Note: Todd Frazier has a UZR of -4.7 this year compared to Bryant's +3.2 (not to mention Bryant's positive UZR at 1B and all three OF positions)

UZR is bullshit.

Let's compare Todd Frazier and Kris Bryant.

According to UZR, Bryant has been much better, with a total of 3.2 runs saved to Frazier's -4.7.

The more basic Total Zone system also gives Bryant the advantage, with +5 to Frazier's -2.

By Defensive Runs Saved, both players have an exactly average total of 0.

The Hardball Times' RZR says Bryant has been much better at plays in his "zone" - but Frazier has made 3 times as many plays outside of his "zone". The advantages basically cancel each other out.

The Inside Edge system sees Frazier as being significantly better, and it's not close:
code:
             Frazier Bryant
Routine 97.3% 95.3%
Likely 72.7% 50.0%
Even 61.1% 28.6%
Unlikely 11.1% 0.0%
Remote 0.0% 0.0%
And finally, looking at the most important stat, we see that Frazier is sitting at 3rd in the AL with a .975 fielding percentage, while Bryant is scuffling along with a pitiful .947.

So, now that we have all the metrics, we can clearly see who's better, right?

Uh, Justin Upton does this every year. He always has one month where he plays like a hall of famer and you think he's turned the corner.

Let me put it this way: A couple more games like this and he'll be back up to 0 WAR for the season. And this stretch spans as many plate appearances as Madison Bumgarner gets for an entire season, so the stats are just as meaningful.

Because it's Detroit, the guy that people are praying hardest to come up complaining the most about not being called up is a relief pitcher.

He's pretty good though

Sounds like he's not good enough to get easy outs on balls in play. If he was, he would have more innings.

Unrelated, this outfield play to force out Trout is a good illustration of why the Infield Fly Rule exists:

The infield fly rule is to prevent infielders from getting a double play by doing this. Dropping the ball to exchange for a slower baserunner is perfectly legal.

I'll be interested to see how the rotation gets set up from here. Do you go with the guys who give you the best chance to win each game? That would probably mean skipping Matt Boyd against the Braves, but it would also set him up to pitch the wild card game if they get there. Or you could just push everyone back one day, meaning Verlander would pitch on Monday against Cleveland and Fulmer would go Tuesday. But then, wouldn't the Indians be fielding a total scrub lineup? Do you waste Verlander on that game?

Game theory is cool.
