A few months ago I ran across a thread from like 2003 from some old message board and it was a person trying to figure out what song they had in their head. There was no youtube so people really struggled to present their guesses, it was mostly links to midis. It was funny. Life used to be real hard.

As with everything computer related, midi files were deemed too efficient for modern PCs and had to be replaced with something more complicated. If you want to embed some sickass tunes on your homepage now you gotta use HTML5 audio and javascript, like https://galacticmilk.com/midi-js/MIDIPlayer.html

Everyone used to think OPL3 "adlib" midi sounded crap but that old Yamaha synth you used to find on soundblasters in the 90s is actually pretty cool and used in everything from arcade machines to game consoles (sega genesis) You should check out adlib tracker https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p6IITanvS6Y&t=330s

You can really hear him riff out the soul from out of them old .mids. They sound just as good as them old .mids did illicitly pumping out through your dads busted rear end desktop speakers at minimum volume at half past cause for grounding time. Daaamn that's some good midi.

MIDIs are cool and funny too, I see potential in them. Also I'm legit trying to find a sound card mod so music sounds nice in my Dosbox games. Sound Blaster 16 isn't enough.

You could do cool poo poo with MIDI, it was just hard. http://www.vgmusic.com/music/console/sega/genesis/GreenHillZone.mid This version of a Sonic 1 song has clever poo poo like notes manually doubled and delayed to sound like a reverb effect. You almost don't notice how basic most of the sounds are because of the effective layering. Most versions sound like a tuba trying to gently caress an oboe inside of a badly tuned piano while a gated reverb snare drum watches from the corner and masturbates sitting on top of a mound of cheap electric bass guitars.
