. Openly gay, no one cares, not even command because they could have kicked him out before DADT was repealed but didn't. There's my anecdote welp cya later.

same here, couple gay dudes and ladies in my unit, they were in various states of outness and no one cared. if you were someone that cared about why you don't like gay people enough to talk about it in public then most people would probably hate you in the military. during DADT (before I was in the unit) two girls had parked an m997 in a field somewhere and started going to town on each other until they were caught by the BC they got booted.

MurderBot posted:"I can't train drill sergeant, I keep thinking of massive dicks smacking my face while you're PT'ing us!!" There was a guy in my basic who told the drill sgt he was gay to get out. Really awkward "battle buddy me while I talk to the DS" moment. Best part was he was engaged and his girl was 5 months pregnant. Ended up staying past when we graduated because getting kicked out apparently takes forever in basic.

All the dudes claiming to be gay to get out just saw the writing on the wall and I'm kind of jealous I didn't start claiming I liked the dick in order to avoid the massive (metaphorical) dicks the army threw at me daily. For DADT relevance I joined a year before it was repealed and literally nobody cared, even in the infantry.

I was harassed endlessly in A-school to the point that I nearly had to be held back and put in the next class when my roommate, who did everything he could avoid even being in the room with me much less sleep in the same room as me, told everyone that I was gay. I am not gay and at the time I was dating a girl in the class behind mine. Later on he sort of apologized when he saw me at a party with her. As far as leadership/command was concerned, they didn't care that anyone would be gay or harassed, only that if I left the class it would have been too small to continue on and that would have caused a stink to explain why 4 people with above 95% averages get held back at the same time. After I got my major qualification, people join and then immediately get out so they can go civilian where the money is, I stood up in the briefing room and told everyone that I was in fact a super peter-puffer and I should be discharged asap. My crew leader told me that they require proof to kick you out so I sat back down. I actually worked with a knew a few gay people, and yeah nobody really cares unless you are some slack-jawed hick. The day DADT was repealed we had just gotten back from deployment and my friend decided to take some of that sweet tax free money and buy his whole family tickets to something or other, anyways he calls home and gets the answering machine and simply says he had a 'big surprise' to tell them later and he'd call back. Given the timing I told him to call and leave another machine so his family didn't get confused.

Thanks for all of the responses everyone! It's always interesting to get some background directly, as opposed to going on various news articles etc. What I'm getting from this is that there were a variety of different experiences under DADT - for some people it was loving awful and for some people it didn't make any kind of difference. So variable. I guess it depends on your chief/who you're working with/where you are? iyaayas01 posted:So just in case you were wondering why that comic was made when the real answer to how DADT impacted the force was Makes sense. The comic does seem incredibly disconnected to everything I've read, and also disconnected to how people relate to each other as human beings who exist in the world. It seems like it was made by aliens. I did see an anecdote where somebody said that his CO said that she'd only dismiss someone for being gay if they gave her two polaroids of them giving a BJ and their face was visible in both of them - but then there's also poo poo like someone getting dismissed for having some vaguely gay AOL account so I dunno.

Things were much better at Holloman, my first sergeant actually talked to me about it like I was a human being and helped get me a DOS rollback to separate a year early since I was heading down a bad path in part because of my experience at Kadena. I'm glad to hear that for most people it was a non-issue but I guarantee it wasn't like that for everyone. I'm glad the policy is gone. The worst part was not being able to stand up for myself or talk to anyone about it aside from my parents via Skype. It might not have been a huge people for many but it certainly wasn't a nonissue either.
