I already love srb2, but have many people in this thread talked about Sonic GT? I missed it if there was a discussion about it, but I've been eyeing to play it for a while. I always seem to forget about it afterwards though, and it'd help me dive in if I heard there were people who actually liked it.

I tried SRB2, I pushed on for a few levels but it was really awkward and unfun to control. I get that it was probably cool in its own way all those years ago, but I really don't think it has aged well.

The first playthrough is rough because of frankly awful bosses and cutscenes, but it has been the most fun I've had in a long time replaying levels in a 3d sonic game. All the characters are sick and while there are just 4 stages they have 5 missions each and are consistently great.

Just give us Sonic rolled up without the ball, damnit. Switch out the sound effects like jump for Sonic sound effects. The past Sonic Monkey Ball things already had switching bananas for rings, right?

that would require Sonic to be very awkwardly large since the hitbox still needs to be Monkeyball-sized

The monkeys in those balls are smaller than a bunch of bananas, if anything sonic would have to be scaled down to be the size of a monkey ball

alright having now played generations and every* game released before it, i feel comfortable picking my dream generations level list had sonic team consulted me. assuming the source games remain the same,

sonic 1: eh it could only ever be green hill, i don't really like the other levels that much anyway
sonic 2: mystic cave (but chemical plant is super good)
3 & knuckles: hydrocity....or flying battery, it's so hard to choose!
adventure: twinkle park
adventure 2: final rush (but city escape is perfect)
heroes: mystic mansion (this is the first game where i'm straight up disappointed by the selection, heroes has some great level themes)
06: white acropolis
unleashed: jungle joyride!!
colors: sweet mountain (this one's tricky because it's gotta serve as the final level, and while i wish literally any level besides planet wisp had been picked it does make a good foil for green hill)

and if i'm being extremely indulgent,

cd: stardust speedway (the metal sonic fight is fantastic but c'mon give it a full level)
3d blast: rusty ruin
advance 2: music plant
shadow the hedgehog: mad matrix
rush adventure: haunted ship
secret rings: night palace

*close enough

Great choices. Have you tried the Mystic Cave mod for Generations? It's just act 1 for Classic Sonic but it's really well done.

For Sonic 1 I'd like to try Scrap Brain Zone since it has the most variety and it has this Blade Runner inspired background and music. You could even have a lower path going through the Labyrinth Zone segment. It definitely wouldn't work as a first level though.

Spring Yard Zone would be great, but it would be even better if it mixed in elements of Sparkling Zone from the beta (maybe not the flashing lights) as well as the concept art. I really miss the art design of Naoto Oshima on the early Sonic games and Nights, you can really see in Sonic CD what the series could have looked like.

Also the level selection is kinda lame, just the first level from the same batch of games except for the aforementioned Casino Night Zone.

It’s not great to be honest (a lot of the early classic levels are basically just carbon copies of their Genesis counterparts, they gave Classic Sonic a homing attack for some reason, and a lot of the modern stages seem to rely on “boost or die” setups).

Also the SA2 representative is Radical Highway for some reason despite that being a Shadow stage and strangely enough they only use ONE handheld Sonic stage (Water Palace from Rush).

Though I still like it better than Lost World 3DS which has some bullshit stages that go on way too long and possibly the worst Special Stage to ever grace the franchise

Yeah, the first 3 classic levels are just 1:1 copies of their Genesis counterparts which is neat but kinda shows a lack of imagination, and the rest of the stages are...really bland. Like, lots of running down a straight path with nothing on it but a few rings bland. The music is really good, but you can listen to the ost on youtube.

Hell, they almost just picked the first stage from each game represented

Classic era:
Green Hill
Casino Night (can't do emerald hill since we have green hill, chemical plant is in console generations so...)
Mushroom Hill (first stage of s&k)

Adventure era:
Emerald Coast
Radical Highway (shadow's first stage, since city escape is in the console version)

Modern era:
Water Palace (Blaze's first stage in Rush)
Tropical Resort

Aaand that's it, yes there are 2 less stages and only one portable game represented

Larryb
Oct 5, 2010

Blaze’s first Rush stage was Night Carnival (though I believe Water Palace was the second zone for both characters)

Come to think of it, I seem to recall modern Water Palace also just being a 1:1 copy of the Rush stage.

Sonic 1: It kind of has to be Green Hill. I think Green Hill is a little over-represented in Sonic games but for something like Generations, it's got to be the one. It represents the beginning of Sonic as a whole. That being said, Star Light Zone and Scrap Brain Zone are also really cool.
Sonic 2: Given another choice, I kind of want to go with Casinopolis or Mystic Cave Zone. They're cool! Casinopolis is a very memorable stage and Mystic Cave Zone has cool music and aesthetics
Sonic 3&K: Flying Battery for sure. Would also be interested Lava Reef Zone or Death Egg Zone. Or Launch Base!

Sonic Adventure: As a kid, Speed Highway was defnitely my favorite. Alternatively, I think the Egg Carrier stages are really cool. Especially Hot Shelter.
Sonic Adventure 2: Pumpkin Hill would be really funny. I guess you could go with the Shadow Stage set there. Alternatively, the ARK.
Sonic Heroes: Mystic Mansion would be super cool especially if it did all the weird stuff.

Sonic 06: If we want to go with the funniest, probably Radical Train or the pyramid level (I forgot the name). White Acropolis and the sci-fi lab (once again, cannot remember the name) are also fun picks.
Sonic Unleashed: I've never played this game. Maybe Dragon Road?
Sonic Colors: Starlight Carnival, undoubtedly.

Non-represented games:
Sonic CD: Metallic Madness
Sonic Mania: All the original levels are bangers, but probably the best pick would be Studiopolis.
Sonic Forces: Not a lot of options here. Probably Imperial tower because the theme for it whips rear end.
Shadow the Hedgehog: One of the cyberspace levels.
Sonic Advance: That rusty factory one where you get to ride hooks
Sonic Advance 3: Chaos Angel, definitely. Want to hear a Generations version of that theme.

Played Sonic Robo Blast 2 and Sonic GT. They were ok. Sonic GT had really good production. Oddly the music is super weak. Love the thing 3D fangames do where you build momentum by rolling down slopes.
Controls in Robo Blast are fun, but the levels are kind of meh.

Has anyone tried the "misfits pack" level mod for Sonic Mania? It's Hill Top, Aquatic Ruin, Labyrinth, and Wacky Workbench. Not my first choices.
