I've been looking to buy back into Train Sim and I see the 2020 pack just released. Are the 2020 inclusion trains/locations any decent or are there better packages to pick up during a sale? It's been a while but my fondest memories are more of commuter English trains than long hauls or shunting scenarios which I guess means I'm a fan of anything involving attentive through driving.

I am thoroughly disinterested in TSW because by the time I play Train Sim I want to be the train and not be a guy running around a train. So I was originally eyeing up TS.

But I guess it's worth asking if TSW is offering anything worthwhile beside that to consider that instead. It didn't seem like it last I heard about it.

What's the point this time around? I never really had the hook get set with Spintires and it seemed mostly a mudding with friends sim even with some of the transport and point of interest goals.

I started up a My Summer Car run over the weekend actually. The Finnish teen small business stuff still has a concerning hold on my number go up soul and gives a point to the traversal around the map with your different transport types.

drat it looks really good graphically. I really want to believe it has an acceptable campaign here, it's both highlighting the shop and currency aspect while also kind of glossing over it.

I impulse bought and lol steering wheel support is partially-fully broken depending on your wheel, known issue, check back later.

I'm not sure this is a big loss because apparently Mudrunner never really got good wheel support so I'm not gonna expect suddenly better here.

I think I like Snowrunner for different reasons than I thought I didn't like Spintires. The money is kind of a vestigial asset cap to keep you from filling the map up with too many trucks and trailers. I haven't sold anything to see how much if any is lost on the exchange but at the end of the day you're going to get more feels from checking the mission or task off the list than from the money and experience you get from it.

Where it's actually hooking me is the flow just seems nicer than I remember in Spintires. That's possibly because I never really learned the map right then, but here there's a lot of dirt roads (on the first map, wouldn't doubt things get more off road in later maps) and even some good stretches of tarmac so you aren't spending 50% of the trip rocking yourself out of mud you didn't see or climbing a ridge you just barely misjudged your rig being able to climb.

The garage and upgrade stuff is pretty neat but wouldn't doubt some of that came out of Mudrunner, again last I touched in the series was the original.

I'm still just building some of the traversal helper tasks in the first Michigan map but are you supposed to be able to tell how much one truck might be able to haul over another? The only power stat is power to weight ratio which is a garbage number for doing any intelligent planning of haulage. You get that heavy duty truck once you get the to garage but I'm wondering if I'm falling into a trap using it for hauling instead of the highway truck and maybe I'm supposed to be doing something like using the highway truck to haul ridiculous amounts until it gets stuck and use the heavy duty for repair/fueling/winching duty if the highway truck is stuck.

Most cargo take up 1 unit but some take up 2, for example steel beams (planks?) and concrete slab.
I got that. Weight and engine power is hidden though so if I have an A+ power to weight ratio on a scout, a highway truck, and a heavy duty they all have different acceleration and speed response when hauling 2 units and I can't tell if there's some way I'm supposed to know or if it's just trial and error and rules of thumb of how big the truck is.

If you start selling your starting trucks after a couple missions you can afford an off-road truck from the shop.

The progression in this game seems slightly upside down that way. Level gating all terrain tires for the highway/heavy duty trucks sure is a decision that seems like it's made to force you to sell those starting trucks and come back for aesthetics/fuel efficiency if you want after you get a few levels working with an off-road truck.

Hitting a stride in Snowrunner now that I have a Paystar offroad and the Fleetstar heavy duty. Have all terrain tires so diff lock means you're never really truly bogged down in mud (except for some of the no mans lands of 3 ft deep fields and mud banks with tasks to rescue material, you are clearly meant to do these with mud tires). And Paystar stock engine and Fleetstar fuel guzzling upgrade from Black River map mean most grades can also be traversed in low with diff lock.

Drummond Island spoilers this is where you get the offroad gearbox which is for the Paystar and Fleetstar at least (all highway, offroad, and heavy duty american trucks maybe?) and lets you run diff lock at low+ which gets your rear end movin https://imgur.com/kOHGKiH. It seems easier to come from Island Lake but I haven't actually loaded the Island Lake map to know what the traversal is from the dam tunnel to the Drummond tunnel. I came in directly from the dam and had to ford the river, if you can't tell by fog of war its a bit north of the tourist attraction flag

Also they don't make it immediately clear but you can burn out your gearbox running diff lock on non slippy surfaces at 25 pts gearbox damage an offence. You can tell its happening if your transmission overlay shows up changing colors.

Feel like I need a cigarette after that truckfuckling in Not a Drill.

The route I took for the maintenance module was pretty calm all considering, trailer disconnected twice which means my greatest enemy was actually the truss bridge. But the physics interpolation in the game right now is special and every trailer hookup with that thing was nerve wracking because I needed to jam into it in reverse, quickly couple, and cross my fingers the shaking doesn't propel me to the moon. Least I'm not playing multiplayer where those interpolation errors followed by rapid acceleration away from intersection points (thus to the moon) seem routine when mixed with the net code.

50% of my time spent yesterday was hubris related to a bad idea involving a semi trailer and the dinky crane to do the machinery recovery mission in Black River where the boxes are on hills/ridges. Ended up resetting as they all ended up in the trees on a ridge. Was loaded up 3 separate times until a bad grade sent the rig for a trip.

Semi trailers are so good! And so bad! I'd probably use the other trailers more if you could lock or even lift the front axle. I know how to back up and maneuver steerable trailers but I don't like it.

zedprime
Jun 9, 2007

If you're in dirt and just want to go vaguely backwards you can break the axle all the way, wiggling enough that you ground the back of the truck to the front of the trailer and apply maximum throttle, once it's cocked all the way to the side it's just a bad sled for the moment. You can similarly jackknife and put your truck paralell to the nose of the trailer, hit reverse, and turn in place, now with all the wheels on the trailer acting as a bad sled. These actions cover what I do 90% of the time and is honestly vaguely the "right" answer for an empty flatbed that you don't pay maintenance on (if somebody was paying for tires and axle repairs you would be getting screamed at for doing these)

Otherwise it's just a game of telephone where you use your truck butt to tell another truck what to do. The front axle controls the attitude of the truck. And you control the front axle with the hitch on your truck. People like to be pithy and play on normal trailer backing in and say it's simple, you just do the opposite of the opposite of what you want to do, but that loses the subtlety that the trailer is backing in like any other trailer, you're just controlling the steering through a layer of translation.

From 3rd person this is almost easier than normal trailers because you can see the axle very clearly. Besides trying to break the axel just so with a loving analog stick.

I can back up doubles OK in truck sim, but something about the steering axle on these trailers confounds me. It almost seems like they’re too loose or something - I can’t turn it to the angle I want and then turn the wheel to push that angle. (If that makes any sense.)
Loaded or empty? The weight on axle sim seems to be on point and the empty flatbed is begging for locking the steering for example. Or maybe confirmation bias, either or. But in real life the stiction in the hub is set up to work right at full load and that occasionally turns into impossible to steer when empty and you would pin it locked and just deal with the dead axle which shouldn't be a big problem because it's light.

Otherwise I blame analog stick steering. But make sure you aren't being too aggressive on the first break. You start it with a very gentle turn, then do the full opposite lock to get in front of the tongue while it starts turning. It's already going to be on its way to turning before you see the tongue noticeably break and you need to be on your way to catching it already so if youre not catching it, the first gentle turn wasn't gentle enough (or the stiction in the hub is hosed up)

If you can back in a trailer, that's half the battle but also a lot of visual memory to override.

The task and contract UIX is trash but I have two rules now to work around.

Sometimes you need to use an exact something or other. Also sometimes if it's just materials there might be trailers nearby. You can check both of these by always highlighting the requirement in the map to see where your options are. This isn't perfect when there's multiple sources unfortunately and you also need to look at the different pickup points then.

The task headings don't seem to make it clear if the first header is a prereq or not. So always track it and see if your heads up tracker gives you everything or just the first piece. If it's just the first piece it's a prereq and you need to do it first.

Contracts with a globe usually have a bit of a building thing going on when finishing. They also roll up to the map status you see when changing maps. I guess that makes them main. Contracts to open depots and tasks to build bridges are my priority when getting to a map though.

The contract or task usually mentions the hitch you need when it comes to special trailers. But rule of thumb is no semi- qualifier is a simple hitch including curtainsiders, semi- trailers use saddle low, the super special contract trailers are saddle high, and I don't think you find them around the map really but heavy semi- use saddle high.

Oh and scout are ball hitch to scouts only.

The BM17 is cool looking but I'm puzzled how an off-road truck doesn't have a locking diff option. It's a highway truck for military improved dirt roads I guess. Doesn't help when it's stuck in mud.

You can traverse a ton of the Alaska map on iced road though so I guess it could be worse?

I think I've spoiled myself with the White Western Star. All of the strengths of the Paystar and Fleetstar in one frame without the tippyness of either.

The trucks look nice when they get dirty so I have an excuse that least use them for one task or contract.

I've found a good way to use more heavy trucks or specialized trucks is to use something like a generalized truck (My White Western Star with chained tires) until it gets stuck in mud and use the off-road specialist or heavy to tow it out.

The biggest problem with this is the chained tires problems in mud are greatly exaggerated. They're similar to all terrain which is enough to keep moving in any mud that doesn't come up to your body while diff locked. So I haven't actually gotten stuck besides the time I had a P12 tow a P6 with mud tires for Floating Drill through the mud doldrums at the turn off to the main road.

At the beginning you'll be relying on the Fleetstar at first (it's sitting next to the garage), Paystar when you can afford it, and back to Fleetstar when it gets off-road tires. Fleetstar has better center of gravity so it takes off past the Paystar when you can outfit it for offroading. The Paystar default loadout is decent at off roading so there's a bit of time it's better but by God it's tippy.

Won't spoil much past that besides if you explore a bit you can pick up some heavy trucks that are useful for heavy truck things but also for selling and buying a different heavy truck if you'd like.

I think I'd play more Derail Valley if there was some ease of use upgrade to set switches from the maps. Travelling and setting switches is fine but station navigation especially during shunting just gets frustrating when you end up a train length away from the switch you need and teleporting like a maniac to it takes me out of the experience.

I guess the answer is stop taking shunting but I'd also be more into shipping missions if they included loading and offloading.

Side note somebody suggested Stormworks weeks ago and it's been my jam lately. It's a good "one of those" where I've never been able to get into Space Engineers because space ships in a void and the terrestrial options have been quixotic or badly physiced. Adding damage modeling to Stormworks isnt a simple fork. The only reason you can model a Type VII sub and still get 45 fps instead of 4.5 fps is the whole thing is baked together (mostly). IIRC there's some simple HP systems going on that let your hull get punctured and sink if you run into something too hard. But the only reason it works as well as it does is because they aren't bogged down in voxel sim of every component.

E. Looking at what Gcombat actually is and I guess the bar isn't set very high if that's all you want. Just joust your boats

More thinking reflex because everyone's first thought when wanting to add combat is "why is this not space engineers" and the above applies to that.
