![]() First thread for this LP: http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3523354 2007 LP thread: http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=2679383 SIREN (or Forbidden Siren, as it's known in Europe) is a 2003 PS2-exclusive horror game made by Sony Computer Entertainment Japan. I'll let the back of the US case sell you on it: 00:00 Midnight. A siren calls and a sea of red water mysteriously surrounds the mountain village Hanuda. Slowly, a terrible force transforms the inhabitants into shibito, undead husks of their old selves, fueled by evil and hate. Play as ten different characters caught in a living nightmare. You have three days to learn how their paths intersect as they try to stay alive. Survival depends on your ability to sightjack - or the power to see through the eyes of friends and foes. There is no one hero. There is little hope. Will you resist the call of the Siren? This is one of my favorite games ever and I think it hasn't gotten the attention or praise it deserves, but I hope this LP will go some small way toward rectifying that. There's so much it does right, not least in how it takes advantage of the medium to convey its meaning and to tell its story - something that's still all too rare today. ![]() FAKE FAQ What makes SIREN stand out?
What's a "shibito"? The undead. They move and act just like humans, but a bit... off. Most of them are armed - frequently with guns. Many also carry flashlights to search for you. They can never be killed, merely stunned for anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two. What's "sightjacking"? The unique mechanic of the series, all player characters have the power to see and hear through the eyes and ears of others nearby. This ability is the only way to monitor enemy positions, find clues, and plan an escape. Didn't you already LP this? Yes. Back in the carefree days of 2007 when this subforum was still new and quality standards all but didn't exist, my very first LP was of Siren. I still think this game and its direct sequel are the best horror games ever released and easily make my all-time top 10 list in any genre, so I wanted to do it justice with a higher quality presentation than I offered the first time around. So what's going to be different this time? Mainly better video quality, better hosting options, and better update management. I'm still doing a 100% run with subtitled commentary and getting all 100 archives, the same as before. I also have quite a bit more bonus material than I did last time that I plan to integrate into the LP. What about spoilers? Please don't post plot points or mechanics that haven't been shown off in the LP. This applies to the remake, Siren: Blood Curse as well to the extent that it shares features with this game. I've collected a fair amount of outside materials from around the web that I'll be posting along as well, so if you want to post a link to something game-related I'd appreciate it if you PM'ed me first. I want viewers who haven't played Siren and who didn't watch another LP to get a fresh experience. If you're in that camp, speculation is welcome. Why are there so many different videos? Since the timeline is out of order, every stage or cutscene that has a timestamp is getting its own video. That means that a lot of the videos are only a minute or so long, so don't let the volume of them scare you off. Any audience participation? ![]() UPDATE 1 UPDATE 2 UPDATE 3 UPDATE 4 UPDATE 5 UPDATE 6 UPDATE 7 UPDATE 8 UPDATE 9 UPDATE 10 UPDATE 11 UPDATE 12 UPDATE 13 UPDATE 14 UPDATE 15 UPDATE 16 UPDATE 17 UPDATE 18 UPDATE 19 UPDATE 20 UPDATE 21 UPDATE 22 UPDATE 23 UPDATE 24 UPDATE 25 UPDATE 26 UPDATE 27 UPDATE 28 UPDATE 29 UPDATE 30 UPDATE 31 UPDATE 32 UPDATE 33 UPDATE 34 UPDATE 35 UPDATE 36 UPDATE 37 UPDATE 38 UPDATE 39 UPDATE 40 UPDATE 41 UPDATE 42 UPDATE 43 UPDATE 44 UPDATE 45 UPDATE 46 ![]() Most of these are posted as part of the main updates, but here's a handy collection for review. I'm pretty excited to see you start this back up. Thanks to you and your original LP, SIREN has become one of my favorite horror games.

Oh poo poo you're back. Figured you would be gone forever, great to see some more Siren remastered action back since I absolutely cannot play these types of games.
|
![]() |
|
Hells yeah, it's back! I remember watching the original on like, Viddler or something back in the day. I tried to go back to it recently, and man, these last 10 years seem to have done a number on my eyes ![]() (It doesn't help that Siren employs judicious use of grain filters and static, which are murder on even the most sophisticated video codecs, but still... ugh)

Oh man! Awesome to see this back. I followed your first LP of both games, this is kind of nostalgic for me! I picked this up on the PS4 recently and finally completed it after its obtuse difficulty haunted my childhood. What a great game.

Well poo poo, you're back. Guess I'm following 2 SIREN threads.

Yo, that last video on Update 36. Video 081. gently caress that video. Holy poo poo.

Oh my god, I've waited three years to see the end of this.

I did not expect this to come back ![]() I can finally ask now after all these years! Where did the interactive character introduction bits comes from? I don't think I've ever seen those in any other playthrough of SIREN.

I'm glad you're back, Ego. I've been waiting for this day for three years.

So glad this LP is back on. I always wanted to go to a gaming convention dressed like a shibito but I don't know if I'd be recognizable enough. I'm enjoying SuperGreatFriend's LP. He's great at showing how ridiculous horror can be. But a subtitled voiceless LP makes for a good spooky experience.

Hey all, glad the old thread isn't totally forgotten and thanks for the welcome. I realized I have the time and resources now and it seemed a shame to leave it so close to complete, so I'm back to finally finish this thing.ishikabibble posted:I did not expect this to come back Yeah, Night10194 is right. I captured them from a mirror of the EU promotional site they had way back. I decided to do it that way A, in case the backup gets taken down, and B, because there may be some minor spoilers and I wanted to release them at the right point in the LP. flatluigi posted:If people want to compare and contrast, supergreatfriend's also currently doing a SIREN LP: http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3781111 Ha, great timing. I'm glad someone else is finally covering this game after all these years and giving SIREN some more exposure. Moscow Mule posted:So glad this LP is back on. Siren is a game I always loved but never could finish. Like I said in the other thread, the specific challenge in it is something I just couldn't handle. It's great to have this stuff so I can see what I missed.

Oh man I am so happy to see you pick this up again. The 2013 LP gave me something to look forward to during an especially lovely summer and I was sad to see it go. I've gone through your older archived SIREN LPs since, but this game really deserves to be shown off in higher quality with your style of presentation. (I'd love to see the second game revisited too, I think it's even creepier than this one, but if not, no worries- thank you for going through the trouble of translating it and showing it off the first time!)

Has it been three years already? Wow. Really happy to see this back from the dead (heh). I always thought your LPs were outstanding. ![]()

are we supposed to recognize the man in the latest cutscene at this point? the zoom in on his face like its some big reveal makes me feel like i missed something. i cant tell how miyako plays into that scene either, since its not clear where she is, but im guessing thats for later. she wasnt the one being eaten because shes intact 9 hours later, though unknown if shes alive or dead another thing, the cutscene where jun has a rifle and grabs miyako by the arm takes place a full day before he actually shoots kyoya with the rifle. its probably the result of a typo but honestly, wouldn't put it past this game to be even more confusing about its chronology than i thought it could be

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Archive 080 - The Takeuchi Monographs: Sacred Beliefs of Hanuda ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() We have seen other entries written by Tamon's father, Omihito, before. Specifically, Kyoya found one in Karuwari on the first day (Update 20) that discussed the Kajiro family. The cover text actually says: "Takeuchi Monographs: Published in the year 1289 of the Advent of Datatsushi The Sacred Beliefs of Hanuda: The Descent of Datatsushi"

So glad this is back. I wonder what comic book she saw with this solution!

You know, Yoriko's actually pretty resourceful. Also, is it just me or is Kyoya's poker getting bent a little as the game goes on? That thing's been working hard for days.

I think Siren 2 is every bit the equal of this one. It's like the perfect sequel in that it introduces lots of solid new elements and does some light mechanical housekeeping without changing the core of the game or its tone. I'm looking at redoing that LP as well, not just for the better video quality but because there's bonus content to show off like I'm trying to do for this one. The stage select shows it on day two as expected. What a weird typo though. And I'm not sure if you're expected to recognize that person. It's kind of hard to see.

Where do the stories (like here in update 33: http://lpix.org/sslptest/index.php?id=145394) come from? I think a reason I like Siren so much is that it does fake religion a lot better than other video games. The blend of real mythology is nice, especially in the archive for update 28. The creature that is a blend of lion/bull/human/eagle is found in Judaism (the Hayyoth, or Four Living Creatures who bear God's throne). In Christianity they represent the four Gospel-writers: Matthew (the man/angel), Mark (the lion), Luke (the ox/calf) and John (the eagle).

Do you know the name of that organ track Hisako plays, or the more dramatic version that plays right after? I've been trying to find that song played during that cutscene for literal years.
