We are the Invisible Spatula. We are the Grilluminati. We eat before and after dinner. We eat forever. And eventually... eventually we will lead them into the dining room.
I didn't like the Douche vs. Turd Sandwich thing when they did it the first time since John Kerry wasn't really all that douchey/turdy, just criminally boring and unwilling to defend himself against attacks.

The Douche/Turd Sandwich thing applies FAR better to Trump and Hillary. I can't wait to see where this season goes, though. On the other hand, I'm less eager to confront all of the real life bullshit that's going to inspire future plot points.

I'm on the fence on how I feel about continuing serialized seasons. It led to some really great moments last season, but it kind of lost steam near the end and got somewhat convoluted to a point where I don't think any conclusion would have been satisfying. It also means you get an episode like this which served no purpose other than to catch up on the last 10 months and "set the table." That said, I liked that they set up SO many things right off the bat so the season has a clear direction to go.

They are protesting because Eric Cartman wasn't being punished, someone we know to be innocent (for once.) The whole thing was weirdly out of touch where PC Principal acted like his hands were tied unless he knew who Skankhunt was, but all they really need to do is learn how to IP ban.

It was two problems at once: That Skankhunt was trolling, which like you said, could be solved with an IP ban; and them wanting Cartman to be punished because he's the usual culprit, except that he's not, and they had no hard proof that it was him, so of course PC Principal can't punish him. And what if Skankhunt just finds a way around the IP ban?

Maybe it will lead to a plot where the girls try and get even with Cartman, leading to the "Is it right to do bad things just because the target is a bad person? And this time they are innocent" conundrum.

And I'm curious of why Kyle's dad Member Berry wine has lead him to become a troll in an elementary school site. Is he trying to remember the good old days when you could say any stupid poo poo without consequences?

This strikes me as funny and a bit on the nose, because putting it this way actually makes GD/TS a lot more apt in my eyes. It makes me feel old, but Howard Dean vs. John Kerry in the primaries was basically the beta test of Bernie v. Hillary. On that side of the fence, there was a progressive/socialist type from Vermont who got kids incredibly excited, and [insert words here about how he lost, by whose hands and why] and we ended up with an absurdly wealthy and entitled Turd Sandwich in both cases.

Meanwhile, Dubs and Trump have proven public records of being Giant Douches.

Huh.

No matter how you look at it, it's basically an objective fact that these are the two least-liked candidates in history, so there's no better time for the GDvTS metaphor.

And even in-universe, it's a metaphor this time around. The candidates are actual people. But the people of South Park perceive them as Douche & Turd. Yet they're still very passionate about defending the Douche or the Turd because it's all they have.

Yeah before this episode I was thinking they really wrote themselves into a corner, since douche vs turd seems a lot more apt this time around, so it was fun to see them say gently caress it and just bring it back without the metaphor this time. Plus of course they'd have to do something like have Randy complain about everything getting a reboot before launching into the bit.

How would that work at all? If the show starts talking about politics, nobody actually derails anything. The only way to enforce this would be to straight up ignore all political plotlines, or by banning the creators, I guess. On second thought, that seems reasonable.
