Used to have fun cars, but with 2 year old twins we now have: 2011 Toyota Highlander 2008 Scion xD 1998 Triumph Daytona 955 2007 Suzuki S50 1991 Kawasaki EX500 Might sell one of the bikes once we get settled into a new house and get a Jeep Wrangler, Suzuki Samurai/Sidekick or similar. Something 4x4 and removable top.

Cubey posted:It isn't a big deal that they don't make cheap sporty cars really anymore. You can just buy older sports cars for cheap instead, and frankly many of them look a whole lot better than a modern car is even allowed to look due to safety regulations (pop-up headlight for example). They are also typically cheaper and easier to work on yourself. I just want a new reliable car I can pay cash for that will last ten years and/or has high trade-in/resale value and that means a corolla like everyone's grandma Or maybe this Honda we'll see. Hondas tend to get that flakey paint thing after two years though. I mean who am I to "want fun things" i guess

Bought a manual '05 Honda Accord EX in 2007 for $17K with just under 28K mileage. Drove it 200K miles and traded it in in June as a down payment on a minivan for the wife. I'm now driving an '01 Acura RSX with 258K miles and it's automatic. A buddy of mine freaked out when I got the stupid thing and sent me links to all these mods I could do to it. My wife's brother thrashed the poo poo out of the engine street racing it and now it only accelerates well in 1st and 5th gear. The '83 Datsun that I learned to drive on had more pickup.

Older sporty Hondas and Toyotas are still reliable vehicles, and if something does go wrong, there are giant followings that make finding a part very easy and often quite cheap.

There are a lot of people who A: don't know how to work on their own car, B: Don't have time to work on their own car, or C: Don't have space to work on their own car (apartment dwellers). Being able to have a brand new one that should be pretty drat reliable, and if something happens the dealership fixes it and gives you a loaner while they work on it, is worth the extra monthly cost to them. Sometimes us gearheads forget that.

Hence why modern cars all look like pigs. Also throw all three gens of the RX7 on that list of cars that had pop-up headlights and looked great. I had an FB and loved how it looked and loved how it drove even more.

Oh yeah. When I still lived in Colorado, we'd periodically invite friends over to teach them how to do basic stuff like brakes and oil changes, and let them do it in our driveway. So many apartment complexes have "Nope no working on cars in the parking lot" policies these days. I wonder if there's "Shared garage space" somewhere. might be a good business plan.
