Starshiy Leytenant Irakliy Kuznetsov

Irakliy freezes for a crucial, painful moment. Then he lunges at the grate, attempting to get a closer look at... whatever it was, before it vanishes.

It proves futile. The adrenaline promptly decides to leave his system and the tanker collapses to his knees, clutching at the grate and the radio desk for support.

He looks up. "Nyet. On ne--" He catches himself, and lets go of the vent. "No. Just... eyes. In ventilation shaft. I called for surrender and it ran off."

Merde, merde, merde, the thing got away, but it might still be close enough?

The shotgun roars tearing the vent grate apart. Victoire immediately rushes to it and peers in but nothing to be seen.

"Merde." she utters to herself silenty. "Tout va bien, everything's fine!" she yells to her allies that are not yet in the room. No need to worry them even more.

He steps in a circle around the Command Centre, his boots kicking up ash and burnt debris. "Bugger..." he utters with a grimace. Whatever important information was left in here looks beyond saving, they'd just have to hope they get lucky somewhere else. He's busy looking over the destroyed Enigma machine as Kuznetsov wanders into the radio room, having never seen one himself up close before even if it is caved in as hell.

When he hears the Russian yell at something, his head whips up in a flash and barely a look is given to the others before he rushes in with Victoire. "Some bugger's in there?!" How the hell were they going to flush him out..?

With some answer to that question, Victoire's shotgun blast tears through the silence of the room with the sound bouncing of the walls and nearly causing the pilot to go deaf. He covers his ears instinctively and waits for the ringing to abate some before he looks to the woman at the now destroyed grate, a flash of anger in his eyes. "Doucet!! You will drat well control that firearm of yours in these spaces unless absolutely necessary, is that clear?! Need I remind you that we are to bring in prisoners, if possible?! Shooting this man won't get us the answers we need to learn what the bloody hell happened here!"

"That man can tell us what was going on here, something the burnt remains in that room back there-" he gestures back to the Command Centre, "-can't. And he won't be able to tell us anything if a shotgun blast removes his head. I don't know how we flush him out just yet, but we don't harm him unless he moves to harm us." He looks down at the woman reloading a shell into her weapon. If people were going to look to him for decisions, they were bloody well going to follow them when he made them. "And you keep that finger off that trigger from now on unless something's shooting back at you."

Letting Nazis shoot first is how you let good people die. She's seen it before, way too often. Clémence, Martin, Lou, Robert. All of them very close friends, all of them gone because they hesitated. Sgt. Willis

Before the medic can leave, Tim says diffidently, "Room's well armored, ma'am. You get hit by a ricochet and it's one of us grunts trying to stop the bleeding." On a long look around the command center, he finds himself concurring with the Russian. This was deliberate. Which meant- "Deliberate leaving and enough intact machinery to tempt. Touch nothing until I check for traps," the engineer curtly instructs before beginning to move around the room, using his trained eye to examine all the places where he'd put little surprises for anyone on his tail. In truth, when there had been someone in the vents, Tim only felt a vague relief- there was something living here other than a ghost. He'd been starting to wonder about that. He figured the shotgun blast was a little excessive, but hell, couldn't blame the woman. Something about this place was odd to the point of setting Tim's teeth on edge, but if you shied at every scary thing you'd never get anything done. Once finished with traps, he starts following his more explicity orders and begins surveying both the equipment left intact here and in the radio room as well as make a quick mental list of what he could and couldn't repair.

"Can you see?"

Saxemberg Island - Hoffmann Station - Radio Room
Ambience

Victoire's shotgun blisters buckshot through the steel grating of the vent--but peering in afterward finds no trace of anyone having been on the other side. The sound of the shotgun's blast carries some distance before the quiet hum of the power station and thrumming air filtration resumes unabated. Once the medic leaves, Sgt. Willis interjects before the radio is activated, beginning to search the vicinity for potential booby traps.

Soon enough, the Ted's suspicions are justified upon discovering that an 88mm high explosive shell hidden behind the main console has been rigged to detonate upon the radio receiving an active current. An unusual choice for demolitions munitions with a curious arrangement for its implementation. Fortunately, with as simply as the explosive setup is presented, a few careful wire snips and Sgt. Willis is confident he has disarmed the shell.

Afterward, it's a simple matter for Sgt. Willis to help bring the radio instrument console online--and as power is directly restored, numerous gauges and dials return to activity. Irakliy begins his endeavor to make contact outside of the island, only to swiftly discover that while the radio room's instrumentation has been left operational, it would seem that the actual antennae which it utilized is... missing altogether.

While unable to make communication via the purposefully sabotaged equipment, the exercise is not entirely fruitless: by reviewing the remnant settings of the configuration, Lt. Kuznetsov is able to document what seems to be main frequencies in use by the Germans. Though no technical data can be gleaned beyond such, he nevertheless has retrieved the potential means for listening in on the German communications network in the future.

Saxemberg Island - Hoffmann Station - The Vault

Rummaging through loose paperwork among the debris, Grace begins attempting to piece together coherent articles--but her initial efforts prove quarrelsome at best. Pacing along the detritus of an overturned container, Sebastian's eye catches a small ruptured crate--with a leather-hilted blade sheathed among packing hay. Gathering up the piece, the man finds it to be a seven inch long silver blade with a silver inlaid brace and pommel, its hilt wrapped in old, pliant leather; it seems fairly old on cursory inspection--perhaps one hundred years or more.

Over among the great bedlam of documents, Bradley and Yulia begin to gather disparate documents that collectively lay the foundations for a proper investigation. A recurring motif discovered on a fair number of the articles repeatedly indicates the occult organization moniker of the 'Black Sun'--and it would seem that this vault was utilized as a holding facility for later transit to other locations.

Among the materials present, it seems apparent that there were efforts made to remove or destroy evidence within the vault itself prior to whatever events led to the base' curious desertion--but something must have interrupted or deterred them from a more comprehensive solution to the undertaking.

Though most of the materials left behind are scattered and incomplete, further investigation begins to clean certain common and recurring mentions. Works by the German mathematician Felix Klein are mentioned repeatedly, referring to something later declared the 'Klein Cell' as some sort of containment method.

Within these technical briefs there are also repeated mentions of 'Blauer Kristall' following excavations in Sumatra with purportedly remarkable properties for a wide range of engineering applications (though greater details of such are, at least initially absent from the findings here.) Further documentation seems to suggest that despite holding numerous 'Black Sun' articles at various times, the Saxemberg Island station was primarily a Nachtwölfe facility.

Bradley comes across a relatively intact set of documentation concerning itself with 'black steel', which seems to be regarded as an exceptionally durable, lightweight metal which is seemingly nigh impervious to extreme temperatures. Discussing the acquisition of the necessary ores, however, swiftly delves into bizarre nonsense as the document's author refers to a 'plateau of leng'.

Yulia finds a torn and partly burned scrap of a record for vault internment which makes reference to, at least at one point, having held copies of 'UNAUSPRECHLICHEN KULTEN' and 'DE ORIGINE ET SITU GERMANORUM'. Coupled with such sparse details, she further finds a brief mention of a transport arriving and departing from this location with a shipment of '100ct. Die Gefallenen' with no further indication of the entry.

Victoire fires a shotgun shell into the ventilation to no effect, beyond damaging the grate cover. She has 29 shots remaining.

Ted discovers and disarms a crude, but remarkably dangerous explosive device, almost certainly saving Irakliy's life (the 88mm shell would have dealt 4d8 damage to a burst radius sufficient to fill the entire radio room with 8 armor penetration negating all possible cover in the room.)

In more German-engineered disappointment for Irakliy, after all that it seems they actually removed the antenna altogether from the island's radio array. However, in their haste they did not purge the settings of the radio equipment--and Irakliy is now aware of what seems to be a secret German radio frequency used for who knows what sorts of communication. It's a good find!

Grace's initial Investigation is unsuccessful and Sebastian begins with some success on the contrary. However, Yulia and Bradley together have kicked off great success--such that I am generally considering the efforts of the four within the Vault to be an ongoing Cooperative test.

There's a lot to dig through, provided nothing untoward happens that might interfere with their ongoing investigation.

Irakliy's eyes can't help but bog as Sgt. Willis hefts the 88mm shell out from behind the console. Once it's been set safely aside, he claps the man firmly on the shoulder. "Bol'shoye spasibo. I owe you a very, very large drink."

Shaking his head slightly at almost dying to such an elementary trap, he sets to work at the consoles, and is shortly glaring frustratedly at what remains of the antenna attachment. Saxemberg Island - Hoffmann Station - Map Room
Ambience

Venturing across the hall from the Command Centre, Irakliy and Victoire enter the 'Map Room' together--and find the situation a markedly better one than command had been, albeit not a particularly high bar. Much like the rest of the base, the map room has been ransacked--the floor scattered with debris. Nevertheless, the room is not without its prizes.

Dominated by a massive metal table at its center, an enormous printed map details the southern oceans and Anarctic coast. Among the scattered objects on the floor, Victoire spots handfuls of nylon plastic markers with magnetised strips on the reverse--and a variety of numbers and letters printed on their front, seemingly of some significance for their differences.

Lt. Kuznetsov's eyes are drawn promptly to the sizable map itself, however--in particular, one location on the Antarctic coast seems to have more scratches and marks than elsewhere on the map. It is easy to surmise, thus, that it must be a location of significant to the Germans for some reason.

Elsewhere on the map within Antarctica is a curious, star-shaped marking that has been repeatedly scratched into the surface of the map and table itself beneath it.

"At the very least, us coming here will prove to be useful. Not a lot here, but definitely enough to provide us with some leads about what the Nazis are doing."

As he looked over the mentions of Black Sun and Nachtwölfe, he remembered hearing mentions of both groups. Not a lot was known about either of them though. And now they seem to be working together.

This way you can tell people the Reich is not a new thing, but a culmination of an old thing, build the mythos of your Nazi regime by working backwards." The Russian shrugs her shoulders, "This is what they would tell you in Leningrad." She sounds less convinced.

She moves her flashlight around the vault again, checking the dark corners of the room with less certainty, "That is not what this is, though. This is not a place of kulturkampf. This is a place of... vernyy - the Faithful. To have such things, in a facility in such a place..." She trails off. Bradley and Grace know what she is inferring. Khulanova looks down to one of the papers, "What is 'one hundred crates of the fallen'?" Shaking her head, "Our superiors will want all of this, I should think."

Richard 'Dicky' Barton-Morewood

He merely stands back and continues to be impressed by Sgt. Willis and Comrade Kuznetsov as the two men separately disarm the radio and retrieve the hidden Jerry radio frequency. "Blinding good work, chaps. Sgt. Willis, I agree." To the others, he calls; "No one touch important equipment until Sgt.Willis has had a chance to check for traps." With their work seemingly done for now in the Command Centre, he follows Kuznetsov and Doucet to the Map Room, all but running the last steps as Doucet calls for him.

Boots once again crunch debris underneath as this room has also been ransacked like the others so far. Stepping over to the large table in the middle of the room, he peers down at the map that marks yet another hidden Jerry point of interest; this one in the world's freezer. "The Antarctic, eh? Wonder what Jerry found of interest all the way out there..." One thing bugs him; why would they go out of their way to demolish so much in their evacuation but leave this map perfectly intact for him to read? His eyes wander over to the strange, star-shaped mark. "Should get our academic tag-alongs to work out what the hell this means."

When Izoldah speaks, he turns to her with a nod after a thoughtful pause. "Indeed. Good thinking, Rostov." The man would have access to the armoury for some time now, but their arrival coupled with the unnecessary firing from Doucet would give the chap all the more incentive to arm himself. That is, if the Germans left anything to be armed with after they left. "We'll make a move, soon as I'm done with these markers Doucet has found."

Speaking of which, he turns to Doucet. "Mind if I have a look at these, miss? I have some experience with map markers, might make heads or tails of it." His voice is calmer now, more friendly towards the woman as he reaches out for the marker she holds. He also grabs a few off the floor to study.

While he might not have little idea what kind of nonsense the civvies are talking about, and it might not make a whole lot of sense to him, he can't help but be amused at the prospect of Nazis trying to find weird books and icons to save their alleged Reich. Fat lot of good it has done the Germans so far, what with Stalin knocking at the gates from the East, and Ike, Omar and George from the West. It strikes Ronnie as strangely desperate.

Still, he's going to do his job, and with the discharge over on the other end of the base and the signs of mutiny, he's not going to keep his guard too down; there could still be someone left, just waiting to do something stupid. He keeps watch, looking this way and that, keeping his ears open as well.

Victoire hands him the map marker and turns her attention back to the map itself.
But the strange symbol didn't mean anything to her.

I have made some quick and dirty round pogs of all portraits, 75x75 px even though I might need to resize them. You can grab yours here if you want to add it to your posts http://imgur.com/a/OxN3J

Also working with Gaist I drafted a preliminary map of the base since I'm a rather visual person and this definitely painted a clearer pic for me. it's not 100% accurate but apparently a good basic reference. 1 square is 5 feet http://i.imgur.com/0oVpqSx
The roll20 to draw that map is at https://app.roll20.net/join/1711844/qDBHqw if you want to add stuff to the drawings. I'll make anyone who logs in GM so you can edit the map layer. It is also a SW template so you could even put your char sheet here if you want.

"Little by little the old world crumbled, and not once did the king imagine that some of the pieces might fall on him"

Izoldah

Izoldah was a lot more concerned about the armory than looking at the markers, but talking back to officers was probably not the best plan, after the earlier tension. For now, she figured she should just take position in the hallway, and kept a close eye on that door, and the hallway coming from the other side. She hated indoors combat, but at least with the hallway, she'd have something of a line of fire if some fascist tried to make a move.

Sebastian

Sebastian pulled the knife from the broken crate and stood up looking it over as he walked back to where Bradley and the others were gathered around some sort of book they had found.

"Found this in a broken crate over there" He pointed back to where he found it.

"Can you see?"

Saxemberg Island - Hoffmann Station - The Vault
Ambience

Upon reflection of the Unspeakable Cults Bradley recalls a printing from the mid nineteenth century by Friedrich Wilhelm von Junzt; also commonly referred to as the 'Black Book', the tome covered matters of the author's ties to a variety of cults and secret socities--but further, detailed a number of purported sorcerous rituals.

Given his rather personal experience with a later edition of the tome, Bradley 'benefited' from additional notations at the time. In such notes, it was suggested that the Unausprechlichen Kulten informed of how to summon a variety of otherworldly creatures, including 'children of the deep'--and was rumored to even include instructions on how to bring the deceased back to life.

Sebastian further studies the recovered blade--and in short order, is certain that its history ties it to Wallachia of the fifteenth century. It is, without a doubt, a sacrificial blade--all the more apparent when continued scrutiny discerns the waviness of its edge and the subtle, worn etchings of intricate runic patterns along the flat sides of the blade itself. Simply holding the knife unsheathed sends goose bumps to rise for Sebastian.

Just outside of the vault, as Harry, Ronnie and Dimitry stand sentry while the auxiliary team conducts their research, Harry is in the midst of an amusing anecdote when Ronnie's attention is caught by the barest of sounds of commotion: a sudden clattering of dropped metal down the westward corridor, coming from the direction of the mess hall and officer's quarters.

Saxemberg Island - Hoffmann Station - Map Room

Sgt. Barton-Morewood ducks into the map room in time--and upon having a look at the map markers, is quick to recognize the purpose of their numbering: coupled with the multitudinous markings on the table map itself, someone familiar with navigation such as he can correlate points to plot courses and monitor the movement of vessels throughout the region.

With time and notation reviewing the map along with a set of the markers, Dicky could document activity pertaining to those movements--and the curious site in Antarctica of seeming significance.

Out in the corridor nearby, Izoldah stands ready as the blast door to the armoury is activated and... s l o w l y begins to rise.

Sheesh, folks rolling some serious hits and raises with some of these research and history checks! Good stuff though, and a good time to glean those big hits. Dicky has duffed his first roll, but used a benny for a successful re-roll afterward, in the meantime.

Ronnie is the only sentry to have made a Notice check: something's going down in the mess hall, because it sure as hell isn't any of the twelve who arrived on the island in there.

I liked it--it was witty enough and a lot more impressive than I was expecting for a girl's toy cartoon. So I thought, "Hmm. I'm on Something Awful. I don't see a thread for this anywhere, but other people might like it--it's not like it would be the first cartoon for kids that SA's taken a shine to." So I made a real earnest thread and put it up in TV/IV. And I was both right and wrong, because the forum blew up and fell over, and the thread got raided to shit by FYAD, and in like I think two weeks the show was banned outright because people kept causing fucking drama.

Starshiy Leytenant Irakliy Kuznetsov

Irakliy steps back from the armory control panel and drops into a crouch against the wall, leveling his Sten. Not going to be caught off guard a third time.

Reflexes go into motion almost immediately. One hand goes up, his knees go into a crouch, and he twists, bird dog-like, towards the west. "...gotta stop you there," he whispers. He taps the edge of the Vault doorframe with the butt of his rifle. "Eyes open," he says just a bit louder. "Ears open." He stares down the long pathway running over from where the vault was. No, he's sure he had heard something. Absolutely sure. Which means-

"Contact over that way. We better clear out of here. Hey." And then just a little bit louder besides, "It ain't just us here.."

A sense of dread crept through his body. He looked at Yulia, but couldn't find the words to speak. What were these bastards planning, he wondered.

"Yes," He replied struggling to get the words out, "We need to secure as much of this evidence as we can find. Our superiors will want to know about this."

When he referenced the Golden Goblin Press version, the text focused primarily on the prehistoric cults, but he had heard that the original edition had much more in it. At the time he didn't mind not being able to access the other parts of the book, but he wondered what prompted the Nazis to want to study the text. He shuddered remembering the time in Sweden. Why couldn't he remember what happened? He tried to put the thoughts of chasing myths out of his mind.

"This book. I am not sure why the Nazis would be interested in it. If they have the original text, it told about how to summon demon like beasts that existed before man walked the Earth and if the stories about it are true. The book had spells to raise the dead. Are they that desperate that they would try attempting black magic? The war is going against them, but do they think they can invoke imaginary deities to help them fight?" Bradley shook his head.

Grace

Grace wrings her hands during Ronnie's warning and Bradley verbally connecting the Nazis to the Unausprechlichen Kulten. "Spells to raise the dead?" She clears her throat. "It must be desperation." The MI6 agent glances at the entrance and asks the SOE operative, "Should some of us stand guard?"

"What?" He looked over at the door to the vault and saw Sergeant Thomas. Bradley nodded at the man and moved towards the door. "I agree, Grace."

He brought up his sten and switched the safety off.
