Since most of you don't follow the Weather thread in A/T and probably don't care one bit about anything weather related beyond "Is it going to rain and do I need a jacket" you probably don't know about Hurricane Matthew. Let me introduce you to him: Thats Matthew. He is a Catagory 5 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale. This is the latest advisory: quote:BULLETIN Now.. Why does this matter and why did I make this post? Well there are a few reasons. First, in about 2-3 days its going to gently caress up Jamaica. So if thats where you get your from, see the title. Also if you like cigars and have a hookup in eastern Cuba, do him a solid and just wire him a plane ticket to somewhere not Cuba Because thats going to get loving rekt too. The more important reason I made this thread is that this storm is loving AWESOME. Now this is some nerd poo poo that 99% of people won't understand nor care. But you motherfuckers get to about video games, sports, and what ever dumb poo poo you kids get into these days. I go on about weather. So lets have a short chat. This storm underwent a phenomenon known as Rapid Intensification. Its exactly what it sounds like. Tropical cyclones have 2 measurements that denote strength. Minimum Central Pressure which is noted in millibars (mb) and wind speed which is given in either mph or knots (kts). So this is the Saffir-Simpson scale: 36 hours ago Matthew was a tropical storm. Then this happened: quote:sep 29 1500 GMT 14.2 -66.3 70 996 Tropical Storm The 5th colum is wind speed in mph, the 6th colum is minimum central pressure in millibars. How common is this? Well, it isn't . I mentioned this earlier in the weather thread, but over a 24 hour period it dropped 44mb and winds jumped 56.5kts. Which isn't far off of what Andrew jumped before it erased Homestead AFB off the face of the earth. Its a really big deal. And more than one person at the NHC is probably masturbating to a satellite loop of the last 36-39 hours of this storm because it was really loving cool. Now what impact does this have on you? Well it doesn't, probably. Again, unless you have ties to Jamaica, eastern Cuba, western Hispaniola or the Bahamas, there is no reliable evidence that its going to impact I will try to keep this semi-updated on Matthew, and anyone who lives in an area affected by it, let us know that you are about to die.

South Florida checking in, I'm sort of happy that I've got a crew coming in about ten hours to install a new garage door in my house that's up to hurricane code and doesn't have to have the tines of a fork jammed into it to stay locked. Otherwise right now local news stations are using the BIG GRAPHICS and the meteorologists are starting to GET HYPE so it looks like we're going to play the waiting game again since we haven't had a good East coast hurricane since Wilma in 2005.

Lets talk for a moment about weather models. They are computer programs that take a bunch of data, do some Most of the time 2 or 3 are reasonably accurate in the short term (2-3 days) if they initialize well, and the rest are either complete trash or have an obvious error that tells you the earth will be wiped out by a giant meteor 3 days out. Most are run every 12 hours on 00z and 12z (z being Zulu or Greenwich Mean Time). These models along with past and current data from the entire Atlantic basin and North American Continent is how the NHC creates that fancy cone of movement. This thing: That is the official forecast. As I said, models do play a part in creating that. One of those models, and usually a reliable one is the GFS ensemble. This is a screen cap from the latest run 141 hours out, or roughly Wednesday evening: Thats... Distressing.. And just in case you think North Carolina is nice this time of year here is 177 hours out, roughly Friday night: Now this is just one run, and one model. So its nothing to panic over. But the trend west is pretty consistent with most of the models from the 00z run. So its something worth looking at.

No. If they live on the islands, they are probably going to die. If they live on the East Coast of the US, then they either have insurance or are loving stupid and don't deserve help. This seems like bad information, there's going to be at least 3 "charities" begging for money to help these "victims" during this "tragedy." And you know somewhere in the midwest there is going to be at least one church group / charity driving up interest by driving to the east coast with water and food for the idiots that live in hurricaneville.

Just because someone sets up a charity for a group of people, it doesn't mean those people deserve the help. Hence telling you that you should not start one. If you live on a hurricane prone coast line, and do not have insurance, you deserve to lose everything and have no help to replace it.
