Entropic posted:A few notes on templating: Kabanaw posted:An important rule in designing cards is making sure that players don't have to remember that something exists without there being a visible reminder somewhere in the game. The reason cards like Obsidian Fireheart or Xathrid Gorgon put counters on things they change is so that a player can look at that card and remember "Oh, this has a petrification counter on it, it's an artifact creature with defender." It reduces the number of play mistakes overall and lets the players focus on their strategy and the game itself instead of wasting headspace remembering extra gamestate information. girl dick energy fucked around with this message at 20:05 on Jun 6, 2020 |

And now, the first week's theme! RoboRosewater Debugger! RoboRosewater gets some pretty decent card designs sometimes! It's in the same position we are where the cards will never get published anyways, so why not work together? Create a card that is a 'fixed' version of a RoboRosewater card. Make sure to link to the original card you're basing yours off of. Rules

Prophetic Firespank is already kind of an interesting card. The commenters who say it basically has Cycling 0 and lets you play with a 56-card deck are crazy; if you consider it equivalent to Cycling 0 then you have to consider Swamp equivalent to Mox Jet. But it works with Urborg, with enchant land auras that grant new tap abilities, with Awaken spells, and with effects that let you get good value out of sacrificing a land. If you took away the etb tapped condition it could be Johnny bait in the right format. I wanted to give the card a bit more general use, so it won't be totally blank if you don't draw it with a combo piece. It has a lot of drawbacks, but I think it needs them considering it draws you a full card, and it still has all the combo potential that the original Prophetic Firespank had. My other card today is COUNTER HORSE

Some thoughts on cards, because that is a thing that judges do sometimes: Draconic Tribute - I'm not actually sure about the power level of this card? On one hand, giving yourself a five-turn clock is rough, but on the other hand, even in Modern, there's plenty of very scary dragons that don't need five turns to kill you. I think the card might be better served by being just a little more Johnny. Ephemeral Vale - The effect is fine, but the flavor feels both generic an indistinct. The effect is solid, and is a nice smoothing out of what was already a pretty solid RoboRo card, but the image is a mountain? When the effect is green/white? You try to cover it with the flavor text, but that just muddies things even more (and 6+ lines is always ugly with flavor text). Especially since Vale means "valley". Solid mechanically, needs a flavor rework. Darkcrawler - What Barry was implying is that your card is actually more messy and complicated than the card you're basing it off of, and I think I have to agree. Where is the -1/-1 counters thing coming from? There's a lot of directions to take Darkcrawler, and I feel like you skipped over a lot of them. You might want to look at how the Leylines work and go from there. The 1: Untap ability may bear some fruit, too, and it'd let you get away with it being a little stronger. Maybe something like Darkcrawler, 2W, Creature - Hound, 2/2, If ~ is in your opening hand, you may begin the game with it on the battlefield tapped. ~ does not untap during its controller's untap step. (W): Untap ~. That's probably too many lines and a little messy, but you get the idea. Bring it back closer to the original, and you'll have something promising. Curse of Endless Resurrection - I really like this. The Ninjutsu thing reminds me of the "pervert the mechanics" challenge from the last thread in a pleasant way, and it otherwise not having a mana cost makes it a very interesting Johnny card. I don't care much for the presentation, though, since as fun as old movie references are, I feel like it undermines the very fascinating mechanical flavor that's already in the mechanics. Great Vineheart - I think you overcomplicated a card that might have already been fine with just a flavor change. It's going to be horrifying in Legacy either way, you might as well embrace it. Bargain Dustbowl - You're right about Prophetic Firespank, but I'm not sure if this is the best direction to take it? I dunno, it feels... messier than it has to be. Hydratic Horse - When I saw the first line, I oohed. When I saw the second line, I ahhed. And when I saw the third line, I quite literally laughed aloud. I think it's becoming pretty apparent that I love Johnny stuff, and this is a fun direction to take the card. Loving all the turnout so far! Barry Shitpeas posted:My take on it is a completely different card, but combos with a lot of the same things: Ooh, I love this. This is a way better approach to the Firespank's "empty land" ideal. The main issue is that it would be pretty ridiculous with bouncelands, but I can't think of any implementation of Prophetic Firespank for which that wouldn't be true. Despite having the modern computer art, Sink Burdy is quite a mess. But I think there's an interesting idea buried in there. Simic Fodder: At first I didn't like the "separate creature" clause because I felt like it limited some really great Johnny potential. Then I realized it was Common, and saw what you did. This is a card designed for Limited play, isn't it? Festerpit: I could actually see this getting printed. You worked off the template of the old card really well, but I wish there was a way that you could have tied the name into it somehow. Fertile Farmland: Once again, my Johnny is screaming. I think I like this better than the Draw A Card versions. My first thought for how to exploit it was actually Blood Moon, because that would be kind of amazing. Ironarn Duelist: Unexciting, but a nicely done Tim with a gimmick. Sink Burdy: girl dick energy fucked around with this message at 12:13 on Sep 14, 2016 |

The 2% shouldn't be radically better than the 98%, and the collectible format making almost all the cards you own complete useless garbage annoys me no end. I actually wanted to give that thing a Simic feel, so that when it died, every creature you had got an evolve like effect as you shuffled the creatures in your graveyard away. I couldn't find a way to word that without taking up twenty lines, so I wound up just handing out +1/+1 counters and calling it a day. As long as I'm trying to make new effects, here's a fresher, hotter take on Spoorhimig Molillists.

Duor Sordic is mostly gibberish. But there's the seed of a reasonable design... The mana-creation ability works the way it does to minimize memory issues, though it does introduce some rules funkiness in other places. For example, I believe that if you use it to cast a Firespout it won't do anything.

I've updated Sink Burdy in my previous post to have Flying as intended (and quote marks around the ability it grants which is probably better templating). Today I'd like to talk about Creatures with flying. But first, you should know that Racka Rornoshy enters the battlefield. The first one uh was a high-concept idea that sorta got away from me but that I liked too much to throw away. The second one is a land that insists on entering the battlefield. It's kinda like Firespank in the sense of being a useless land, but geared toward "sacrifice a land" effects. (Roborosewater also had a couple lands that enter with +1/+1 counters that I wanted to use as "ANIMATE ME" fodder but there's only so many useless lands I can make in a single contest.) (e: For some reason MSE really doesn't want to kern Control Gravity correctly. Sorry about the haveflying.) Mystic Mongol posted:I hate hate hate that cards are designed for limited play. Creatures should be good! Oh this is nice. I like how it can work multiple times, and will resurrect if other creatures die at the same time it does. The original version I think felt more Golgari than Simic, but I love this rewrite. https://twitter.com/RoboRosewater/status/765260806413955072?lang=en That's an odd selection of powers, but they're not particularly balanced with one another. So I tried to tie them to the Aura ability in the last power. And since the creature revolves around enchantments, then that makes it an enchantress. The last one's mana costs would probably be more correct if the blue drew cards, the red did damage and the green made the wolf.

This one just needed a push to be a positive investment of resources. A repeatable Dark Rit is very exploitable so I hope the cost balances it out. Islatsosce Merpents... just, Islatsosce Merpents.

That's a very weak Lake of the Dead and a plausible but expensive Psychogenic Probe. Think about Cabal Coffers and Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx: 3 is the break even point if you're paying 2 and tapping a land to get mana. As it stands that's some nasty card disadvantage and no upside over just running a basic swamp. AJ_Impy fucked around with this message at 00:23 on Sep 17, 2016 |

Grap wants you to put a +1/+1 counter on it, and also wants each opponent to put a +1/+1 counter on it. Designed for inclusion in one of those Commander precons. Zephirum posted:
Considering that it still only nets you 1 mana even if you sacrifice two things, I'd say it still needs a push. As it stands, why not just play Swamp?

Based on Stramperic Despalen EDIT: You'e right, I was comparing it to Reap the Seagraf, and that doesn't require a sacrifice. Equip cost dropped to 2. Torchlighter fucked around with this message at 03:03 on Sep 18, 2016 |

More card opinion times! Rullor Dav: If there's a particular award for artistry in "make sense of an 'old computer' card". this might get it. How you interpreted Totalwolk is brilliant and I wish that ability existed on a real card. I know you were sticking as close to the card as possible, but I think it might work better as a 2/1, though. As a 1/1, the ability is basically useless on its own without a buff of some kind. Carcass Crab: I'd actually say this feels a lot more Golgari than Simic, between the graveyard love and the auto-death, and even the name. Still very interesting design, and I could see the GB version winning a different contest (so hold onto it), but it feels a bit too much like a departure from the original. Bloodcaster Savant: Can definitely tell what you were going for, but I think the 'colorless that can be spent like any type' is a little overcomplicated, and relies too much on player memory. Control Gravity: Interesting idea, but I'm not really seeing at all where this comes from the linked card, and that's saying something, considering how little there is to go on. Some kind of intentionally pie-bending Gruul flight card might have been a better way to go with this. Racka Rornoshy: Oh, hey, a card that kept the random name, and made it work! I like this, another fun land that opens up all that delicious Crucible of Worlds nonsense without having to pay (3) or Temur Enchantress: I like where you went with this, but you could easily get away with changing the color costs to be more in line with color identity. Green on the tokens and black on the life loss (or red for damage), maybe? It's a great idea for a card, but the color weirdness puts it on shaky ground. Vampiric Cavern: Yeah, as others have said, that ability is very overcosted for what it does. Though you could reduce it to B, sacrifice a creature and ~: Add BBB to your mana pool. Then it's a Dark Ritual callback. Mindblast Orb: You were kind of painted into a corner here, since Merpents is already pretty similar to Psychogenic. Letting it target creatures or players (and probably deal Shock damage, instead of Bolt) might refresh it, but it's still stuck being in a niche that already exists. Bacchin: I realize it's only Black because it's supposed to be a Commander, but I'm still not sure how that plays into the color identity at all. Soul Devourer: 3 for "sacrifice a creature, put a 2/2 zombie token into play" feels pretty overcosted. 2 is enough to make it a slightly better Prowler's Helm, which isn't a bad thing considering Prowler's is strictly mediocre while Whispersilk exists. Also, I love the Johnny potential of this card, and spent a little while trying to figure out how to make an infinite with Brass Squire. (For the record, best I found was Soul Devourer + Brass Squire + Intruder Alarm + Life and Limb = Infinite Mana) But I'm sure there's better ways to make it work. Short version: It's neat, I like it, feels overcosted. girl dick energy fucked around with this message at 20:44 on Sep 17, 2016 |

The Carcass Crab's a D&D monster from a few years back. It's not undead, but rather a genetically created creature who's natural habitat is battlefields in the mournlands where it camouflages itself by impaling corpses on its spiny shell. I liked the flavor of this thing crawling out of the graveyard/pile of corpses instead of appearing as other creatures do through summoning, but it doesn't really come across to people unfamiliar with the original critter. But hey, you don't like my high concept necrophiliac crab, that's OK. How about some Alpha artifact nonsense? It's balanced because it's rare! https://twitter.com/RoboRosewater/status/745032604798189568?lang=en

Some kind of intentionally pie-bending Gruul flight card might have been a better way to go with this. My thought process for Control Gravity was something like "Creatures with flying" --> "All creatures have flying" --> how do I make this matter --> give a bonus to creatures with flying --> if all creatures have flying then how does that matter --> what if you could toggle it between flying and non-flying. I put it in white because it's symmetrical and feels kinda like a white or blue control-stuff type of thing, but thinking about it I actually really like the idea of leaving it in Gruul. It's fine for green to get flying if it only does so by making flying irrelevant, and since green and red are the colors with removal that only works on flying and non-flying creatures (respectively), that's where the toggle is most interesting. I've edited the original post so it's RG now. For Bacchin, the original card was Sultai and I wanted to stay close to those colors. I was thinking of it less as "white and black and green" and more as "KTK-era Azban", which had the "slivers for +1/+1 counters" subtheme that would give you extra value from Bacchin spreading counters to all your creatures. The way it tempts your opponent with an offer that benefits you as well felt kinda "deal with the devil"-ish to me, particularly in the context of a multiplayer format where if three opponents accept your offer then there's a tragedy of the commons effect where you end up getting three times as much benefit as any one of them does. It could have worked fine as just GW though. Anyhow, for today's entry, each opponent loses control:

Compare how much player memory you'd need for an "add that much mana in any combination of colors" version. First you'd have to actually make a choice of something like "3 blue, 1 red", then you'd have to note it all down, then you'd have to keep track of which of it you're spending and how much of each... With the current version, you can just put a die out and go "okay, that means I have 4 Omnimana". EDIT: And here's another card. This one is based off of Ovunders. I thought that was worth requiring the extra effort, and makes the card play better by incentivizing your opponent to tap out once it becomes that manner of threat, but an ignorable steady source of damage unboosted.
