My workplace offers flexitime which means we can start and end the day however it suits us as long as we put in 40 hours a week and work between certain core hours during the day, so no sleeping in till 11 am or leaving before 3pm. I generally do 9 to 5 myself though, so hello OP.

This is probably somewhat ignorant of me but I consider a salaried office job to be the default for any adult in a first-world country. It's not that I look down on anybody it's just that whenever I hear anybody talking about work I assume they mean sitting at a desk in an office. It's what most people I know do. It's what my parents did and most of my childhood friends' parents did and probably what most of my childhood friends are doing now. I'm a middle-class white person you see.

this is what I do now. I started about 9-5 but I hated it. If I leave after like 4:30, BART (train system) turns into a lovely sweat armpit fest with everyone crowded like a can of sardines and it's awful, so it's both more pleasant going to work and coming home.

I'd prefer 4 x 10 hour days though than 5x8 but oh well. I had that on an old job and it owned having three-day weekends.

I mostly do 7:30-~8:00am to whenever I run out of poo poo to do in the office. Sometimes its as early as lunch, sometimes it's as late as 9pm. Normally I'm out of the office by 4:30pm since a big chunk of my job seems to have become just waiting for clients to tell me they have the info they asked for or waiting on conference calls to go over information with them. I take breaks for as long as I like, make salary with profit sharing incentives.

Does everyone posting that they have a literal 9-5 job get a paid lunch break?

Because every job I've ever worked is never just 8 hours, it's 8.5 or 9 hours due to having a 30 minute or 1 hour lunch break.

My job right now is 9-6 because I get an hour for lunch. I have never had a literal 9-5 job.

i work traditional hours and it's great compared to my 2pm-10:30pm (or sometimes later) Wednesday - Sunday hours when I was cooking

i don't make fun of people for being lazy at home at 10am or whatever, I just make fun of them for being the service class that has to support the fun weekend times for everyone else and never enjoy holidays/weekends themselves

Worked for one of the too big to fail banks. It was pretty neat to have every weekend off. What was crap was the fact that every time you want to go to a doctor or some office to manage poo poo, you have to take a day off.
It was the best job I've ever had, but the stereotype became strong after two years. These days I work 8-20 and I get way more days off, even during the week.

I am a strong supporter of closed stores on Sundays and holidays. Employees in supermarkets may be weird or whatever, but they deserve time off with their families too. Especially when the majority of them are mothers.
During our glorious communist era people used to work 6 hours instead of 8, so no unemployed, no overworked stressed out people and such. Good times.

Mine's not literally 9-5. It's 8.30 til 5, hour for lunch. Or 9-5.30. Or 7.5 hours + 1 hour lunch from whenever you turn up. They're pretty flexible on starting times.

I had a 9-5 and a 9-6, and one of them sucked because it was tech support and the phone never stopped ringing. They had no automated phone system hooked up, so if someone didn't get through to one of the two techs working, they get a busy signal! This was for a fairly large audio equipment/software company too. I went crazy and quit when my jaw started to dislocate and I could eat nothing but oatmeal.

I'm a coder now, and I come in and out of work anytime I want, and it loving rules.

also the owner of the company buys us all lunch on Fridays and it's always from someplace good, sometime we get random food throughout the week too

I work an 8:45-4:45 office job (leaving in a month to teach though) and it would rule if it wasn't an hour from where I live. Essentially all of my work is done by 12 and I'm either on SA or listening to podcasts or both for the rest of the day.

that being said I'm glad to be on my out

Yes and no. I spent too many years writing code. The official hours were usually 8-5 with an hour for lunch (barring special projects, of course... some things need to be put into production overnight) , but then everyone was afraid to be the first guy out the door. But I wasn't. I worked to live, I didn't live to work... some agreed with me but were too chicken poo poo to stand up for themselves.

So yeah I didn't last long in that environment. Too unwilling to pretend like I was so unproductive that I had to stay until 7 to finish my tasks.
