I get what he means, although Unleashed also represented a major change halfway between Adventure and now. In any case, it sounds like we're definitely getting something different to both the boost era and Adventure era, and something more open world definitely fits with that, unless he means that Sonic is going turn based.

I like how they're clearly designed with multiple characters in mind, like how Sonic solo is a harder and different route than flying over stuff with Tails. Also a fan of the shields and their placement / uses. The purple water that you float in was a good gimmick too. Of course, as a game on the Doom engine, the whole package is incredible.

I think Sonic team should hope they actually publish a finished good game this time before they can assume that Sonic 2022 is some sort of blueprint for anything. These pictures have since been removed from the artist's website as well which makes me think the art is legit and just got revealed too early. Other than Sonic and possibly Eggman I’m pretty sure the character designs are all alternate dimension versions (namely multi-tailed Tails and Cavewoman Amy).

The Sonic Prime leak is a distraction from the real news: A Japanese site is reporting that Kazuyuki Hoshino said they’re planning to make Sonic a V-Tuber for delivering news and stuff in 2022. He also said that after having a Hollywood movie their next dream is making a theme park. Good luck, SEGA. I don’t know how reputable this site is but there’s a 30th anniversary column in the next Famitsu that’s going to feature Iizuka and Hoshino so it might be a leak from that.
