This last assault was supposed to win the war. At least, that was the plan. But on July 9th two weeks after the 5th Mechanized Infantry Division began it's attack heading South into central Poland the plan showed signs of being totally bunk. You would know, you were assigned to the divisions recon battalion (4th squadron of the 12th Cavalry, 500 men, mostly mounted on horseback.) and you've been at the tip of the spear for the entire push. The plan was to push through the city of Lodz, head North-East and possibly link up with NATO troops thought to be on the Baltic Coast. However due to major intelligence failures, no one expected the Soviets to already have entire divisions counter-attacking from the East. The 5th never made it to Lodz and over the course of several days the 5th Division was forced to retreat West to the city of Kalisz, with the 4-12 remaining at the back of the column to keep an eye on the rear as the division retreated.

This proved to be a smart move, as the 4-12 was able to alert command of the Soviet tank column closing in on Kalisz. 3-70 Armored took all 10 of their M1E2 tanks and the last of their fuel to confront the advancing tank column, to outstanding success. By the end of the day there were countless smoldering Soviet vehicles just outside of Kalisz. However friendly units to the North had reported that they had been crushed by advancing Polish tank columns, and they were heading straight towards Kalisz. Around the same time this news arrived Soviet infantry began probing the city from the South and more Soviet forces were coming from the East despite the 3-70s best efforts. The 4-12, now down to 200 men total, regrouped with the rest of the division in Kalisz.

On the evening of July 16th all of the units armor divisions were buzzing with activity, you watched as support units loaded M1 tanks with fuel and massive 120mm shells. They had orders to push South and crush any enemy troops encountered to clear an escape route for the entire division. In the morning hours of July 17th, 3 hours before dawn, the Soviet forces struck the city of Kalisz interrupting the operation. Most of the tanks had already left and began their push South, so only a few tanks remained to fend off the attacking Soviets. At 4AM the shelling began, massive shells zipped through the city and slammed into buildings indiscriminately, tearing them to shreds like they were made of paper. The tank commanders began shouting from the hatches of their tanks for everyone with a smoke grenade to use it. When it was clear that everyone was complying with the request, the tankers ducked back into their tanks and popped off the smoke grenade launchers on their M1s. The smoke was enough to blind the Soviet tanks, while the M1s were able to see through the smoke with their thermal sights and deliver accurate counter-fire.

This effective counter-measure provoked the Soviet forces into an all-out assault, putting major fire on the town, with all manner of tank and armored vehicle baring down on the city. Merely 10 minutes after this assault began, the 4-12 was down to fifty men, most of the unit dead or missing. Despite the 5th giving it to the Soviets as hard as they got it, the 5th was being overrun before your eyes.

Sgt. Cuithbeart "Drives" MacMharcais sits in the drivers seat of the Humvee, the window is down and his Sterling is in his hands, he's scanning for targets but doesn't see any.
Sgt. Ezekiel "Zeke" White is manning the .50 cal, he has exhausted his supply of ammunition for the weapon during the course of the battle but is still on the lookout for targets.
Private Tristan Morris is in the back, gripping his L1A1 tight and waiting for another assault to begin.
1st LT Bryce Leblanc sits in the front passenger seat, with his ear closely glued to the vehicles built in long range radio. It's a great effort to make anything out in all of the chaos, men are screaming enemy positions and requests for reinforcements so often it's impossible to hear anything. You begin to hear someone barking orders over the radio to "shut the hell up!" and surprisingly, people listen. It's the division commander, and he says "It's over! Good luck, you're all on your own!"

As if to punctuate this insanity, large caliber shells begin slamming into the ground, dangerously close to your vehicle. One after the other, each explosion shaking you to your core.

How do you proceed?

And you prevet, uh..."
Drives turns around in the seat and looks at Morris. "Morris was it? Check that Jerry can behind you, we's need an accurate account of how much petrol we have if we're to survive this fooking catastrophe"

You glance down at the fuel gauge, and notice the little arrow rests on the "Full" symbol. Since most of the 4-12 rode horseback it wasn't a hard decision to keep one of the only working Humvees full of gas at all times.

Hearing the LT command you to drive you feel your foot get heavy, describe how you drive your vehicle out of the area and roll two WVD checks.

Please roll a RCN check to look for targets

After directing your squad you hear some Polish coming in from the radio, make a LNG-Polish check to try to make out what is being transmitted

"uh, Aye suir, moving out."

You successfully pull the humvee out of its parked position and head directly South on a dirt road heading away from the city. The air becomes thick with black smoke and the reason becomes clear all too suddenly, a wrecked T-72 lies in the middle of the road burning. With steady precision you manage to avoid the tank without slowing down at all, turns out all that time driving like a lunatic to impress the birds in your parents Jag actually saved your life.

Further down South you see what appears to be Soviet forces already looting an American truck. Looks like at least two Soviet regulars and you don't have a rangefinder on you but your gut says they're between 200 and 300 meters out.

You steadily approach, the Humvees beaten suspension doesn't make the dirt road very pleasant to drive on. You close nearly half the distance when the looters spot you, and immediately raise their rifles and begin firing in automatic.

The bullets don't even land on the Humvee, you're used to hearing shots slam into your vehicle but luckily their first volley didn't bring about the familiar "tung tung tung!" of rounds slamming through sheet metal.

Your attention is quickly pulled to the source of gunfire, you scan the threat and notice there are three looters, two of them armed with rifles and following orders from a man with a submachine gun. They appear to be wearing Polish gear.

You've done a lot of things since the war began, but expertly running down a looter wasn't one of those things until just now. You expected to feel more of a bump when you ran over him, when you turned the vehicle around and got out to open fire you saw why. The looter was crushed into a muddy spot of soil, his twisted neck keeping his face pointing at a seemingly impossible angle.

The long years you've spent fighting the Soviet forces have kept your aim steady, you're so used to the weight of your issued service weapon that it feels like an extension of your arms. For most people it would be impossible to hit a target while they're in a vehicle that's speeding up and turning on a dime, but you're not most people and two of the five shots find their target, the looters body crumples in a heap as the shock sets in.

Your absolutely hard as rock poker face doesn't break, but your heart is racing and you're not sure what's going to happen when Sgt Drives hit the accelerator and pointed the vehicle at the looters. Your doubts were put to rest when your squad that you have expertly lead through-out this shitstorm of a campaign put two of the three looters out of action.

The last looter, the one who was giving orders with the submachine gun, is visibly shaken and throws his weapon down to the ground and dives for cover under the truck they were looting. He is shouting in Polish.

Before you managed to disable the two enemy soldiers, they manage to score 4 hits to the front of your vehicle. You however didn't notice any performance decrease during the firefight.

I'm so sorry I resolved the round before you posted, was a mistake and next time you'll get a chance to fight.

You scan the area for enemy troops, and what you see is a little more depressing than enemy troops.

Smoke and drestruction, in every direction.

After a few moments you don't hear a reply, you're about to repeat your order when you hear him shout "Kurwa!", and he shuffles out from under the truck and places his hands on his head.
Judging by his patches you guess he's something like a captain or an LT.

Relieving the dead enemy of their possessions you gather :

2 AK74s with almost empty magazines
2 full magazines
A fragmentation grenade
6 Russian MREs
And a hand-held Nintendo Game Boy.

That last item is extremely odd, you happen to know most electronics were fried by the EMPs. Why would a Polish guy be walking around with a broken Game Boy? You look for an on-switch, you didn't handle video-electronics a lot back home but you know they got on/off switches.
You find the on switch and give it a flick.

That was the most shocking thing to happen to you in the entire war, probably.

This man is cleaner than you'd expect anyone after a major battle to be, he even looks well fed. He's as defiant as he is pudgy and refuses to say anything other than,

**"Captain Kaczyński, Polish 10th Tank Division."

Everything about this man looks like someone from before the war. His uniform isn't torn and the Game Boy raises more questions than this man is willing to answer at the moment.

For a moment you don't think you'll find the keys, but right before you really worry you find the familiar drab color of an ammo can under the passengers seat. You pull it out, and it's very heavy. Opening it you find one 35 shot belt of .50 BMG and they keys, which after a couple of tries get the 2-1/2 ton truck going.

Captain Kaczyński : **"There's a city to the South East of here, they've declared themselves a free city and don't want to fight the war anymore. We passed by there a week ago, and they were selling real electronics. Hell if I know how they got their hands on working computer chips but they're repairing old electronics that got fried by the nukes going off.

**"Lukasz got that Game-thing in exchange for some gasoline and RPG rockets. We were mad at him until he let us play Tetris."

You hoist yourself into the back of the truck, hoping to find some of the last of the 5th divisions supplies that are rightfully yours. Instead of ammunition, medicine, or food, you find that this was one of the divisions "mobile fuel creation units", in other words this truck had a medium still built into the back and wasn't much good for hauling anymore.

There are five 20-liter jerry cans in the back, all of them are empty except one which is full.
