I'm not convinced he was going to do some bad stuff either. He might have just had that gun "just in case". That phone call wasn't enough to be suspicious either because he later said that he phoned someone about the bombings. It's not to say he wasn't considering committing crimes to improve his station, but I'm just not sure that he's definitely into some illegal stuff. It could go either way, though.

I instantly knew that the ex-wife was in on it because the actress delivered her lines with such an obvious false air of "oh what a shame". I'm not sure if I Iike that because it's giving foreshadowing to the audience, or if I should not like it because Watson failed to pick up on the pretty obvious insincerity.
