Oh yeah, I recall that. Was a really neat idea in concept at least. Makes me wonder what he'd do with the time travel gimmick it it ever came back for a 'CD 2' game. I should probably wait and see how Mania goes first though.

Considering the obscure references in Mania, I'm wondering what R-9 is a throwback to.

The level files in Sonic CD were originally stored in folders labeled R1-R8, with R2 being excluded (the cut desert level you can see in the PC version's loading screen). Final Fever in this case then would be "R9."

Incidentally, are there any good Sonic games on PC or 3DS? I'm having a lot of fun with Generations, but it's also the only Sonic game I've played other than Sonic Adventure 2, so I've missed out on, like, a lot.

Well, it's emulated, but Sonic 3 & Knuckles is $5 on Steam, and with the Workshop you can play Sonic 3 Complete, which lets you tweak the game in ways like having Sonic 2-Taxman style Tails assist (up+A), restoring the original level order, even enabling the PC S&K Collection music. It's as close to a perfect version of the game there is.

Also once you're done with Generations, you could try installing the Unleashed mod to play the day stages from Sonic Unleashed.

How do you get this to work? I tried running one of the versions on the workshop and it was just like, knuckles had weird music with no other changes I noticed. Where are the options?

This is the one you should be subscribed to, since it was uploaded by the lead programmer. Any duplicates that might be up I have no idea about. The options should be selectable right from the start.

Basically Iizuka talks out his rear end PR-wise, which is nothing new. Anyone watching gameplay of Sonic 4 or the side-scrolling bits of Colors knew immediately they weren't bothering to go for a classic feel. Meanwhile, Mania's engine has physics literally reverse-engineered from the Genesis games and videos of it so far seem to speak for themselves.

Also good reading

I really wanted to see a Sonic equivalent of Kaizo Mario. I had fun playing around with ideas and doodling stupid traps, but I don't think I went as stupid unfun hard as I could have. I would like to work on it more in the future, but between apathy and Sonic Mania itself I doubt it. First person to link to a vod, stream, etc of themselves beating all 6 acts gets a free copy of Sonic Mania. Already have a copy? Donate it it to a friend or your local animal shelter. Save states are encouraged, plenty of lives, final destination.

I'm guessing that's the case as there are some places where it looks like they meant to have a transition beforehand but didn't end up implementing it (such as your character falling into Hydrocity despite the previous stage ending normally).

Also I just noticed this but aside from Mirage Saloon there's another cameo appearance during the Act 2 Metallic Madness boss (not sure if this only happens when playing as Sonic but one of the capsules Eggman's machine can drop out is a tiny Amy who can grab and immobilize you ala the first stage of Sonic CD).

The Amy Doll, with her off appearance and red-baubled antennae, is also an adjacent reference to Sonic R's resident creepypasta machine, Tails Doll.
