The timing doesn't work for this to spend the mana on a creature and give it haste, right? That's a shame.

Instead of giving the equipped creature a tap ability, you could make the card itself have the ability "Tap equipped creature: Create a colorless artifact token..." It should be legal Magic, although possibly against official Wizards style.
