How does fusing work and when should I do it?

Can I get some input on my team? This is for Arena. Spike (6*) My first 7k, he does good damage and can freeze. I use him primarily to hit people, often 5 at the same time. Shayne (6*) (32) Also hits people. Hard. Hellenia (5*) I don't see her often, but the AI loves to drop shield early, so I use her as a tank for now. When she uses her shield, she gets Taunt, so I'm able to dish out some early damage. Doesn't protect against AoE damage, though. Karon (5*) Heals everyone else. Mostly heals Hellenia, so my tank is around longer. May (6*) I put her on the team as a temporary fill until I can figure out a better unit. I run into those dumb shields that nullify damage too often. Is there a way to beat those? I feel like I could climb a few ranks if I had a counter for those.
