Classicaloid is an original anime directed by Yoichi Fujita (Gintama, Osomatsu-san) with scripts from Miya Asakawa (Polar Bear Cafe), Shu Matsubara (Osomatsu-san), and others. It's billed as a "musical action-comedy" and features remixes of classical music. Each composer is assigned one modern producer to remix their pieces. New episodes air Saturdays at 4:00am PDT/11:00am GMT on Crunchyroll.

Synopsis:

quote:

High school students Kanae and Sōsuke live in a provincial town that is trying to revitalize itself with music. One day, suddenly "Classicaloid" versions of Beethoven and Mozart appear in front of Kanae and Sōsuke. When the suspicious-looking Classicaloids play music they call "mujik," it has a strange power: stars start to fall, and giant robots appear. Now every day is tumultuous. Eventually, more Classicaloids start to appear such as Bach, Chopin, and Schubert. (source: ANN)

Main Cast:

quote:

Sosuke (Nobunaga Shimazaki), Mozart (Yuuki Kaji), Beethoven (Tomokazu Sugita), Kanae (Mikako Komatsu), a shoebill (???)

I'm the lead trumpet player, playing loud and high is all I know how to do.

The ridiculous amount of musical references, both visual and audible, far surpasses my imagination and expectation. The music score and remixes are fantastic. Like holy poo poo, the OP, that flamenco remix of the 9th Symphony, this is brilliant and absurd. And I'm only 6 minutes in.

As I see it, the main question to ask yourself before you watch this is "Am I a classical music fan with a particular interest in 18th and 19th century European dead white guys y/n?" If your answer is "yyyyy" (like mine is), this is FANTASTIC. If your answer is "yeah well I kind of like classical music I guess" then this is still pretty good. If you say "Ludwig lol what a stupid name" then keep on walkin'.

First episode was fun as hell. And it looks like Bach and his idol henchwomen are the antagonists? Wild.

2nd episode was fun. Mozart being a pervert is pretty accurate. I'm more excited for the next few composers now that we got the big names outta the way.

I had to look up who Badarzewska was. I'm weak on Polish composers, it seems. Tchaikovsky being female does make some sense since the real article was gay. Still wondering about Liszt though.

I like how Bach is apparently the godfather of the Classicaloid mafia.

Can anyone suss out any reason they made Beethoven so obsessed with gyoza ...? Dude apparently tried cooking once after firing his housekeeper and was so bad at it that he rehired her the next day. Unless I'm missing something he wasn't that into cooking.

Chaiko-chan the pop idol is the best goddam thing though

That could very well be the joke. He's not exactly having a lot of successes.

Also, I can imagine the writer(s) discussing what sort of utterly mundane food would be funniest to be utterly passionate about (and to scream the name of when failed). GYOOOOZAAAA

No, you're right, I was just trying (poorly) to figure out the writers' thought process.

The first ep has so much good stuff going for it but I hated how there was like zero empathy for the main girl from the other three guys. Not even a "drat dude that sucks", just "oh no what's gonna happen to my stuff???"

I'm normally okay with rear end in a top hat characters if it looks like they'll get some comeuppance but all three of them take her for granted and it's just a matter of course I guess?

k4kk01

Third episode was really good- Liszt and Chopin were both great. I really appreciate that we're getting some characters who are at least not as overtly rear end in a top hat-ish.

Also, the way Liszt being a woman is addressed is pretty amazing: Mozart is jealous, and she basically says 'who cares' when asked about it

Overall, really appreciating the humor in this show & excited to see it continue! I'm a little worried about the expanding cast, but so far they've handled the characters well, and no one's seemed neglected so far.

Well, eventually they'll run out of dead classical composers that people actually have heard of.

russia has such a deep pool of classical composers they could go for 10 more seasons

i'll reveal my power level here and say that i hadn't heard of Badarzewska before this anime, so it's already gotten to that point for me. :v:
anyway i'm glad that the cast is broadening, though i would like them to let things rest a bit after Schubert shows up next week (which looks to be hilarious). this week's ep also had probably the first remix i actually liked (Nocturne no.2)

Agreeing with basically all of this. I'm pretty sure they won't just indefinitely/infinitely expand the cast. They wouldn't, right ...? Haha. I'm really looking forward to seeing where this show goes! It's goofy as hell and the humor hits just right for me. Hikikomori Chopin ... :allears:

I've liked the previous remixes a lot, though. Definitely a high point of the show IMO.

this week's episode was absolutely amazing. great sense of schubert's character, great comedy, some of the best animation so far, and we even got a reveal of what's really up with the classicaloids! i would've liked to see how schubert interacted with the cast, but the punchline of his last minute failure setting him back even further was too good to pass up. i'm sure he'll join everyone eventually...

it seems weird to feel like we're heading to a climax only 1/5 of the way through, but i won't complain. it entertains me to no end that Bach actually does just speak in musical directions, which his lackeys have to interpret. :allears:

I don't know. There might be a chance but there might also be a bit of Der Erlkönig given next episode is seeming to be a bit Schubert-centered now that he's officially a tenant...

That said, I had fun with this episode capping the slow burn the series seems be doing to catch my interest by making call-backs to all the initial Musik from the gang, even when it's clear that too many Conductors send the Orchestra into disarray...

i didn't know Mozart composed for Ali Project, lol

this felt like a weaker episode, if only because it couldn't really reconcile the different tones (and why were Clasky & Klasky in it?). i'm not sure having the deer be alive at the end was a particularly great choice either. but at least the Motes/Shuu rivalry is entertaining, and Motes' mujik/the resulting confessions of worthlessness were good.
