"The whole thing with that specific song — as well as several of the other songs — was their desire for a technical perfection that would have been easy in these days of computer editing but which, back then, we had to achieve manually. Lars's playing had to be extremely tight, and we did 20‑ to 30‑second segments with me punching in and out over 18 drum tracks. When we got a good bit, we'd sit and listen to it a couple of times to make sure it was cool, and if, say, one hi‑hat hit was a little late, I'd chop out a tiny bit of tape with a razor to make it exactly right. That was a long and tiring process, and whereas it would now take about half a day to complete one of those drum tracks, back then it took us a minimum of three to four days. For each song I had a big envelope full of bits of two‑inch tape that I had chopped out, and I remember joking to Lars that they should hold a competition for the fans, enabling them to win lost bits from his drum tracks... He didn't find that at all amusing.

I used to not get it, but they understood in their day what I'm only starting to understand: That metal, and thrash metal specifically, is loving silly and not a deathly serious matter for raining blood, ktulu's and sanitariums, and symphonies of destruction. Sometimes you just need to mosh and clap with one hand. anthrax wrote more than their fair share of po-faced serious poo poo to counterbalance all the songs about comic books and stephen king novels https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gtD_GUvu-wc

Laserface posted:All their live stuff is played a step or two down. my band did it too because its way easier to play show after show (as a singer) when you're only hitting half your range than if you're playing it in E every night. nah they've been tuning to e flat live since the mid-90s, but that was primarily so they didn't have to keep switching guitars between the load and earlier stuff still too high for james' voice

here's a weird one though- slayer tuned to d for live undead where they re-recorded a bunch of show no mercy stuff that was originally in e i wonder why they didn't stick with that instead of tuning back up to e flat for chemical warfare and everything after until the late 90s
