I saw this fat piece of poo poo and his step dad wrestle a guy to the ground once and they laid on top of him while waiting for the cops to show up. The whole time the guy they were sitting on kept screaming "I want to see some ID!" Over and over for like 5 minutes. The cops came and arrested the guy and that is the time I saw a citizen's arrest.

Citizen's arrests happen all the time, most common is store security holding shoplifters until the cops come.

Once I saw a couple white dudes kicking a black guy's rear end in a grocery store parking lot. I asked them what was up and they told me he stole some poo poo. "Maybe call the real police?" I asked. "Oh god yes, please." the black guy responded. Then they all went back to the grocery store to settle it like weenies (i.e. by calling the police). Does that count?

One time when I was a kid at school, some smaller kid insulted me in some way (maybe called me fat or something) so I grabbed his arm and drug him to one of the campus supervisors and told her about it So yeah I made a citizen's arrest

I once saw a guy sprinting down the street with a huge purse and behind him was a cop yelling for him to stop and some guy walking down the street stuck his leg out, tripped the guy with the purse, and kicked him a few times while he was down until the cop caught up, put his hands on the guy's shoulders and said between huff and puffs "Thanks, good job, I got it from here," and then handcuffed the guy. It would have been funnier if the cop had said "I got it from here" and kicked the guy a few more times. I guess it wasn't a citizen's arrest, but maybe it was citizen brutality?

I watched a Rentacop arrest a drunk guy in a hospital. His crime was being drunk, then going to the hospital.

My high school had a special ed department and they would let the retarded kids stand in the hallways between the regular classes. This one retard would always shout "citizens arrest" and try to grab the pretty girls whenever they walked by. I don't know if he ever got one but I always hoped for him.

Haha. They usually just tell you they'll get the judge for you and that's it. Also, regarding her argument: quote:It appears to be a belief based on a misunderstanding of what the Articles of Confederation says, combined with other selective readings of the law. When I worked retail (Circuit City and Staples) they were both pretty adamant that you don't physically restrain anyone because it wasn't worth putting yourself at risk for the sake of the merchandise. I was incredibly surprised the first few times I saw Walmart LP in action as they act no different than the police most times.

Yeah, I mean my retail jobs had the same stance, but while the stated reason was "it's not worth our valued employees risking their safety for merch," and the actual reason was "it's not worth the potential litigation if an employee gets knifed trying to stop a theft", the only people I've ever heard claim "LP/employees won't touch you because it's technically assault" have been the people doing the stealing.

I'm sure you're right with regard to insurance reasons, when I was supervising it really came down to me not expecting these guys (most of them still in their teens) to fight with a crackhead in the parking lot over $80 worth of toner. On a hilariously opposite end of the spectrum checkout this Walmart LP team! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IdcYEQ3WiF0

I agree with you, the reasons will vary from store to store, but the idea that any individual, be it wage slave, LP or random customer, is legally prevented from tackling a shoplifter to the ground is silly as hell, and like I said is almost always something you hear from a habitual thief/shoplifter. It makes it all the more funny when you actually do see poo poo go down and the shoplifter is screaming about suing for assault or asking for a badge or whatever. When I worked retail I must have had half a dozen or so people arrested for shoplifting. My store was located across from a strip mall that had an actual cop patrolling almost constantly, so police assistance was never more than 30 seconds away. TBH some of the things I did to those shoplifters to gently caress with them were way more satisfying than physically accosting them. The phrase "you know there's a camera literally right above you, right?" was used more than once, and the reactions were always hilarious.
