Back in the first releases, Shadow Armor was considered one of the endgame armors because its set bonus focused on melee attack speed I think (it's been a long time). I loved using it for the after-images effect though. The surface jungle also didn't exist in the earliest versions. It wasn't until 1.0.4 or so that it was made. Before that, you had to just stumble upon it while mining, with the vague knowledge that the jungle and the dungeon spawned on opposite sides of the world. What I'm saying is that anyone who started playing this game more recently has it easy compared to early adopters.

Not to spoil anything, but that corruption placement flanking the jungle is gonna lead to some seriously annoying complications, assuming you like a certain tier of gear. Will you be making a farm, or at least going over how you'd make one?

When the spread of evil starts to become a problem, the jungle will create its own defenses that can actually reverse the spread. Although to answer your question, yes I will be setting up various farms at different points. If I'm not mistaken, next time we're going to set up probably the most useful type of farm someone can make.

#16 - Welcome to the Jungle You know, harvesting these plants is kind of tedious. We have to individually "mine" each plant with our pickaxe, and when we do, we only get one seed back. So we can never expand our farm like this. There is a better way, but it requires us to delve into the jungle. But before we do that, there's a second type of farm I want to set up first. So let's return to the underground. A salamander enemy drops us a depth meter. With this we can see just how far underground we are. We don't even need to have it equipped! This is also 1/13 of a much more complex item, and one that I intend to get. Bingo! The blue seed is called mushroom grass seeds. With just one of these, we can grow our own mushroom biome. This is what we ventured underground for, but while we're here, why not explore some more? I don't believe I've shown this off yet. This is a granite biome, and its enemies are kind of annoying to fight. Like the marble biome enemies, granite enemies will spawn for about half a screen around their respective biomes. So often the first time you realize you're near one is when you're being harassed by a golem or an elemental. While exploring a marble biome, we find this fellow tied to a stalagmite. This is the goblin NPC, and we qualified for him once we beat the goblin army. While we could buy cool stuff from him right now, our inventory is full. So we'll wait until he moves into our base. The reforge option lets us reroll the modifiers on our items for a price. Usually it's pretty expensive, with the most powerful weapons in the game taking somewhere north of 1 platinum coin per reforge. Platinum coins, by the way, are the fourth type of coin, and require 100 gold coins to create. Back on the surface, we're going to build a small room over to the left of our base. We're placing mud in the air above us, as the mushroom grass seeds need mud to create grass. We're gonna go with three rows of mud, with mushroom grass seeded into each row. The grass will slowly spread across the mud and mushrooms will grow automatically over time. The reason we're doing this, is that a glowing mushroom farm is incredibly important to have. This is the reason why. If we stand at our workbench-with-a-bottle-on-top, we can brew potions. So if we take a stack of the ever present lesser healing potions, and stuff glowing mushrooms inside, we can double their effectiveness. For what it's worth, you can stuff a regular mushroom and a gel into a bottle to create lesser healing potions. Regular mushrooms, I should add, are fairly hard to farm. You can set up a farm similar to what we have for glowing mushrooms, but you have to regularly go through and clear out the grass and ambient plants that sprout up instead of mushrooms. Six more rooms added to the house. I know four of them are boring square rooms, but this should be enough rooms to last us the rest of the first half. My recording of the play session ended after that last screenshot, and this next one picks up 45 minutes later. In that time apparently the goblin NPC moved in, and I bought some stuff from him. This is going to be kind of a running theme for a while now, where stuff keeps happening and I'm not recording at the time. As annoying as it is to read "this cool thing happened off camera," imagine how teeth-grindingly frustrating it is to realize that you forgot to record it. We purchased these from him off camera. These boots let us fly for a few seconds. We also placed this down in his room. This furniture object lets us combine accessories. We have already done so with the rocket boots and those dash boots I've been wearing for a while now. So now we can run fast and fly as well! In fact, there's several other accessories we could combine right now, though I don't think I do so for a while. The NPC also sells... Ruler - 1 gold coin - (Overlays a grid on the screen, which helps immensely with building) Grappling hook - 2 gold coins - (In case you're INCREDIBLY unlucky) Toolbelt - 10 gold coins - (Increases block placement range. Part of a larger accessory) Spiky ball - 80 copper coins - (The spiky balls the goblins drop) Basically, the goblin NPC is one of the better guys who will move into your town. Another NPC moves into town while we're dicking around. The arms dealer is the guy we qualified for once we found a gun. We'll look at his inventory later. Right now we're off to the jungle to see what all's down there. Before we do, though, here's our triple jump and flight in action. We're pretty mobile now! Because the entrance to the underground jungle is just an unassuming hole in the ground, I find it's handy to place a bunch of torches around what you suspect is the entrance. The way forward is often disguised by tiny passageways obscured by vines. So if you hit a dead end, you've almost certainly overlooked something somewhere. The good news is that the underground jungle is pretty well lit. Moonglow flowers and other goodies will show you where other passages are. By the way, this whole time until now? We've been in the aboveground jungle. This little line here shows we're about to actually go underground. The underground jungle has a new type of enemy. This looks like the snatcher from last time, but this guy is the Man Eater, and it has almost double the health. A few updates back, I mentioned jungle shrines. This is what those look like. Jungle shrines always have pretty awesome stuff inside. This one had an accessory that lets us swing faster, which is never a bad thing. It also had a honey dispenser furniture object, which lets us craft furniture out of honey blocks. We won't be seeing honey for a while to come, but we can find gigantic beehives down here in the jungle. One of the hornets we kill drops this. A bezoar is an accessory that prevents us from getting poisoned, and like the depth meter we found earlier, it's part of a larger accessory. Though at the end of this road, we'll eventually have an accessory that renders us completely immune to every status effect in the game. I seriously doubt we'll ever get it. I've got it before, and it requires so much farming that it's not even remotely fun. The vast majority of the drops for this accessory can't even be gotten in the first half of the game. In fact, the bezoar is only one of two pieces we can get in the first half. Rarely when you destroy a pot, a portal to the gold dimension can open up. This portal spits out a bunch of gold coins and then disappears. Here, we got 10 gold coins, which isn't too bad. The farther underground we get, eventually spores are going to start spawning. These only spawn in the cavern level underground jungle, and are required for crafting any of the jungle weapons and armor. Combining the shoe spikes and climbing claws let us cling to walls like we're in La-Mulana. Though we can also slide down them at will. Something very important to note: if a beehive falls and hits water, no bees or hornets will spawn. Back in town, the traveling salesman is here. We buy both a stopwatch and a DPS meter from him, so we can now see how fast we're moving and what our DPS is. We can combine the depth meter, the compass, and a clock (made from some chains and 10 gold/platinum bars) to make a GPS. These have to be combined at the goblin NPC's workshop. We don't yet have the item we can combine with the stopwatch and DPS meter. The tiger climbing gear is that accessory I mentioned earlier, the one that lets us slide down walls and cling to them. That's enough for now. Unfortunately, we didn't get the one item I wanted to get out of the jungle. So we'll have to go back later. But that's a good survey of the underground jungle for now. We'll be back in a few updates, when you least expect it. NEXT TIME: Journey to the Center of the Earth DoubleNegative fucked around with this message at 19:23 on Dec 8, 2016 |

A lot of people tell you that you should contain the corruption/crimson, but doing so isn't necessary. If you're worried about your base being overtaken, do what I like to do and just build a floating castle. Who cares what happens to the ground when you're floating above everything?

Getting the Goblin and his workbench are extremely important for optimization and a well geared character. I cannot stress this enough for anyone new to the game. I pretty much do nothing but explore caves till I find him once I beat my first invasion he's that awesome. The rocket boots used to drop as a rare drop from goblins in the invasion before he was an NPC, and they used to run off of mana instead of having a fixed duration. Back in Ye Olde days, this basically meant they were pretty much one of the most OP mobility items in the game and were considered necessary end game gear. They're still awesome, but much more balanced and easier to get. And once you get the workbench and can start combining them with other accessories, they represent one of your major mobility upgrades after getting bottles. You'll basically find yourself wearing boots or some combination of boots + other accessories for almost the rest of the game.

A highly optimized gear path nowadays would prioritize moving past the boot accessory as soon as possible...but where's the fun in that? Seriously, though, the combined boot accessories are great, and it cannot be stressed enough, the workbench is vital even in a normal playthrough. There's SO many useful combinations you can make with it.

Something to keep in in mind when dealing with Man Eaters is their threat radius is deceptively large. While most of the time they just bob around in a set area every so often they will stretch out way further than usual and catch you off guard. It's really fun when you're digging through a wall and have a Man Eater suddenly pop in through the ceiling. Even more fun when a Man Eater is in a wall and you have to try and hit it in half-second it sticks its head out.

Even if you venture a little too close, the knockback from the hits should keep them at bay until you're out of range again. Hah, you thought you could get me, you bastard? Think again! This practice may have started after a Man Eater knocked me off a ledge on my first trip to an underground jungle area and I died. That might have something to do with it.

While the immunity mega item is absolutely awful to get, the informational one isn't much better. All of the items for it are available in the first half of the game, but quite a few of them depend entirely on luck for you to get. For example, that depth meter that double negative just got was one of the last that I got. The only other ones I was missing were one that required dungeon access, and a few that have everyone cursing the angler's name.

#17 - Bat out of Hell Hello everyone, and welcome back to Rivershire. Here you can see that our surface glowing mushroom farm is coming along quite nicely. Six rows of 39 mushroom grass is more than enough to convert the surrounding area into a mushroom biome. This is important for the second half of the game, when one of the game's NPCs will only move into one of those. In fact, before that time comes, we'll actually double this farm in size. It takes almost no resources to do so, and it helps us out immensely. But today we're not worried about that. Today we only have one mission. Today, we're fulfilling this thread's title and going to the center of the world. It's amazing how fast you can descend through the caverns when you don't have to manually dig. By the way, look to the left side of this screenshot. There's one of the demonite deposits that I snuck into an earlier update. This otherwise unassuming wall hides a mini biome. Yes, that is a wall of cobwebs in front of us. This is the spider cavern. There's actually an NPC that spawns inside a spider cavern, and you can access her as early as the beginning of the game if you get lucky. The background tiles for the spider cavern can make it difficult to see light. Though we shouldn't destroy these background tiles, because any spider caverns will infinitely generate cobwebs for the duration of the game. So if we ever run low, we can return to harvest more. After a few minutes of looking over the cavern, we finally meet one of the inhabitants of the spider caves. This is a wall creeper, and it has 100 HP. I usually never find this NPC in the first half of the game. Spider caves aren't rare mini biomes, but they are uncommon enough that you're incredibly unlikely to stumble across them accidentally. If you pay attention, you can sometimes find them by following the screeches of the spiders that spawn inside. Anyway, this is the stylist NPC. She lets us change our hair style and hair color. Her name is Bri and she has an adorable bow in her hair. She'll eventually make her way back to town, so now that we've found her, it's best to move on. Moving on, we kill a skeleton and it drops this. The Ancient Iron Helmet is a pretty rare drop from skeletons, and can actually be used as a piece of the iron armor set. Its appearance is what iron helmets used to be super early in the game's life, back before the 1.0.3 patch. It's a curiosity, but really nothing more. A little further down, and we're back to where we mined out our obsidian. Time to explore even deeper! Spelunking down near lava is hazardous, so often the best course of action is to pave over it with something nearby. Usually I wind up doing this with stone. By the way, don't jump on strange TNT plungers. It never turns out well. Still, dying always teaches a lesson. Even if that lesson is as simple as "don't jump on a TNT plunger you moron." Unfortunately, spelunking in the lower depths of the world is not an exciting endeavor. Usually it involves finding a gigantic lake of lava and digging around it. Riveting stuff, I know. The good news is that we're getting closer to the center. While exploring down in this new cavern, a new and very rare friend comes to say hello. This is Tim the Wizard, and he has a 1-in-200 chance to spawn at random. We can actually manipulate his spawn chance by crafting a mage robe. 20 silk pieces at a loom crafts a regular robe. Then you combine that with 10 gemstones to create a "gemmed robe." These gemmed robes reduce your mana usage by a percent from 5% for an Amethyst Robe to 15% for a Diamond Robe. Wearing one also changes Tim's spawn chance to 1-in-50 because you "need his hat." This hat. While it looks good on Sam, I like the sunglasses better. While returning from the exploration trip, a cave bat starts harassing us. We kill it and it drops this. The Chain Knife has a 0.4% drop rate, or 1-in-250. The weapon is exactly what it sounds like, a knife on a chain. Our current stuff is better, but it's not a bad weapon for earlier in the game. The wiki specifically says it is a great weapon to use against the Brain of Cthulhu, as it keeps the Creepers away wonderfully. The change in background tiles means we're just above the center of the world. There's something kind of ominous about these lava veins lining the walls. You can kinda see it, but the game has added a "heat" filter like you find in the desert. We did it! We've reached the center. If you've never played before, take a moment to take a deep breath before continuing on. Because poo poo is about to get weird. Terraria Soundtrack vol. 3 - Underworld Looks normal so far, right? Just a lot of ash and lava. For what it's worth, the little plants in front of us are fireblossom. Like I said a few updates back, these guys only bloom in the afternoon. You see, we're not just in the center of the world. We're in the underworld. We dug down so far that we've reached actual Hell. This charming fellow in front of us is a fire imp, and he can shoot fireballs through walls. You often find this fact out when you start taking damage from an enemy you can't hit, clear across the screen. He, and every other enemy in Hell, are also immune to lava damage. So anyway, I'm sure you all have been wondering about this purple chest in front of us. These are shadow chests, and to even unlock them, we need to venture into the dungeon to recover a Shadow Key. These chests are worth the trip, though. They often have some of the best and strongest equipment in the first half of the game. Pots in Hell will drop more money and better quality stuff. You're almost guaranteed to find Hellfire Arrows, which explode when they hit a target. Also instead of dropping lesser healing potions, pots in Hell will drop regular healing potions. The random potions you find also tend to be of a higher quality as well. If being in Hell weren't bad enough, it has a new type of bat, appropriately enough named Hellbats. Also when you first get down here, be damned sure to mine out this thing we're standing in front of. The Hellforge is the only way you can smelt the ore unique to Hell: hellstone. One of the random pots we smashed gave us this little beauty. So let's go into the (relative) safety of the lava to mine some Hellstone the easy way. Hellstone is a fiery ore, like meteorite. So if you want to mine it safely, you absolutely should have your obsidian skull equipped. There's also one little snag to hellstone. You see, earlier in the game it was too easy to mine it safely. So the developers added a little snag. Now when you mine Hellstone, it creates lava. This is a lava slime. It's one of the few enemies that has an actual mechanical change between normal and expert modes. In expert mode, lava slimes will also create lava on death. This is a demon, and he's holding a Guide Voodoo Doll. These guys in particular are why you need to be super loving careful in Hell. On death, this guy drops a guide voodoo doll. You want to do absolutely everything in your power to not let that voodoo doll touch lava. Real Bad poo poo will happen if that voodoo doll hits lava. This is a disaster waiting to happen. Too voodoo demons, a fire imp, and offscreen two lava slimes and a hellbat. Demons and their voodoo cousins attack by firing these magic slices at us. If the slices hit, they have a pretty good chance to inflict the "blindness" debuff, which makes the screen darker. Though in Hell you hardly notice the effect. Spot my mistake. gently caress gently caress gently caress gently caress gently caress gently caress gently caress. So the one thing I told everyone to be careful of just happened. There are actually two status messages, but I'm going out of my way to not show the second one. Know that a boss has just spawned, and it is pissed off. Very very pissed off. We're at nowhere close to ideal conditions for fighting this thing. It has a truckload of HP, and is not a boss you want to fight while navigating the landscape of Hell. We're also hurting pretty badly. So we do the only thing we can do and end things on our terms instead of its. So we made it down to Hell, but we hosed up in as big a way as we possibly could have. We sacrificed our oldest friend in Terraria and in return all that happened was we released a Thing That Should Not Be. The rain feels like a fitting end to this update. We can make some Hellstone bars as a consolation prize. We rescued 52 pieces of ore, so we can make 17 bars. Though look closely at that recipe. Yes, Hellstone Bars need 3 ore and a piece of obsidian. Hellstone stuff is the strongest material in the first half of the game, so while it's expensive to make, every thing we can make is worth it. The bow alone is 55% stronger than the one we made from crimtane. It also makes each regular arrow innately a fire arrow. We can also make an Imp Staff. It summons a fire imp to fight for us. While summon weapons are nice, I like direct damage stuff better. Still, it never hurts to have a helper. Finally, we can make this. It... can wait. We can also make a single piece of armor, but it's not worth losing the meteor set bonuses. Not yet, at least. I feel confident that I made the right choice for which weapon to make. This bow will last us for the entire rest of the first half of the game. Our minerals chest is looking pretty full. Though there are still some holes we can fill in. This is a pretty good note to end the update on. Everyone say hello to Bradley. He's no Garrett, but I'm sure he'll do just fine. NEXT TIME: Let it go! Let it gooooo! I actually really like the Hell biome. It's naturally bright so you don't have to throw down torches everywhere. I also just really like the scenery, from the buildings you explore to the background which received a beautiful overhaul at one point during development. It's a challenging place to visit for sure but there's some really good stuff to be found down there if you can brave the heat and strong enemies. Those demons in particular drop one of my favorite first half magic items and it's usually good enough to last a respectable distance into the second half too.

I thought the voodoo doll can only drop from voodoo demons, not from regular demons? Since they're pretty much a palet swap it's the same thing basically but still... it could save a bit of frustration if you can not stress about half the demons that spawn instead of all of them So this is where I usually go and harvest a metric buttload of rock. For reasons related to hell.

I think That Boss probably requires the second-most amount of preparation to fight comfortably. It's a pity you can't make asphalt until you hit the second half, because having a shitload of that would make That Boss so much easier! It also occurs to me that because of the way the game works, you could theoretically explore the dungeon before hitting the Underworld. /edit: strikeout is not spoiler. BBCode is hard. So! Some thoughts. Ancient Iron Helmet: This is actually just one of several legacy items that are now rare drops. Most of them have no value beyond aesthetics, but the Shadow Armor mentioned earlier that can be made from Demonite actually has a legacy set as well. The enemy you see floating around everywhere in the corruption has a chance of dropping the pieces of this set... at a 2% drop rate for each. So, as I stated earlier, you'd have to be extremely lucky, but you can get Shadow Armor as drops right at the start of the game before getting literally anything else. And to think that there was a point in development where that was endgame armor. Voodoo Dolls: How tragic! Those poor NPCs! This is far from the last time any of them will die, I'm sure. Far, far from it. New players should be aware that, at least in Normal mode, the gear now being used is sufficient to take on the boss that was just glimpsed, but, uh, some prep time is recommended. Some trial and error may prove necessary. Lava Slimes: The second most annoying thing in Hell on Expert, due to the lava they drop on death. It becomes a constant aggravation you need to plan around while working down there. Hell bats: The most annoying thing in Hell on Expert, even more so than the Demons slinging magical blades around that can two-shot you. I killed over 500 of this enemy while attempting to prepare for that mystery boss; the game keeps track. Demons: The best enemy in hell, for Reasons.

Oh right, in an early 1.0.x version Lava Slimes dropped their lava all the time. There was no such thing as Expert Mode back then. I think it was removed in the very next patch because it made Hell such a pain in the rear end to navigate. Cool to hear that it was recycled into Expert Mode later on.

Rather Watch Them posted:I've been mirroring your progress pretty well on my file, but I often get too sidetracked by other caverns to actually dig down. It's just so satisfying uncovering parts of the map, especially if they have golden chests. Think of Spider biomes this way. They're your only way to have cobwebs respawn in a single place. If you're insane to try and get 100% of the items, you'll need a LOT of silk which in turn needs a LOT of loving Cobwebs. Also. The spiders in that biome change into something else after the half-way point. The pre-halfway spiders drop something decent that makes certain classes happy.

I know it's counter-productive but... I hate bugs with a passion. When I learned that antlions have a flying variety, I freaked out a little. Something about the design of these creatures just scream "throw bombs until the problem goes away." But for the sake of completion, I guess I can keep one intact. The grind is worth it.

I've actually had my opinion of summon builds improve quite a bit recently, especially when I found out that imp summons can inflict the on fire debuff. Any opportunity to stack dot is very good, especially when dealing with later bosses.
