The weirdest part about classic sonic’s music in Forces is that it was mostly done by Naofumi Hataya. You know, the same one who did most of the US/JP CD soundtrack as well as a bunch of other quality songs throughout the franchise, plus NiGHTS and countless other Sega games. Some of the tracks are ok, (if not very Sonic-y) but overall it’s just a big letdown.

Speaking of Sonic music and the Genesis, I was at Segafest last week. I’ll post pics/videos when I’m less lazy. They had a “Sonic music DJ Experience” happening and the guy who sings the Forces song(s?) got onstage and started singing the avatar stage music live.

I have no idea and kindof want to hear the story of Forces' development because that game was rushed to poo poo and it SHOWS

With 06 we eventually found out that they had a strict deadline to coincide with the release of the 360, and the team got cut in half TWICE. So I'm wondering what the gently caress happened here

Me too; Forces was at least released at a lower price, but things like Infinite getting a backstory in both comic and DLC form and a whole vocal theme point to a much bigger initial project. My hope is that they just get straight on with a bigger, better sequel; they aren't likely to ditch the avatar, given how much everyone ended up loving it, and it gives them a better avenue to slow the action down and pad out the levels than, say, the werehog.

On a totally unrelated note, I realised today that we haven't had a Dimps game since 2013, and I'm... actually kind of sad about that? Sonic 4 was a shitshow, but the Advance and Rush games are pretty fondly remembered overall, and they got the characterisation of the cast down incredibly well, with Knuckles in particular actually being quick to anger rather than sounding chill as hell in the 3D games. Hell, even Cream was a fun-rear end character, especially in Rush, where her entire role was to make Blaze look like a jackass.

I actually miss Dimps, and it doesn't look like there's anything on the horizon. Fruitbat sad now.

Look on the bright side.

I don’t like Dimps and I hope they go away forever now that we finally got a good Dragon Ball game and a good Sonic game in the last year.

I always found the GBA and DS Sonic games to be very dull but I wouldn’t call them bad. The more terrible Sonic games still kept my interest longer than them though

Not a full album that I know of and there's a bunch of other Genesis arrangements of this same track on youtube, but I thought "Pokey Means Business" from Earthbound translates well to the Genesis.

The genesis sound module also supported all sorts of weird things that can only be done with a synth based system, like being able to altar the music track based on what’s going on in the game

For example, sonic getting speed shoes can send a signal to the sound chip saying “crank up the tempo” and it’s full synth so it just, yknow, raises the tempo
But if you did that on a sample based system
or something new (like mania) you’d have to speed it up and then try to pitch it down
Re:the bolded: Er, no? You can speed up the tempo in a sample-based setup just fine, usually. Unless your samples are set to have an incredibly long release when the note ends (or to disregard ADSR entirely - which I know is more a synth thing and less a sample thing, but :ssh: - and just play the sample out in its entirety), you're not likely to notice much difference. Super Mario World and Super Mario Kart both provide examples, with the tempo adjusting when the timer goes under 100 or when you're on the final lap, respectively.

All this talk ahout emulating Genesis music reminds of just hpw awful literally everything about Classic Sonic is in Forces. Gameplay, levels, and music. Especially the music. I dunno, I really like "Ghost Town". Like, it'd be fair to say it's not the most Sonic-y track in existence, but on the other hand, it's a pretty authentic YM2612 sound that'd be right at home in one of Naofumi Hataya's other FM works like The Hybrid Front.

Ghost Town is the best one and Casino Forest is pretty good too. Death Egg is mostly decent as well, but it doesn’t fit the level. Forces’ Death Egg Zone was basically a Generations-style remake of the original S&K level, (complete with the act 1 boss lurking on the background) and it’s an absolute shame that they didn’t use the music from it.

Of course they didn't use S&K's Death Egg music, that might have made a Classic Sonic level a little bit less of a failure and at this point I think Sega purposely hosed it up out of spite toward Sonic Mania.

I never want to see Classic Sonic in a main Sonic game ever again. Let the Mania crew have it, and let Sonic Team or whatever handle the 3D modern Sonic/Avatar stuff.

I for one really like that all the returning levels got new tunes instead of the 100th remix of the same song. And I honestly like every single classic song too, although some are clearly better.

Iron Fortress was cool as poo poo.

I think the issue isn't that they were bad tunes, they were just put through a synthesised mangler until there was nothing left. :10bux: says the community starts putting out some quality remixes in no time.

I haven't checked in a long time but I wanna say those are separate tracks that were manually prepared for the new speed, not the original tracks being programatically sped up. That's how most if not all SNES games do that sort of thing.

People really want Iizuka to be a supervillain who's deliberately out to ruin Sonic and who hates the Mania team despite being one of the main reasons they received the opportunity to make it at all, instead of being just, like, a guy who debatedly makes bad decisions about game design or something.

he's not correct about sample-based systems, but he's absolutely right as it pertains to CD and Mania, because those games use straight up pre-recorded music tracks. you can do the speed shoes effect with those, but it's... a trick and doesn't always sound right.

No, SMW actually speeds up the music. If you hack in a level that keeps resetting the timer to 100, when the music speeds up, it'll get faster and faster each time.

Fair enough! There are definitely other games that have different tracks for different speeds and I assumed SMW was the same, probably based on old SPC rips or what have you.

The magazine comes out in a few days so I might pick it up and try to translate some of it.
