The path of the apostle begins here. You have chosen, or have been chosen, to make a journey to the west, where, if you survive, your patron will receive a wish and they will reward your for your service. The reward is great, but the journey is harrowing: many perish along the way, only to be replaced by other followers of their patron. This is not a simple task; there may only be a few apostles at a time. To install their own apostle mid-journey, a patron must orchestrate the death of a living apostle and take their mantle.

For now, though, you have only the road ahead.

---

Mechanics

For those of you who remember Dogkisser's Tower Game, this is similar in premise. A group of five people will travel a great distance to gain a wish, and many will die along the way. However, there are some differences here:

First, enemies will mostly be controlled by posters who don't have an active apostle. These enemies are servants of whatever patron the poster chooses. If you kill an apostle, you may replace that apostle with your own apostle of the patron you were serving.

Second, there will only be one group at a time, though I think the whole "inactive posters control enemies" thing will keep people without apostles involved.

So, with that out of the way, here are the mechanics:

For most actions, you'll roll a d20 and add your accuracy rating and +3 if you're using a relevant skill. If you're using your talent, you'll roll a d4. 1 is a failure, 2 or 3 means you reroll, and 4 is a success. After using a talent (regardless of success), you must wait 4 turns for it to recharge.

Players take turns simultaneously; I'll post the result once everyone's posted their turn, or too much time has passed.

If there are monsters available for people to control, just post an action along with the monster you're acting as. This is first-come first-served. If I'm posting the result of a turn and there are untaken monster slots, I'll post as if they're unaligned shadow demons or something.

If an apostle dies due to a patron-aligned monster, the person controlling that monster can replace them, or nominate someone else to replace them. If an apostle dies to something other than that, I'll usually replace them with the first person to post that they want to play. You can't control more than one apostle at a time, though.

---

Character Creation

Patron

This is the entity you're journeying for. It may be a single divine entity, it may be a group of supernatural entities, it could be your rich uncle Bob. The only requirement is that your patron is somehow able to command forces to attack, harass, and otherwise waylay apostles on the journey.

Patrons can (and are meant to, but it's not required) persist across characters, and posters can share patrons if they want to. You should probably ask before using someone else's, though.

Name:
Description: A summary of what this patron is about. May include why they want someone to go on the journey.
Reward: What they'll give an apostle who completes the journey; can be anything since the game will end once that happens.

Apostle

The person who's actually going on the journey. I'm using person very loosely here; any sapient entity could be an apostle. For example, somebody played a talking dog in a similar game a while ago, and that would be fine here.

Name:
Patron:
Description:

HP: 20/25
Armor: 10
Accuracy: +1

Skills: Five things that you're good at. You'll get a +1 bonus to rolls that involve any of these. Examples include acrobatics, fisticuffs, knitting, and golf.
Talent: I'm taking this straight from Tower Game. This is something that only this character can do, and it can be anything as long as it isn't overpowered. A good example would be "Can move anything to or away from this character at any distance." A bad example would be "Draw a Magic: The Gathering card. You may play this card under standard M:tG rules, and other characters are valid targets of card effects." It's too complicated and is secretly incredibly overpowered.

AI Action: I'd like to keep the game moving along, so if you take an unreasonable amount of time to post I'm going to take your turn for you. Use this space to give me an idea of what to do if I have to do that.

Creature

Some sort of minion of your chosen patron. Can be anything from sentient furniture to an angry construction worker, but keep it relatively weak for now. You'll get the chance to make more later. This is what you'll be playing as if your character dies and you want to keep going with the same patron. Those of you who are sharing patrons can make your own monsters if you want, but you should probably talk to the person who made the patron about it.

Patron
[Name] Regent Dorakel of the Weklin Polyregency
[Description] Historically - biologically - the Weklin were a social race. Much like a swarm of bees, their Queen would birth scores of them, assigning her children a caste and a duty. It was so for hundreds or thousands of years - but no longer. Civilization has come to the Weklin, and much of the stifling social stratification has been swept away. The Queens remain, birthing the Weklin people, but they no longer rule; instead, the Regents hold sway over the scattered peoples, striving for balance. Well, most of them. Regent Dorakel has grown gluttonous and greedy for the power of the wish, and has offered a priceless boon to whoever can get it for her. The price of betrayal is commensurately high, however...
[Reward] A boon - Money, status, or a pardon. Or perhaps something stranger?
Apostle
    [Name] “Longspan” Taroket
[Patron] Regent Dorakel of the Weklin Polyregency
[Description] To put it bluntly, Taroket is a criminal. A thug, a conman, and a thief. It was the last one that saw him caught and Walled Up - but it was his escape that caught the Regent’s attention. Deadly with his knives or anything he can get his hands on, Taroket isn’t at all concerned about his chances out west. No need - either he’ll succeed wildly or he’ll die violently. Either one is better than starving to death inside a walled-off brood cell.
    [Skills]
Improvisation - Taroket is an expert at making the best of a bad situation.
Gliding - His stubby winglets aren’t just for show.
Intimidation - Even at four feet tall, he’s a nasty character.
Targeting - Taroket has a keen sense for weak points - and the skill to apply his knowledge.
Drinking - Weklin are traditionally lightweight drinkers. Taroket is an exception.
[Talent] Bullseye - Taroket can hit anything he can see with anything he can hold in his hands.
[AI Action] Get ahead - no matter what it takes. Play along, if necessary.
Creature
    [Name] Cacula Weklin
[Patron] Regent Dorakel of the Weklin Polyregency
[Description] Cacula are among the lowest and simplest of the Weklin. Stunted and warped by their hormones serum, they are no smarter than the average dog - but they are fast, and they are vicious.

Made a mistake with the story: you don't get the wish, your patron does and they, in turn, reward you for it. Doesn't affect character generation, though. Also, there are only two slots left for the initial group of apostles! Remember, even if you don't get into the initial group, you can still kill someone as a monster and send in your own apostle.

I lied, here's the update.

---

You gather at the traditional starting point for the journey. No one is here to great you but the other apostles; it's bad luck to say goodbye to those doomed to die. That's not to say that your deaths are certain, though. Most people just like to keep cautious about how they risk their fortunes.

First to arrive is a mundane farmer, a man with idealistic goals. Next, one of the elite of the world, an academic seeking arcane knowledge. An average-looking man steps out of the bushes, clearly confused but willing to join the party. As if to counter his predecessor's unassuming nature, an armored beast of a man strides toward the group. Finally, and almost without anyone noticing, a small creature arrives, tugging a cart behind her. The air between your group and the path ahead shimmers, then seems to dissipate. The road is clear. You begin your journey.

Music

People like to tell stories about the journey. Not many know for sure whether any are true or not, but the truth of a legend isn't in whether it actually happened, and that truth seems to inch closer with every step. An early morning fog covers the world, muffling your footsteps and making the noises of the forest seem surreal. Shifting leaves begin to sound like gentle waves; cracking sticks sound like crackling fire. The sounds weigh heavily on you, and you feel your hands stray toward your weapons.

A tower appears from the fog, almost sudden enough to startle you. A faint light glows from the top. Your group, agreeing that strange, possibly magical towers appearing on dangerous roads are an unnecessary risk, attempt to forge on. You soon become lost in the fog, however, and find yourself at the base of the tower again. Strange noises sound from the edge of the clearing, growing closer. Shadowy figures approach, menacing from the mist.

---

People will be able to play as creatures here! Post an action as a creature (either a creature that's already been posted or one that you make up) and I'll use those in the next update. People who are already playing apostles can't take a monster turn, but anyone else can. If you successfully kill an apostle, you can submit your own apostle to take their place or nominate someone else. Note that creatures serving one patron can attack their patron's apostle, but that's a dick move so try not to do it without a good reason.

Alright, just to clarify, talents are an active effect, so don't expect this to apply to the cooking roll. I don't know if that was actually the intention, it was just something that could have been a problem if it was. If you're just cooking mundane but good noodles, ignore this. :v:

I had some questions about talents tbh, do we use them instead of rolling for a skill? How powerful should they be?

Seeing some other talents mine is kinda boring and vague , would you graciously allow me to switch it to : "every time an ally rolls a 1 or 20, use your talent and replace your roll with a 1 or 20 if you fail or succeed respectively." which would be better in line with the theme of wild rng shenanigans and swings.

If we're doing this along the same lines of Lord of the Tower, talents take an action to use, like skills. "Be really lucky" still can be a pretty good talent though, as you can spin that in to lucky doing almost anything on talent success.

Description: A tall, well-build Farmer, Petrov is a Hero of Redonia, awarded his title for his unceasing fight against the tyrannous oppressors who keep the peasants of the world hostage. Now he faces his greatest challenge yet, to free the world from servitude. A skilled pitchfork fighter who is an expert in horticulture and oddly enough, reciting poetry.
HP: 20/25
Armor: 10
Accuracy: +1
Skills: Rabble-rousing, Fighting, Horticulture, Climbing, Poetry.
Talent: Petrov's words can rouse the unseen peasantry of the world to aid him. With this talent, a peasant or small group of peasants will be roused to step out of hiding and aid Petrov in any manner they can, to the point they'll give their lives for him and the Cause.
AI Action: Punch Lords and Merchants in the face and march on.

This group didn't fit well with Petrov: He was travelling with one of the oppressors himself, and others sympathetic to their causes. However he had more important things on his mind so far, and the mystic bond between apostles should keep him safe for now. When the reached the tower for a second time, Petrov began to climb, hoping for a better view at the top to help them find their way.

A word on talents and how they functioned in Lord of the Tower. They were basically a tool to get near total narrative control over your action to shape the environment, and the GM very rarely rebuffed them. The only time I can remember that happening was when a player tried to use one to instantly win on a tower floor where the players were divided to two teams and all the players on the losing team would die. Other than that, they could accomplish almost anything. For example, a character whose talent was to rescue anyone from any situation used it to rescue another character from the past where they had been shot by a giant laser that gave them really nasty permanent debuffs to heal said character from said debuffs. Now granted, he had some narrative help from a character with a chronomancy skill, but this still underlines that talents were basically a catch all 'solve a narrative problem you face' kind of thing. As for power, the players were once threatened by the Moon falling on them so one player used a talent to destroy the Moon.

Things they cannot do: Give you an overtly powerful permanent mechanical benefit (you still can find fairly powerful stuff tho, just not overtly so). Also, straight up instakilling other characters with them was always frowned upon. Even the 'destroy anything' talent guy made a disclaimer that it does not work on other players. The only time I can recall that happening was when a character was hit by another character who had an item that instakilled on nat 20, but used their talent that caused 'any action to fail and backfire flagrantly' on the attacker, which caused the attacker to die instead by basically falling on their own sword (and yes, Talents beat critical hits which themselves are also very powerful, and this is something to keep in mind. Only very rare One Use Artifact items could overpower them in Towergame).

It's not trying to use the talent. I just have no reason to be alarmed yet so I'm setting up camp. Also the shadows might not be menacing or maybe they are just hungry? I can activate the talent if they are hostile and it sees like they're gonna ruin us. Everything is kinda ambiguous for the minute.

Cool, just making sure I was clear enough in the OP.

That'd be fine, but remember that talents take four turns to recharge, during which you can't use them. You do use them instead of doing whatever else you might do in a turn; you usually only roll one die per turn. (Unless, of course, something says otherwise. Nothing has said otherwise so far.) And, yeah, the upper limit on talent power is pretty high, but feel free to take a weak power if you want. :v: As Theantero said, some basic guidelines are that they shouldn't instakill apostles and they shouldn't give you a powerful, permanent mechanical benefit every time you use it.

I've probably left out a lot of things from the rules just because I remember how Lord of the Tower worked and don't notice that I'm not explaining something. If anything else needs clarifying, please ask.

Also, now that I think about it, that talent might end up being relatively weak since a talent is usually more powerful than a regular crit. Maybe a faster recharge time could be arranged? 2 or 3 turns instead of 4? Especially since there's a malus for failing the roll other than wasting a talent roll. Actually, your current talent seems fine, and a success might be a little more powerful than a regular talent success because of the risk of unluck.

I barely remember that, and I'm pretty sure I was the guy doing the rescuing. :v:

Oh, also, looks like all the apostles have posted. I'll ask the IRC channel if anyone wants to take a monster turn and I'll start writing the post if there are no takers.

Update

Redcap (Swedish Thaumocracy)

A redcap sets a fog trap, luring apostles to a dirt nap. Who will feel the nettle's bite? Surely one away from the fight.

Bob

The shadows… might not be attempting to kill you? Bob scrutinizes the figures and learns that, yes, they are probably going to try to kill you. Bob also learns, through his years of experience with guitar, that one of them really wanted to be a musician, but his parents forced him to go into the family business. How simply knowing how to play guitar led to this insight is a mystery lost to the ages.

Comrade Petrov

Amidst these elites, the pragmatism of the worker is a rarity. Petrov, however, knows his goal and how to reach it. He begins climbing the tower, but makes little progress. Petrov is used to slow starts: the struggle of the proletariat has been one of slow, arduous steps.

Daniel

Other people can deal with the monsters; Daniel is the only one who can find out how this fog works. Well, he will figure it out. Eventually. He doesn't make a lot of progress on the problem, but his preliminary findings suggest that the fog might not simply return them to the other side of the clearing, but might instead work by some other mechanism. He'll have to run more tests to be sure. He starts on those, but is interrupted by a pain in his leg. He looks down to see small rivulets of blood, mixed with some greenish liquid. He feels dizzy for a few moments, but is able to regain his composure. He does, however, take 3 damage. The sound of laughter comes from some indeterminate place; likely a redcap. Daniel has a lot of less than pleasant memories of them from some core classes he took as a freshman in the academy.

Rostram, the Boar of Stasha

Rostram, a man who's fallen from the height of glory to what some may consider the worst job possible, tries to see things optimistically. Despite being falsely imprisoned, he is proud of his homeland, and would love to see it prosper because of his success. He decides that dying on the battlefield in Stasha's service would be better than starving in a dungeon, and his mood brightens when the wizard calls on him to do one of the things he does best. With his usual boisterousness he strides over and readies his shield. That is to say, he attempts to ready his shield. It seems to be stuck on something, and he can't free it. drat it, of course his journey begins with failure! Cursing, he struggles with his shield, oblivious to other dangers.

Cacula Weklin (Dogkisser)

A strange, bird-like creature flies to a perch in a tree, watching for a chance to strike. It didn't really get enough for breakfast and it's still thinking about food, but one of the apostles presents an incredibly easy target. The avian creature swoops down and lands on Rostram's chest, pecking at his helmet and generally giving him a bad time. Rostram takes 5 damage.

Mittens

Mittens, ever generous, begins cooking a hearty noodle meal for all. As she cooks, a savory aroma drifts around her cart, distracting any would-be assailants. It's not quite her best work, but it is pretty good, and she soon has a customer: a local farmer who came to aid Petrov, but who's just not feeling up to it right now. She talks to him as he eats his noodles and learns that he really just wanted to be a musician. She's had a lot of customers tell her their regrets, and tales of wasted opportunity are common.

Generic Enemies

Many would love to be granted a wish, but, as there can only be five apostles, many don't get the chance to. These would-be patrons send their own forces to attempt to kill and replace apostles, and these forces are attacking you right now. A monstrous dog tackles Bob, knocking him to the ground and dealing 2 damage. A gooey creature slithers its way up the tower to Petrov, attempting to knock him off of it. It fails, but it does give him some acid burns. Petrov takes 2 damage.

"Cursed be the perfidious fae", Daniel muttered under his breath as he nursed his injured leg.

Hmph.

Tried to outsmart him, did it now? Well, he was not quite so easy to best. With a wave of his compass and a whispered incantation, the air around Daniel flickered ever so slightly for a second before dissipating. The translocatory barrier around him would certainly give any monster foolish enough to try and attack him a taste of their own medicine.

Ok but then I guess you already deduce it when you give us damage values? I was confused because they seemed so low compared to our armor.

Description: The Nameless One is about two things: nature (both animate and inanimate), and the total destruction of mankind and all other 'higher' lifeforms.
Reward: Nature knows no desires but sunlight, water and nutrients. All of these will be abundant once the 'higher' races are no more.

I'm unclear on one thing, if I wish to join with a new patron should I also make a new monster to attack somebody that turn? I'm guessing if there aren't free slots I will just be ignored?

I'd assume you can make a new Patron, an Apostle and a Monster even if you are not playing anything. Your apostle won't have a chance to get into the game before somebody dies to make room though, so you're stuck with monster actions until then. Even if you don't make a monster action yourself, your monster might be used as a part of the 'Generic Enemies' that the GM rolls for.

There are no 'slots' for monsters to fill (or for Patrons for that matter, only active Apostles are limited at five), there are as many of them as there are people bothering to roll for them, plus whatever the GM decides to add to that.
