I pretty much avoid the SRX too in OG games until the last stages but some of the SR points in MD have caused me to say No Mercy to this game so I've been bringing it more often.

Played a bunch of English MD last night. Lot of fun. I can understand about 80% of what's going on which is an improvement over the 10% using friend's cliffnotes. The parts I struggle to understand are usually when the political plots come up and those filler hard sci-fi segments like warp routes and military doctrine (I'm amazed how many of these there are).

Best discovery so far is that Unison twin ability seems to last all stage as long as you don't split. Was it always like this??? Gonna use Russel for the first time ever.

AP seems overly plentiful. I'm up to like 11 movement blocks in the first 10 stages.

Only SR point I struggled with so far was the kill 14 units and land all your units within five turns.

I missed something regarding Josh. I guess I'll start spoiling since I'm like 12 stages in now:

Why's he resistant to Run/Glacis coming along for the ride and what does Kai not know about the ruinea ruins that Gilliam/Viletta know? That it was sabotaged or something?

It took me forever to realize who everyone was talking about in the game when they used this name.

I'm pleasantly surprised most of the names came out pretty intact.

The part that confused me is that Josh was very adamant that he'd be enough. It was Rim and Glacies that told him they were going to help. They just didn't seem to care about their fate!

Kai just followed his dumb order (which had to be issued a second time iirc). He did very little persuading during that scene.

Also re: sympathia events - they didn't ask for the sympathia mechs and the excellence mechs until the time stop attack on Troya. The ghosts come immediately afterwards.

Were any of the school pilots anything exceptional stat-wise? Latooni hangs out because of genius but I think that's it.

I don't mind twinning wuerger/falcon but it usually means giving the wuerger an optional weapon so he can counter. I think I may have used shishio blade for this before. I think I'll try them again cause I didn't use them at all in my last OGs game.

You can casually fix Arad's stats with a small amount of PP, it's not really a problem. You can call it a tax if you want. Wuerger and Falcon just don't complement each other and the complaint was more that their ace bonus requires them to be deployed together.

You can fix all of that stuff ofc, it's just work and more clicks. It's kind of like Gilliam's ace bonus slowing the game a tiny bit, it's just annoying.

Cause the combo attack is that good? I mean the Fairlions are pretty lovely units too but RHB is a very powerful move and Latooni+Fairlion = unhittable. It's keeping Shine alive that kind of sucks typically.

Unit balance seems pretty good in MD aside from the joke units. I'm not all happy about the Chevalier nerf, and did Hugo always start with Hit & Away? Cause it's annoying that isn't on Aqua.

Granteed is annoying to use too.

I don't remember if the Gigascudo was always as powerful as it is here too.

I really like Carla in the Giganscudo and using Unison with someone like Kyosuke.

The rest of my pilot swaps are just for funsies. It's too bad you lose some cutins on some swaps with their finishers, like Hakens or the ExBein.

Chevalier does fine behind Seolla/Falken fwiw. Move Arad up when you want to use the Chevalier P finishers and let TBS do its work from behind. Hopefully you'll ace Josh in time to deal with Arad/Seolla's ace problems? Not that far yet.

Just hoops. Still a dumb nerf IMO. I hate the Forte animations so I use Chevalier.

Actually the best thing to put in front of Josh/Chevalier or Granteed is Trombe. It and Ratsel have everything they need. Hit and away, long range attack and all attack, and 1 range P move finishers with or without Zengar nearby.

Elzam, Calvina and Kyosuke are my aces in the mid game. Kyosuke is my sleeper hit. Paired with Hugo and Garmraid, I basically have them chain attacking straight across the map since they have similar ranges. Same with Elzam and Josh. I love spamming chain attack.

As much as I love the opened units, the voice acting in them with alternate pilots can be a bit lacking. I'm just putting pilots in mechs where they say cool things but everyone seems to only have one line for each attack. I guess it's to be expected.

Still hate the flickerei. Still looking for a unit for Arrierre where she speaks more. Type 3 is the best I got so far where she will speak her full name after using the finisher.

5% for 1 adj, 10% for a full surround. Nothing else unless the visual indicators are wrong. It's useful but it's not as useful as using combo attacks or smite/raid against orgonite cloud users.

I almost never bother with relationship junk and forget about armor breaker a lot. I always get the surround + max break + 2 combo attacks + 1 Attacker for my SR points pre valor.

Once you have valor you can do w/e which you should start getting after that stage. I do have to use armor breaker to kill the early retreat bosses that have no SR point, but I haven't gotten anything good out of those so it's mostly for fun.

Continuous attack and then splitting the squad afterwards for an extra attack is also one of my go-to tricks in the early games.

The SR points completely fall apart after like stage 12 though. I can't even remember a vaguely difficult one since the "kill a bunch of units and dock on the ship by turn 5"

Also RIP me that Excellence attack I saw on youtube is actually their finisher they already have, I thought it was a different move AUGH

The English version of MD did give me a new sense of appreciation on just how bad the cast is these days. Everything is massive and diluted at this point. OG1 and OG2 felt like an adventure. MD feels like a bad military campaign filled with dumbos who are mostly along for the ride cause they have nothing better to do than blow poo poo up (not that anything is wrong with that)

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I don't feel like I missed too much by getting the cliff notes versions of the previous games in hindsight.

The thing is that yes, allied units in SRW are stronger than enemy units at a baseline, but SR points actually do require you to be overwhelmingly stronger than enemy units. If you're just trying to win, the game is pretty trivial. Winning under par is balanced around the idea that you have about 50% more movement speed, 100% more survivability, 200% more damage output, etc. than you actually do, which they're perfectly aware is already enough to sweep the enemy with minimal trying. Obviously how hard that is varies from game to game (say, any Z sequel vs. any OG game) but the point is that SRW isn't really about winning in the same way that Fire Emblem is. SRW is about winning with as much class as possible.

I should get back to playing NEO, which was actually a nasty resources game but did it well.
There are like two gamefaqs posters who LJ their play throughs and they are always all SR point no upgrade runs. It may seem like upgrading is required but the truth is that you probably just haven't mastered the systems.

It's a little annoying cause if you kill all the fodder they decide to turn on the afterburners and charge the boss. You are better off just leaving them some fodder so they tangle with the weaker enemies.

That was a fun mission but a mean surprise.
