“Restraint? Why are you so concerned with saving their lives? The whole idea is to kill the bastards. At the end of the war, if there are two Americans and one Russian left alive, we win.” ~Gen. Thomas Power, U.S. Strategic Air Command 1957-1964 MELTWATER (working title) is a two-player board game of tactical starvation and mutually assured destruction at the end of the earth, currently under development by Erin Escobedo, aka me, Gutter Owl! The game is currently in open beta for Rules Version 0.64. This thread pits Sailor Viy (US) against Fat Turkey (USSR). But we're still looking for additional testers for additional threads! Please sign up in this thread if you're interested in playing! Players are expected to have read and understood the rules as currently posted. I'd like this to be as blind a run as possible, so I'll try to refrain from commenting, other than updating the map and piece counts. But if you have a rules question, feel free to post in the thread, or PM me if you want to keep your super secret strategic advantage or the like. And while I'd like to keep the rules version consistent for this playtest, I reserve the right to drop in a hot fix if something is clearly Broke In Half. For this playtest, we're upgrading to the shiny new Version 0.64! 0.64 has one significant rule change: The initial Active and Next cards will be visible during the setup phase. (Also, a bunch of ongoing formatting revision that shouldn't impact the actual rules, but will probably make searching for a particular rule harder and more annoying for a little bit! Hooray!)

Civ H7. I'm gonna be honest, Gutter Owl, on my second playthrough this phase is pretty boring. There doesn't seem to be a lot of strategy to my placement decisions (although maybe if I was better then there would be). I imagine this phase would only take a few minutes in a live game, but over PbP it drags.

Civ J5 I don't think it's a reflection in the game that this starting placement phase is tedious; this game feels built for playing across a table where this phase would be very quick. Any turn by turn game is going to have this issue. Offering a starting position would be a good idea though, especially as it feels like you need to have played the game a few times before you know how best to align pieces. Then when people are comfortable with play, they can explore different starting positions.
