I find it much easier to get into a rythmn with music. I've culled pretty much anything fast from my ride playlist though because that throws off my concentration. The fastest I've ridden has probs been to 'Laura' by Bat For Lashes but anything slow and naff is good for fast times as far as I'm concerned.
