Hi, ScreamingLlama here, fresh off my latest probation after being relentlessly bullied by a bunch of hippy-dippy hypocrites with the mentality of unmedicated junior highschoolers . Welcome to the August thread for AusPol, a Green Party echo chamber ringing with the howls of perpetually outraged SJWs, the jeers of stoned latte-sipping hipsters and the furious masturbation of self-styled political pundits.

After a long, exhausting knife-edge election, we ended up with more or less the same lovely government with the same lovely policies. Things took a turn for the interesting, though, when it turned out that the Northern Territory was secretly running its juvenile detention facilities in a similar manner to the reform schools of old. Another Royal Commission is in the works.

Our Politicians And Their Parties

Liberal Party of Australia and National Party/Liberal National Party

Lead (for a certain value of 'leadership') by the ultra-capitalist, refugee-torturing, smug bastard Malcolm "Jobs and Growth" Turnbull after having knifed Tony "Keep Calm And Eat Raw Onion" Abbott, the LNP maintains a strong policy of torturing refugees, pissing on the poor and disabled, demanding LGBTs have less rights, slashing funding to public services and handing billions in tax breaks to rich people who don't need them.

Australian Labor Party

Eight years ago, the ALP were the proud ruling party making the Australian economy soar and making us look like rockstars on the global stage. Now, after years of infighting, arrogant posturing and pretending not to hear the electorate, they have been consigned to opposition for another term, with Bill "I Can't Remember That Prick's Name" Shorten holding onto the steering yoke with a confused look on his face as his clueless party colleagues self-destructively egg him on. The ALP maintains a strong platform of torturing refugees, spending exorbitant amounts of money on harebrained schemes, pretending half their party doesn't want people to get gay married right the hell now, slashing funding to business incentives and handing out billions in aid to failed states.

The Greens

Composed of most of the Auspol regulars and a bunch of tree-hugging, unvaccinated, stoner hippy twats, The Greens oppose the production of nuclear medicine, the fluoridation of drinking water, particle research, genetic engineering and reprocessing of nuclear waste even though these things would greatly benefit Australia. All Greens bow before the altar of Richard DiNatale.

One Nation, led by recent Senator-elect Pauline Hanson (despite her recently discovered Middle Eastern ancestry), is an anti-Muslim, anti-halal, anti-immigrant, anti-gay, anti-indigenous white supremacist party bent of making sure that only fair-skinned flaxen-haired Anglo-Saxon Christians are permitted to be Australian. One Nation members and supporters both are uniformly terrible people.

Census Battles Over "No Religion"

The Australian Bureau of Statistics’ decision to place the option of “no religion” above the list of different religions in the upcoming census has ruffled feathers in some Christian communities, with people concerned that an increase in people identifying as “no religion” will adversely affect their religions.

The ABS made the decision to change the order of options on the question to try to capture a more accurate record of people who do not hold a faith in Australia, believing that when “no religion” was the last option on the census, many who were no longer actively involved in a religious organisation listed the faith they were brought up in.

In an opinion piece in Catholic Weekly on Friday, Monica Doumit criticised the Atheist Foundation of Australia’s campaign for more people to check the “no religion” box, and while the piece focuses on what constitutes Christianity, it does make the case for people to tick the “Catholic” box:

“Encouraging people to answer ‘Catholic’ on this census is not about winning a numbers game against the atheists (as sweet as that victory would be!) It is about reminding people who would be tempted to think that their lives are such that they could never be part of the Christian family that there is nothing which can separate them from the love of God.”

It’s not just the Catholics. Christian website Salt Shakers has written about an email that is being forwarded that includes the following information:

“Bear in mind that although many Australians have no religion these days, the Muslim population in Australia will all declare that they are Muslim and this fact will be counted to ascertain what type of country we are in regard to religion.

Even though you may now have no religion, please consider entering the religion you were christened or born into, when answering this question. Otherwise in time Australia will officially be declared to be a Muslim country — because the Australian Bureau of Statistics Census will reflect this.

Just imagine the repercussions if that were to happen. For Australia’s future please pass this message on to your family members and friends.”

While Salt Shakers quotes the email, it doesn’t seem to endorse its contents.

Salt Shakers encourages readers to talk about Muslims who feel afraid to declare their religion on the census. At the last census, 22% of Australians identified as having no religion, the largest number in the population except for Catholics, who were 25% of the population.

Quick question, I'm seeing a lot of calls and encouragement to boycott the census for a number of reasons. But skipping the census carries a fine, yes? Do they actually fine people or is it more of a threat without any real legal mechanism too?

I guess I have the same question about voting; if I hadn't voted in the last election, how would they know enough to both find out that I didn't and track down my address in order to fine me (assume I failed to register to vote).

I forgot to vote in the qld state election last year and the the local Gold Coast municipal elections and I didn't get a fine, should I be worried that they're tracking me down now waiting to serve me with a number of outstanding charges?

I think that if you fill it in but fudge the data, they can't fine you. Also I think it was some ridiculously low number of actual fines relative to how many people completed the census but ????

I was having a debate with my family last night and I'm pretty mad about the way they are approaching this because I feel like the quality of the data will be lower and any inference drawn will be poo poo.

If you're not registered they can't do anything about you not voting. Like voting, you should probably do the census anyway.

How to skip the census. Be in transit. The census is collected by household so if you weren't part of a household on the night you aren't counted.

Yes they do fine people and the fines are by the day until you comply. There are very serious fines for false or misleading data (arguably the strategy above is covered by the later). None the less the current arrangements are 100% bullshit and they can go and gently caress themselves.
