Until such time as the DOJ says "Private prisons will be outlawed" these companies will survive.

IMO the 30% drop is an knee jerk reaction sell off. And unless states, that also pay for these prisons, follow the example of the feds, they will recover some of their value.

yeah the federal system doesn't even use that many ACTUAL private prisons. the one i was in was the only one on the entire west coast.

now what they do use a lot of are private "transfer centers" which are like quasi-prisons that you stay at after you've been sentenced but are awaiting transport to wherever you are going and private halfway houses. plus the states are the main contractors with private prisons anyway

the only thing that sucks for the inmates is that private prisons have far, far, far superior commissaries than regular prisons tho

most of the private prisons have state contracts though

though it's probably an indication that the state gov'ts will go that way too

california will not be anytime soon as the only way the state manages to stay under the federal court imposed cap on the number of inmates in the state prison system is by sending inmates to out of state contract prisons

my two best friends in prison were both doing 10 years for weed. in each of their cases the feds never even recovered a single physical gram of marijuana, much less the hundreds and hundreds of pounds they charged them with. think about that for a second.

of course there is dumbass but the point is that overly broad conspiracy laws plus insane drug sentences keep beds filled and filled beds are what keep the prison-industrial complex going

they were both importing weed by the hundreds of pounds from british columbia to the US. one distributed it in the Seattle area the other moved it cross country to brooklyn. neither of them were busted with any physical marijuana they were both snitched on and plead guilty to conspiracy. i dont think you guys understand how unbelievably draconian federal drug laws are. i received 2 37 month sentences served concurrently for possession of about 50 grams of heroin.

If you could do it over again wouldn't you really timewarp back to 1950-something, go to Hollywood and use your future knowledge to pass yourself off as the next big director, coat your dick in some sort of poison, then go find Nancy Davis on a studio lot somewhere?

You get to sell the dope for probably less profit, but much reduced or no jail time, and you got the best blowjob ever along the way!

With a time machine conservatism really does work!

i guess i never really thought about it that way
