So I watched Pixar's The Good Dinosaur with my daughters last night. I'd never seen it before but I'd heard good things. Well I was mislead because what the hell, movie? I've never watched a movie so gratuitously sad. Not even in a good way, it was just... sadness porn. To compare it to another dinosaur movie, it's as if the creators of the Good Dinosaur wanted to capture the moment Littlefoot's mother died in Land Before Time and stretch that feeling out for the duration of an entire film. I can't imagine who would think this movie would be something parents would want to see with their children, or that children would want to watch by themselves. From the unsatisfying and hollow character interactions to the villains that manage to be terrifying without being entertaining and the perils that are tragic rather than thrilling, nothing about this story was good or fun. What was even the point of this film? What was the story the filmmakers wanted to tell? Why dinosaurs? I can think of so many much more amazing and entertaining things to do with the concept of dinosaurs and humans living side by side, and instead we get something where a committee of writers got together and were told to brainstorm sad ideas. 2/5 (2 points for the admittedly excellent background art) would not watch again.
