I have no plans on buying Sonic Forces because jesus christ, but I'm watching the Grumps play through the game and I can totally see the appeal to the game if you're a kid. You team up with YOUR BEST FRIEND SONIC and you get to dress up in all sorts of poo poo, and you get to make your own OC who, again, is best pals forever with Sonic. And there's literally a loving Game of Thrones style battle scene where Eggman's forces and Sonic's forces run at each other in one big army clash and it's completely ridiculous. And the villain is the most cornball edgelord this side of Reaper from Overwatch. If I wasn't an adult and cynical about games and Sonic in general I'd think Sonic Forces was the coolest poo poo ever. I can totally see the appeal to it.

I'm honestly hoping for a Forces 2 where they up the game length and just expand on everything. The whole war idea would work well if there was some depth to it and it wasn't just a story device that comes and goes in the blink of an eye. Forces is fine if you think of it as a portable game, and is probably best experienced on the go with the Switch. But I do want to see a proper, full length game that carries over some of its better ideas. Like, I'm playing through Unleashed again and it does a good job of adding just enough busywork and little points of interest and just generally making you feel like you're travelling around getting things done and soaking in the details of a living world without it also feeling like it's trying to pad the gap between levels. That's the kind of thing Forces needed.

Me, I'd really rather they'd have made Generations 2 as per their original plan. I'm watching the GG playthrough too, and it was kind of painful to see stuff like assets from loving Casino Night Zone tossed into an unrelated "new" zone and knowing that we'll never see CNZ in a new Generations game. Also that we'll never get another Generations.

The was never any plan for Generations 2. Some form of Forces was always the plan, though probably not the one we ended up getting.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure a lot of people just assumed it was going to be Generations 2 because Classic Sonic was there. I don't think there was ever any official word on that one way or the other.

I love Tsuko G. but I don't think he's got the right singing style for something rougher like Sonic rock songs. It's too....pretty. What I'm really saying is, he needs to do Light of Hope, cause that'd be amazing

I really like the music in Forces, but I mean, it's a Sonic game, so yeah. I especially like the Avatar stages, which seem to be a point of contention because it's like the unholy lovechild of dubstep and Sonic R. Meh, I dig it. I'm a cynical adult so I can see where they cut corners all over the game but if I was 12 years old, I'd be going nuts over Sonic Forces. I think the little kid inside me is in love with the idea of Sonic Forces. Then adult me is like "yo if Sega wasn't cheap and lazy it could be a game that both kid and adult me would love" and that little balloon gets popped

I've been giving Unleashed another playthrough (on PS3, christ. After a few years of solid 60fps games, the frame drops might as well be from their own circle of hell), and boy, there is a solidly playable game under there, werehog and all, but after the subtle improvements in subsequent games, it really stands out as their first crack at the formula. Sonic just doesn't control well when you're trying to push him around with the stick, and Skyscraper Scamper Act 2 in particular is like some hell on Earth, where it's just a series of straight lines, but the platforms are so thin, and Sonic so twitchy and fast, that an entire level of running forward cost me forty lives and two game overs. Rather than porting Unleashed into Generations, I'd love to see someone mod Unleashed. For Sonic, fix his movement to reflect later improvements, drop his speed a little bit and get rid of the lives. For the werehog, remove all of the impassable barriers so you can run past enemies, chuck out the jazz music (both those things happen in Eggmanland and hub areas and it's a distinct improvement), and fill in a bunch of the bottomless pits, or at least respawn the player without dying at the start of the section again. Also fix the balance sections, especially later on when it's all big round pipes that you can't grab back on to. If it's possible to make those changes then it would be average to pretty drat good throughout, rather than having frequent bouts of screaming frustration. Apparently fans have decided to name the cat from the Sonic Forces prequel comic after his creator, Ian Flynn https://twitter.com/NibrocRock/status/939278134452609024 (Incidentally Nibroc both makes and retweets a lot of good Sonic fanart)

Sonic X Eggman is just games Eggman, who is somewhere between Archie Eggman and Boom Eggman. SU Robotnik is just SatAM Robotnik minus the illusion of dignity.

The way Ian Flynn has Eggman be so absurdly, nonchalantly evil that it wraps around to being comical is such a perfect take on the character. He's got all of the fun and charisma that Mike Pollock's Robotnik brought to the table while still being as cruel and dangerous as SatAM Robotnik was made out to be.

I definitely agree Archie Eggman is the best and most terrifying Eggman. All in all I think the Flynn comics are the best writing in all of Sonic, with the most thought and consideration put into how to make the characters interesting, and knows how to use it's large pool of characters to it's advantage.

I got to talk to Ian Flynn at a con in November and he was pretty cool. One thing that I find really interesting about his comics is how he loves to dig deeply into super obscure Sonic lore. Like, Honey the Cat was a character that was cut from Sonic the Fighters that's in a beta version and is based on Honey from Fighting Vipers. I asked him if there was any Sonic game he hadn't referenced yet, and he told me that Sonic Labyrinth might be it. The thing that was always kind of cool about the Archie comics is that it took all this vastly different Sonic media and tried to make it into a single universe. It was a weird hodge-podge of SatAM, AoStH and the actual games. They never really referenced Sonic Underground much or at all, and I can't blame them for that. Oh, speaking of... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zl4DBiAOKkI

Honey's not that obscure anymore, she's playable in the PS3 version of Sonic The Fighters.

So, I've been watching Sonic Boom despite my previous feelings about it because my girlfriend was getting into it, and... ... Okay. I'm going to have to admit. I've been wrong about this show. I still don't like Knuckles at all and the jokes they make at Amy's expense are still a bit "eh", but it's a fair bit better than I expected. I feel bad for how down I've been on it.
