The story about the rise of identity politics was really loving good, and the complete shift into "donald trump will start world wars 3, 4, and 5" pieces is really bad so the answer to "is there something better" is no, not for free. the answer to "when" is "as soon as people realized donald freaking trump, of all people, was going to be the republican nominee" Jen X fucked around with this message at 05:59 on Jul 29, 2016 |

Even the best online news sources will only be a splash of decent reporting and well researched articles, buried under a pile of dumb clickbait that reads like someone's personal blog entry. The idea is that you don't read it all indiscriminately, you find the sections and the sources you like, use some sort of curation service or create your own by following the journalists you like on twitter or having friends who will share decent things on facebook.

CaptainSarcastic posted:Seriouspost: I'd recommend Harper's Magazine, if you aren't already familiar with it. Second oldest continuously-published magazine in the United States, and maintains a pretty respectable standard of quality in writing and analysis. It's not really a news magazine, though. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGGrvn44LNA I used to subscribe to Harpers for a whole bunch of years. I found it pretty terrible in election years, so much so that I cancelled the subscription for that year (and then never bothered resubscribing after 2008). Maybe the internet has made everything else so awful that Harpers is now worth reading even in a year like this when I'm sure it's nothing but politics wall to wall. I think the answer is that everything in media is terrible for 1 out of 4 years and the only solution is to dig a hole, get in it, and then pull a heavy rock onto the top of the hole.
