someone mentioned chenming/chieftec/antec dragon cases earlier in this thread. They occasionally pop up on Ebay but shipping is always crazy (since it's a big steel case). Does anyone know where chieftec dragons can be found these days?

thread inspired me to dig up a record of the PC my parents bought from a supermarket in 2004:

that front panel had a sweet slide-down action. and best of all, it came with an OEM graphics card. behold, the geforce 6610XL:

yeah, that's a scart output breakout panel.

ya know, i was gonna build a 2000-ish computer too

the problem was i bought all the parts except for the case but it turned out the cool motherboard i bought has 8 expansion slots and all the cheap cases are at least 7 at most

id have to get one thats at least like 60 bucks and also huge so i decided to wait until i found an old beige one w/ 8 slots but i never really did so thats why i have a pile of old computer parts on my desk

Aldi always had these weird XL versions of gfx cards that never matched any of the retail models. They'd have more ram but shittier clock speeds or something like that.

Also Medion pc's were overheating garbage that had suicidal power supplies

you just have to keep looking, and don't be afraid to put in really low offers. i got a "new" boxed full-height six-bay one for £30 delivered.

a lot of the time they're not listed as chieftec or dragon cases. try searching for "full tower" and filtering out the higher-priced ones.

thats a good point. it would be interesting to see a single core cpu benchmark. i mean, i know modern stuff has gotten much more efficient, but it would be neat to see the comparison actually made

surely an early 2000s build warrants a globalwin 802?

Athlon X64 X2 4400+ with both cores working
1GB ram (it had 2GB but it kernel panics on boot because that is TOO MUCH MEMORY MAN)
Geforce 6800GT w/Zalman cooler
IBM Deathstar 60GB IDE hdd because SATA isn't happening anytime soon (hopefully replacing with a CF IDE adapter and 32GB card later)
Pinnacle PCTV Pro PCI hooked up to the latest greatest Emotion Engine based game console
SoundBlaster Live

I guess not all of it is period authentic but it's the next best thing after that server board fried.

well, i cant try to compete with that bitchin bebox. i did dig out my nf7 from the pile into which it had been cast years ago

its 3-5 years too young for this thread, though, depending on if you look at the video card or not. i might have a radeon 9600 or something to make it more period-correct. i have my old riced out case from high school that this board was in, and probably a boot drive that is still set up for it, but they are kind of hard to get to right now. i probably wont dig it out anytime soon

i also found this machine, which i think is about as old. netburst, lol

i think its a dual 2.4 prestonia, it has like a gig of fancy heatspreader OCZ ram (unbuffered!) and an agp slot. x850xt. i used to have a scsi card in there with a 4-tray hotswap bay in front, but there wasnt room for the drives and the redundant 2U power supply up top. its got sata onboard so i guess i had an additional drive in there at one time. iirc the system is on that 60gb-ish ide deathstar, but i didnt want to fire it up this late at night. lol

Oh man that brings back memories

Back in 1997 or so I finally made the switch from using the family Mac to building my own PC, going from a Performa 630 33mhz to a beastly Pentium II 333mhz

While picking my parts at the local PC pusher I wanted to get a Quantum Bigfoot but the guy at the store told me it was slow and crappy and what you really want is a Quantum Fireball
It was a real memorable experience, "PC By Night" was run by two nerds sitting in recliners wearing all black goth outfits with ridiculous John Romero hair. Then one of them got a girlfriend, cut his hair and started wearing a plaid shirt and I think that was their downfall.

It really was like the polar opposite of the Apple stores, I still miss the place.

cant be stealthy if you have a quantum fireball. i bet a bunch of them still work, tho. they were weird like that, i think the ones i had either failed within the first year, or never. i wonder if this bigfoot can be coaxed into functionality

witness my y2k-as-gently caress mousepad

actually, its copyright 96. i guess i got it kinda late in the game

good eye, that is indeed a pc-dl. wasnt planning on getting rid of it. maybe ill see if it boots today. it has a voltmod on it that iirc got disconnected so idk what its status is.

why not get some noconas and a board with pci-e? that would be p much the "best" workstation netburst setup, and you can still pinmod overclock em. probably easier to find nowadays too

Mostly because any workstation 604 board is $$$ on eBay, plus then I'd need coolers that fit Nocona mounts and a backplate.

I already have a pair of 3.2/2M Gallatins and a couple of copper Prestonia heatsinks.

as a followup to this, the pc-dl doesnt seem to post, so im gonna shelve it for awhile until i have the time and space to dick with it. it does have a wire going to nothing on the voltmod (that i didnt do, so i will have to figure it out) so it might be more involved than usual. i do have a tyan i7505 board with an agp slot for it if i cant get this one going again i guess
