What is this game?
American McGee's Alice is a "dark reimagining" of the original Alice In Wonderland story, where Alice indirectly causes the firery deaths of her parents and is thrown into Rutlidges Insane Asylum, comatose. Years later she is reunited with her pet stuffed rabbit, causing her to spiral into a nightmare version of Wonderland where she must cut, stab, and burn her way back to sanity.

Who will be playing it?
I will be doing the actual playing, but I am happy to announce that we have our very own grimlock_master and Miz Kriss as co-commentators! They will be alternating sections, so each update will be labeled with their respective names. This will be a much more casual LP compared to my previous ones, far more tangential at least.

How will the updates go?
The plan right now is for one 10-15 minute episode to be put up every weekday.

What's the spoilers policy for this thread?
Since this is less of a plot-heavy story I don't mind people talking about things like weapon pickups, monsters, or symbology, but I ask that major plot points be at least spoiler tagged.

Update! Episode 2: Pepper Spray-based Superpowers

Randabis posted:

Nice start to a classic game. It seems like the video ends abruptly though like you're missing a few minutes at the end.

Also I think the in game volume could be raised a hair, especially during cutscenes.

I will admit that I haven't done collab videos in a while so these first few ones are a bit...rough. I keep missing the timer. All the gameplay is there, I might just have had to edit out the rest of a thought or whatever.

This one has a slight echo to it that I couldn't get out, hopefully it isn't too annoying.

I can see about balancing the game out a bit more, sure. I generally bring it down across the board because it can get incredibly loud at times (rushing water, etc) but I can be more specific with the next set.

Madness Returned is kind of an odd duck. They tried having a lot of symbolism and a real plot, but because they just had to put in more complex combat as well the sections drag on and on, with the story bits somewhat few and far between. So many baby heads...

I really liked the plot of Madness Returns, it just had too much...stuff. Too many high health enemies, too many collectables, etc

DreamShipWrecked
Jan 11, 2013

I certainly don't think Madness Returns is a bad game, it's just over-padded. It's something that would probably be looked at more favorably if this game didn't exist, since this is more tight and creepy.

There were certainly some good sections, and the London parts were really well done imo even if they were just walking sims.

I don't think something like the original could be AA-made anymore without some serious branding i.e. Doom. But who knows?

Fair enough points on the dresses, I mean more that they were a bit more than the base one that we have in this game. They certainly go through measures to make sure that Alice isn't titillating, which for the time is somewhat novel.

The cat really is the best in the game. Apparently the VA has voiced a lot of things, most recently being the teddy bear from Among the Sleep (which is just perfect)

I don't really have any issues with alternative plot interpretations, they can be a lot of fun and lead to some great ideas. They get dumb when there is absolutely nothing to support them, though, and it just turns into people forcing the story into how *they* want it to be (generally involving someone having sex)

Oh I have no doubt that Disney would have never allowed any tarnish to come to their brand, they guard that stuff like a dog and its bone. It would have just made for an interesting game

DreamShipWrecked

The "surprise sex as drama" back story of Madness Returns is a bit hamfisted, but I do like how they presented it in the London scenes. The first time you go through the game you just write off the kids, what they are saying and the signs that they are wearing, because you have your own objectives to complete. But that ended up being the whole point of the story, that Alice (and by extention thr player) was so wrapped up in her issues and her Wonderland that she completely ignored the abuse that was right in front of her, abuse that she could have stopped if she wasn't so self-centered. It made for a clever bit of gameplay-story integration.

These last couple of videos with Miz Kriss talking non-stop about random stuff not related in any way to the game are pretty annoying. If you're going off-topic you could at least shut up for the cutscenes.

I have been cutting out our audio for the more cutscene-cutscenes, like the death of the White Rabbit, but for just the incidental ones I have left it in because they aren't overly interesting and there are captions. I can start cutting things down if people want them more though. It just seemed that folks were enjoying the chatter.

I do like the return to form in terms of standardized, themed enemies. As I touched on a great deal of the baddies in this game are monsters for the sake of monsters and don't have much relevance to the story, aside from the Card Guards and the Chess Pieces. Horror games are best when their monsters actually mean something, which is why the design of Silent Hill, The Suffering, etc. tends to seem more creepy than something like Resident Evil or (the Horror thread's favorite) Year of the Ladybug. The latter still has good design, mind you, it's just that the zombies are more startling and off-putting in the sense of needing to spend resources on killing them than psychologically scary.

Re: Monsters, I certainly agree that the game doesn't really *need* to be symbolic, but it helps. That being said, the themed monsters and areas are absolutely better, the Looking Glass Land is better designed than the tiny world and all of that.

I hate Boojums more due to their knock back than anything. Alice is half a platformer, after all, and the Boojums are the only creatures with a significant knockback. Add to it that it has a large AoE cone and they can fly and they become really annoying. Plus they tend to show up in especially platformy areas.

Alice has some cool animations that I going to show off in the weapons video. She can actually slowly walk as well, in a very prim but sassy way.

I honestly didn't remember that the White Queen lost her head when first recording, I thought that the pawn was just a clever pun. After all, you need a pawn when your queen is captured. So I left it in as a joke. It didn't really add up to anything shocking, since she came back to live minutes later.

I had always assumed that a Pawn could only the promoted to a Queen since that was the common practice in Chess.

Well, you aren't wrong, if you are going to charge it all the way over then you may as well make it something good.

After all, you can't just leave the pawn dead in the water but two queens would absolutely rock people's worlds.

The game you play with jacks is called "jacks". You throw an increasing number of them in the air and have to catch them on the back of your hand. These days you can get plastic ones but you used to use bones. It's actually a bit odd that Alice has the modern style ones in this game, but the bone ones don't really look like viable weapons, so...

Also, it's interesting that the cat advises you to never play alone, because it's actually perfectly safe to do so. You can't hurt yourself with the jacks.

Neither are playing cards, anything is dangerous if you throw it hard enough

I have the feeling that they may have intended it to have friendly fire originally but took it out. It's a similar phrase to the dice ("take care not to play when you're alone, the fiends lack loyalty and their idea of nutrition can be quite disturbing") and Jack In The Box ("Jack's a friend but he has a temper, perhaps best to let him play my himself..."). It might have been cut when too many people were getting swarmed.

When I played jacks as a kid we would bounce the ball and try to pick them up off the ground, maybe it's just different styling
