Yeah, the "fire and pierce" one is funny because if you're familiar with the Japanese phrase you know exactly what it's supposed to be. Which just makes it sound even sillier. "RIP AND TEAR!"

At the time they didn't realize W-00 was still around. They assumed that he was lost in the transportation because nobody knew he ended up as Haken in the Endless Frontier

The original Gespenst Haken data was what was used to make the Phantom in Endless Frontier too. It was (as you'd guess by the name) designed to be his personal mech.

I'm a little unclear on some of these Endless Frontier details because the EF1 plot is a blur to me and I never played Exceed.

At the beginning of OG2, Axel comments that W00 isn't even a pilot. Why would they design a mech for a W that isn't a pilot? Honest question, no snide tone intended.

Shadow Mirror are defintely the sort of people that would design and build a custom mech for a pilot that is still an child before realizing that an actual human takes forever to grow compared to making a bioroid all set up and ready to go. Haken was lost as an infant so the last time Axel would have heard about him as of OG2 would have been when he was still a child. I think.

This is a very good answer, thank you!

OK language wizards I've got another one for you! The Grungust Type 2 finisher! I've managed to find stuff for the all the other Grungust attacks and stuff, but Honmeisatsu is eluding me. I'm sure it's something dark murder doomy calamitous karma-y from what I remember of the GBA and what the Grungust Kai's moves are called.

I've been doing some research on this lately, so it's lesson time! Irm's attacks are taken from Nine Star Astrology, which adopts some principles of feng shui. Honmeisatsu (本命殺) is one of the directions of misfortune that you want to avoid going in, in this case because it represents killing (殺) your heart's desire (本命), ie, it will lead to the undoing of whatever it is that you want the most. Ankensatsu, or "dark sword killing" (暗剣殺) represents a sword stabbing out at you from the shadows, ie, misfortune striking you in an unexpected way. I think Shungokuken (瞬獄剣) has a similar origin but I'm not sure off the top of my head?

The thing about Nine Star Astrology is that I'm pretty sure it came from Hindu, then got shipped to Chinese, then got shipped to Japanese. I would really like to find out if these direction names have equivalents in the original Hindu version of the astrology, but so far I haven't had any luck there.

Something I DID find a Hindu equivalent of was Keito-Rago Ken (計都羅黑剣), which literally translates to Ketu-Rahu Sword. This is brought up in OG2 in a discussion after Ryukooh brings up 羅黑神 (The god Rahu) in its initial warnings to its pilots, and the conversation turns to Irm's attack names. Ketu and Rahu represent the twin stars of misfortune in Nine Star Astrology.

Huh, I was wondering why I suddenly started getting a bunch of traffic.

So, I'm the creator of SRW DB and if anyone wants, I can answer questions on it - tech support (OK, I might not be able to help that much on this one), gameplay questions, SRW design, pre-planning and technical engine stuff, whatever you can think of really.

I haven't played it, but I can absolutely imagine the amount of labor that goes into something like this, both event scripting and story writing.

How much time would you say you invested in developing this SRC game, in terms of both overall start-to-finish date and sheer hour count?

I want to say about a year? Quite a lot of it is pre-production stuff though like having to translate all the Spirit Commands and Weapon Properties tooltips, which will probably save me a lot of time on my next project since I can reuse those parts.

I didn't count the sheer hours involved but it was created under a "jobless hobo" lifestyle circumstances, where I can afford to do something like jam in 6 hours a day on working on it when I feel like it.

This was a great post, thank you for elaborating on it! And congratulations on getting a full fan game finished. :)

So in continuing my learning about how SRW really works as opposed to my horrible flailing in the other games I've played, how is co-op attack damage determined? By which I mean, do you need to upgrade the weapons of both suits involved?

Also, I don't know how I even beat OG1/2 without using status effect weapons, now that I'm using poo poo like Armor Breaker, goddamn. :stare:

Yeah, you need to upgrade weapons of both things involved in a combination attack. That will raise the cumulative attack value for both people. For example, with Rampage Ghost, you upgrade Revolving Stake/Bunker and Oxtongue W/Howling X both in order to get a maximized bonus.

How do I play these games without knowing Japanese?

There are two answers. First, what people say above - You can start with the English translated games, and use those as a springboard into Japanese-only games if some of them pique your interest. Once you've played one, you've basically played them all.

Second - Katakana, the writing used for most robot, weapon, and part names in these games, is not hard to piece together. If you learned the English alphabet at 5, you can learn a basic Japanese alphabet as a grown adult without much trouble. You can use something like this handy dandy chart and muddle your way through name lists. That said, most of the modern games eliminate the need for even this by adding thumbnail images of robots next to every name in a list.

What's the best all stat upgrades bonus for the Arbalest in SRW J? (Because full weapon upgrade apparently comes with its own bonus.) Do I get free flight if I go with the S on all terrain bonus? I'm kind of on the fence between that and mobility, because it's already ridiculously agile, but I suppose an S rating anywhere would do pretty much the same thing.

Always S ranks. Always and forever.

I just got to the ATX route split stage where I have to protect the MP Huckebeins. I proceeded to spend the next hour or so banging my head against a wall while the Huckebeins went to great pains to suicide themselves on Debudedabide, only to give up and turn the game off for a while.

This is almost as bad as OGG stage 35.

Almost.

Hokuto

Soiled Meat
I got past the "stop MP Huckebeins from suiciding themselves" skill point (the first one apparently??) and got to the "must feed immobile Granteed 5 kills" skill point. This one wasn't really all that bad. If anything, I found it entertaining because the most intuitive way to achieve the skill point is to clump everybody in a death ball and wait for things to come to you, just like in J. :allears:

The trick is to have Confuse/かく乱 up. That gives the planes a ~30-40% chance of dodging the boss's inevitable counterattack. It took a lot of savescumming, but that's how I got through the stage.

Ryoto, despite never having deployed previously and being stuck in the Raubitter, pulled his weight admirably in the early portion of that map. And thanks to a well timed level he was even able to just barely scrape up the SP for a final Focus to save him before my main force arrived. Good work Ryoto, now get your rear end back on the bench.

I had this experience just now on a forced deploy with Ryoto and Ing. Ryoto suddenly got clutch and learned Soul and procced Afterimage with every attack on his Boxer, in addition to gaining so many levels that he could afford a fourth Focus when he ran out of SP from the previous three. Good job. Now get back on the bench.

Anyone mind telling me the best map attacks available in OG Gaiden?

The best ones in OGG are probably Cyflash and Psychoblaster. Cybuster is a good choice in general because of how good it is in OGG. Other acceptable runners-up are the R-3 Powered's Telekinesis Missiles and the Ryukooh's zappy thing. I've never found the Huckebein Gunner's weapons to be that great. For like the three stages that you get the Granzon, its MAP weapon is also amazing.
