It plays slow because PAL (U.K., aus, etc) is 50hz and NTSC (USA, Japan, etc) is 60hz. Rather than fix the game to run right at 50hz, they just let it run 17% slower. Granted, so many things in that era were built on or around tv refresh rates, fixing it for 50hz probably would have been a huge job.

As someone whose first video game was the PAL Sonic 1 with the 50hz soundtrack I just want to tell you all that it's the clearly superior version, and my argument for this is: everything was the best during my childhood

Fixing stuff like making the music not run slow was easy and something that 90% of games did right even at the time, Sonic was just a dumb rush/didn't care job.

Speaking of music as awesome as the Sonic stuff in Lego Dimensions looks I'm at least a little bit bummed after watching this that someone didn't want to/couldn't pay Nakamura for the Sonic 1 (and probably 2?) stuff. Or maybe my hearing is real bad and they are using the Green Hill Zone theme but like, some slightly off version of the original theme.
