Well, fuck. Really?
Ordos Xeno Inquisitor Lucas Gideon tucks his hands into the small of his back, looking out over the crew of his strike cruiser, Purgation of Hope. He and another member of the Ordos had long discussed plans for a mobile watch station of the Deathwatch, and with his ally's help, their dream had become reality. Now, with a specially fitted vessel intended for rapid deployment, he and the marines under his command can react with due haste to any xenos incursion.

Lucas glances over as one of the Inquisitorial officers tries to get his attention, and the man smiles wryly. It was time to put the cruiser to the test.

--

Within minutes, the ship begins preparations for warp travel, and a call is sent out for all active marines to report to a briefing room near the center of the ship; the marine crew is small, but varied, ranging from an Ultramarine who has spent his life fighting the Tyranids to a Blood Angels successor hungry for the meat of his foes, and on down to a troubled Black Shield who has forsaken his chapter to devote the remainder of his duties to the Deathwatch.

All in all, only eight marines are aboard the Purgation, but the Inquisitors believe that is all that will be necessary to prove the viability of the vessel and its missions. They are roused from their chambers, each one receiving a message on a video screen to make ready for war.

The intended target? Orks.

Welcome to an episodic Deathwatch where we'll be doing poo poo in missions rather than having an overarching campaign.

Please feel free to make your way to the briefing way and post your character sheet.

Tormagoden, the Eviscerator

When the inquisitor's message crackles through on the training room's screen, Tormagoden is so pleased that he refrains from messily dismembering his current servitor opponent like he has the last five. Instead, he swiftly removes the two cybernetic combat from the sad thing, to no surprise on the part of the long-suffering tech adepts in charge of maintenance.

After only a small detour to grab something grox-leg shaped and steaming from the galley, he clomps into the briefing chamber with his customary out-of-battle clumsiness and tosses the rag he was using to get the grease off his gauntlets in the general direction of a crewman.

"Inquisitor! You finally found something worth our time? Even if it is greenskins..."

Brother Marcus of the Ultramarines

Marcus begins the rites necessary to don his Power Armour. The Mk.7 suit has done him well ever since his ascension from the 10th Company. Orks, Orks were his first taste of battle as a Scout of the 10th company and as a Devastator Marine of the 9th company. He would face them again in the 8th company as Assault Marine and finally as he made his way to the 7th company as a Tactical Marine. Orks were never to be underestimated but they were a manageable threat, so long as they weren't allowed to mass. One stratagem comes to Marcus's mind in particular, as he dons his Helmet. Decapitate the command structure and the greenskins would fight amongst themselves without the largest to control them. Similar to the Synapse creatures of the Tyranids only the core behavior was different. An Ork lives for war and to fight, any opponent including an ork and frequently other orks are good enough. A tyranid lives to consume and Tyranids don't consume other tyranids except to recycle biomass. Too much time spent thinking of the wrong Xenos for the mission, refocus. Codex Astartes says that the Tactical Marine shall be steeped in the lore of battle and schooled in all manner of weapons and strategy. Marcus begins walking towards the briefing room, still focused on the thoughts in his head.

Strategy against orks? Weapons: Metal Storm Rounds for the bolters to annihilate groups of orks, Leaper Mines to kill them as they follow us, Flamers to burn the ground where they've fallen to eliminate the spores. Tactics: Ambush at range and close assault if they are weak or running firefight until we can annihilate them. Never face the Orks in a group up close if you can avoid it, why give the Xenos a fair fight? They are atrocious at range, volume of fire their only saving grace.

Kill-Team Composition: We are melee heavy, especially with the Flesh Tearer and Black Templar Chaplain. Use them as a 2 man assault element. Decius, Marvolo, Odyerus, Sindri, and I should equip ourselves with Metal-Storm rounds to deal with hordes of orks at range. IDEA: Tell the Assault Marines to drop Leaper Mines into the enemy formations like little bomblets before dropping for the assault.

Marcus rounds the corner to the Briefing Chamber and steps in, Heraldry scroll hanging just below the Aquila on his breastplate. "Quickly, tell us of this new mission. It's time to kill.

Vicissitude
Jan 26, 2004

You ever do the chicken dance at a wake? That really bothers people.
Marvolo

As befits one who is given the honor of maintaining the blessed equipment of the Deathwatch, Brother Marvolo is in the armory, such as it is, when word comes from the Inquisitor. The cruiser and its like are favored by the Holy Inquisition. Small, speedy, stealthy, and other words beginning with an S. 'Sinister' comes to mind, or would if Marvolo hadn't known better. Though the majority of humanity views the Inquisition with fear and distrust, the Astartes know better. The shadowy branches of the Imperium's investigative ordos perform necessary tasks that are as important, or in some cases far more important than those the marines are called upon to perform.

Marvolo knows he's going to have to come to terms with his armor later. Ancient and potent though it is, the adamantine and ceramite have their own quirks that often reveal themselves at times. The techmarine would swear, if it wasn't tech-heresy to even think it, that it has a will of its own. But such thinking is foolishness itself. Thinking machines had been purged from the Imperium millennia past. But whatever the reason, the servos seem to be outperforming themselves lately. He should be thankful that the Emperor deems it a worthy gift for the tasks to come. Strength will be needed, it seems, and the Emperor provides.

Laying aside his tools, Marvolo cleans his hands in the basin of the Omnissiah. The sacred oils coat them in a filmy sheen so he might take the blessing forward into all his works. The oils seep within the joints of his artificial hand and he is thankful for the Machine Lord's benediction as well. He intones a brief prayer of thanks before once more donning his robes and heading to meet with the rest of the squad for their briefing.

Decius, White Consuls. Third Company Tactical Marine, Former Proconsul, serving as Deathwatch Devastator Marine

When the call comes in, Decius is spending his day like he has spent most of them since being put aboard this cruiser, half of them practicing with heavy weapons on the ship's range, and the other half in prayer. He is doing the later when the call comes in. He finishes his "Hail Celestial" and gets up, blowing out his candles and hurriedly putting on his dress uniform. Like their parent chapter, the White Consuls do maintain a protectorate, and anyone looking to advance in rank must spend some time on one of the worlds acting as a Proconsul leading some of the PDF and Decius is no exception. As such, Decius has clothing to wear other than his power armor or a simple sash.

As he makes his way to the briefing room, Decius spends some time ruminating on the current situation. For the Deathwatch to have a secret archeotech strike cruiser that they are going to send all over the Imperium is actually quite exciting, though he is a bit disappointed at the fact that their first foe were to be orks. Dangerous to be sure, but he never thought the greenskins as being a threat that would require the Deathwatch. Orks are some of humanity's oldest foes, and many doctrines had been developed to fight them.

Decius cuts his thoughts short as he enters the briefing room. He smooths over his uniform and then stands at attention.

Today I'm... amped up!

Brother Odyerus

He stood on the deck of the Strike Cruiser, taking in the activity. Even though the ship had unprecedented levels of automation, it still needed a bridge crew to help direct and run the ship. Periodically, Brother Odyerus offered advice and lent a hand to the proceedings. It felt good to be on a Strike Cruiser again - it reminded him of his time on one during the Damocles Gulf Crusade, where he piloted a Caestus Assault Ram right into an Emissary-class vessel. The surprise on the Tau's face as the ship disgorged a full squad of Marines Errant who began tearing through the defenders was priceless. Nevertheless, being on a Strike Cruiser was undoubtedly a change of pace from one of House Ecale's Gothic-class Cruisers, The Honourable Merchant. Here, his sparse quarters were expected, nay celebrated. On The Honourable Merchant, they had to make special exceptions for both his frame and his austerity when it came to his chambers. Regardless, Odyerus allowed himself a few creature comforts. Mounted on his wall was the back-banner he used when leading the ratings on boarding parties, or when attending the Rogue Trader's 'state' dinners. It was as lavish as one would expect for a gift from a Rogue Trader, combining both the features of the Marines Errant's and House Ecale's heraldry. Affixed to his armor though, above even the insignia noting other brothers of his service with House Ecale, were his Crusader Medallions awarded to him by both a Lord Admiral and his Chapter Master. These meant something to him.

Already armored, Marines Errant did not tend to leave their Power Armor except to rest. The vagaries of near-constant travel, much of it through the Warp, meant that they had to be ready for anything. Prowling the decks wearing a uniform was a death sentence if the Gellar Field failed, or an unexpected tide of Greenskins emerged. Their odd methods of reproduction often meant that they left their spores in odd places, including in-between deck plates where they might have time to mature before discovery. Constant vigilance was the only real proven method for fighting off them under these conditions. One might think that he would have a uniform from his time with House Ecale, but this was not the truth. The point of having Marines Errant on your ship was so that other people you dealt with knew you had a Space Marine on your ship. It's true that Rogue Traders often reveled in subtlety, but Space Marines are a rare gift not meant to be squandered.

Upon receiving the summons, Odyerus noted with good fortune that he was close to the briefing room already. The target? Orks. Clapping the nearest deck officer on the back, he took his leave and transferred his authority to the officer. Walking towards the room, he loaded his Welcoming Committee with anticipation. Given their proclivity for melee assaults, he knew that he would need to be able to give the Orks a warm welcome indeed.

Ignorance, the root of all evil
Sindri

Sindri is practising deep in the bowels of the ship when the call comes. With only eight marines aboard there is little opportunity for sparring, so the Space Wolf instead has been using various heavy equipment in a makeshift training regimen. When the Inquisitor's call reaches him, he jogs back to his quarters, where his thralls quickly and efficiently affix his armour. It doesn't take long for Sindri to be on his way to the briefing room.

Entering the room, Sindri looks around to see that not all of the squad are there yet. He greets those who are there heartily, as though they were his own pack. "Brothers! I look forward to doing battle with you all, and afterwards we will celebrate!" The Inquisitor receives a much more subdued, yet respectful, greeting.

Chaplain Gerharrt

When the call arrives, Gerharrt is already armored and deep in prayer in his quarters behind the ship's chapel. The chapel was much more humble than the great Reclusiams of the Watch Fortresses, but the decor was secondary to the purpose. The time had come; finishing his prayer, he reverently lifts his Crozius from his personal altar and places it at his side, then dons his Rosarius and leering skull-helm. He preferred not to be seen out of his full Chaplain's regalia, regardless of whether or not combat was near. His icons of office and tools of war were one and the same, after all.

Arriving in the briefing chamber several minutes later, he gives the gathered Marines and Inquisitors a respectful nod and takes his place off to one side. Soon, he thought with grim satisfaction, they would be wetting the soil of another world with Ork blood. Some Marines considered Orks beneath their notice, but he knew that they were not to be underestimated. A Warboss was a cunning and powerful warrior, and the teeming vermin that followed him could drown a Space Marine squad in sheer numbers, even if they were individually insignificant. Killing them was a pleasure.

Well, fuck. Really?
The final marine to arrive is the Black Shield, his helmet hiding his expression; the only thing to set him apart from the others, short of the lack of any chapter heraldry, is his right arm is clad completely in silver. He keeps his head down, avoiding the gaze of the others marine to the best of his ability, and takes a position as far from Marcus and the Ultramarine successors as possible. Lord Gideon stands, brushing his cloak behind him; out of his Inquisitorial power armor, he is a rail thin man who almost borders on sickly in his appearance. His long black hair is tied back behind his head, and his gaze lingers on the Black Shield for a moment before he speaks.

"Emperor bless his sons this day; as you all know, the Imperium needs your expertise in defense against the green tide. I am sure some of you believe the ork to be a simple xeno, beneath your notice, but I assure you, this is not the case." He turns to screen behind him, which begins to display shaky footage from what looks like a forge world; the clip starts partway in, as a guardsman is giving what sounds like a fairly standard report. The camera view drifts and dips slightly, until the guardsman behind the camera is reprimanded.

Suddenly, the lighting dims considerably, and the guardsman giving his report curses and looks up, and for a moment he stands there, slack-jawed, before the clipboard in his hand falls to the ground. The cameraman pans his camera up and a heretical expletive is uttered by the guardsman; the camera focuses in and out for a moment until finally the image of an Ork Krooza fills the screen. Within moments, explosions begin to pepper the side of the krooza, but the air fills with the orkish battlecry as bursts of flame erupt from the side of the vessel, followed by streams of orks on makeshift jump packs. The cameraman drops his camera and steps into view, firing wildly into the air with a las-pistol, before he is literally crushed by the body of a falling ork.

Lucas turns back to the marines with raised eyebrows. "We intercepted this footage as part of an all-channel distress call from the forge world of Cassius Prime. We have been able to suppress it to prevent widespread panic within the sector, but we have been given a double-edged sword here; the orks refuse to move. With these, they cannot raid other worlds, but we risk them digging in like ticks on a grox. Cassius Prime primarily outputs battery packs for the Guard, but there has been effort to repurpose it towards the creation of ceramite armor plates for Astartes and Guard armor."

Gideon tucks his hands behind his back. "We understand from reports on the ground that the cruiser seems to be personal vessel of an ork mek, known as the Mad Mek Orkimedes, who seems to have split off from his warboss; we assume he is raiding the planet for materials to make more of the idiotic contraptions the orks are known for. However, we know the mek rarely leaves his lab aboard the cruiser; as is the case, you will be delivered via Thunderhawk to board the vessel and seek out the mek."

He gestures towards the Black Shield. "Brother Julius, due to his history, will be deployed separate from the rest of you to aide in the planetary defense and to oversee PDF and Guard troops until the mission is cleared; a marine of his caliber should be able to aide our soldiers on his own. The rest of you, we're hoping the majority of the orks will be tied up on the ground, but DO expect heavy resistance."

The Inquisitor pauses. "I assume the lot of you will have questions, or want to plan. By all means."

You ever do the chicken dance at a wake? That really bothers people.
Marvolo

"Hmm, typically the suicidal boldness you expect from the greenskins. Still, bringing a cruiser into planetary atmosphere like that is out of the ordinary for them. All too often they just drop those internal asteroid transports they use onto a planet and whatever orks survive will charge out ready for battle. This Orkimedes must have some sort of plan if he's keeping the ship as a base of operations on the planet. That will make assaulting it more onerous, but nothing we cannot overcome."

The thought of disgracing the blessed equipment of the Astartes by interfacing with the perverted tech-abominations of the orks, as he'll no doubt be forced to do, angers Marvolo. But they have a job to do aboard that ship and it is their duty to the Emperor to see it done. There are many ugly jobs to do in this galaxy, but it's all for the greater good.

Royalty is a continuous cutting motion

Tormagoden, the Eviscerator

The Flesh Tearer snorts. "That's it? Orks, who won't even run away? This isn't a mission, it's a drill. We board the ship, kill everything that moves, crash it into the biggest patch of green we can see, and let the mortals clean up."

As he stomps off to the armory, he calls an afterthought over his shoulder. "Unless there's some stupid reason we can't." Then he stops and looks at the Inquisitor. "There's some stupid reason, isn't there?"

man, Tormagoden isn't gonna stress 'bout no orks

Brother Marcus of the Ultramarines
"I'm going to guess simply inserting into the Ork Krooza, blowing the Plasma reactor up, and getting out in the nick of time would be too much collateral damage for our purposes? Tell us any intelligence you have on the types of orks we expect to find on that ship so we can best equip ourselves to kill them. Shipboard work calls for flamers, explosives, and the odd lascutter. Leaper mines too, lots of leaper mines to cover our escape after we take out the primary."

Decius, White Consuls. Third Company Tactical Marine, Former Proconsul, serving as Deathwatch Devastator Marine

Decius might not think to highly of their target, but he wasn't going to be as dismissive of it as the Flesh Tearer was. They were Deathwatch and Orks were Xenos so this was in the mission parameters after all. He spends a moment thinking before speaking, "I agree with the tactical assessment; a horde-like enemy such as the Orks calls for either rapid fire weaponry or flamers, with some stronger single target weapons like power blades or meltas for the larger ork specimens. Since we are not in space we would not have to worry about the enemy opening the ship to the void to put out fires, or us. Our infiltration will be by Thunderhawk, but will that also be our method of extraction? Knowing how we are to get out will impact how we can plan for our mission, as well as the question as to if we can just blow the ship up."

Chaplain Gerharrt

Gerharrt remains silent and motionless throughout the briefing. Afterwards, he spends a few moments in silent consideration before asking the only question that comes to mind.

"Clarify one thing, Inquisitor: does the Ork vessel remain in the air, or has it landed, or more likely crash-landed? The Orks hardly distinguish between the two."

Today I'm... amped up!

Odyerus

Chuckling to himself over the Flesh Tearer's... enthusiasm (for a moment he considered bluster, but then he remembered that Flesh Tearers are all-too-pleased to back up words with the roaring rattle of a chainsword), Odyerus considered the briefing.

"What other assets are available to us aside from the Thunderhawk? It's fine if that and our wargear is all we have, but I'm genuinely curious to see if there's anything else we can work with. Also, what do you see as the major and minor objectives of our raid?"

He then turns to the rest of the group.

"Even if bound by gravity, boarding a ship is always an exciting occasion. For your weapons, range shouldn't be a concern - aside from some chapels and Rogue Trader's bridges, there really aren't too many long corridors. Then again, Ork ships are always a bit of a crapshoot in their layout. Personally, I would recommend taking an assault shotgun and a power weapon - it's very difficult to dodge a hail of buckshot in a narrow corridor, especially on full-auto, and a power weapon should be able to handle just about any melee weapon the Orks have. If you have the space, I agree that a flamer should also work wonders."

Ignorance, the root of all evil
Sindri

"I agree with Odyerus," Sindri says, "to a degree. We will have a better chance of success if we hit hard and fast. It will sow confusion amongst the orks, making it difficult for them to rally and slow us down. If we are not slowed down, our prey will have less of an opportunity to escape. An assault approach will necessitate close quarters weapons."

Well, fuck. Really?
Lucas shakes his head at the Flesh Tearer. "Most of that plan will work fine, however, crashing a full sized 'krooza' into a forge world is a nightmarish scenario. The last thing we need is an ork incursion ten years down the line from within the bowels of a manufactorum. No, we will need to either crash it into the nearby moon, or send it out into a random part of space." He gives the tech-marine a nod. "There is some larger plan here, of course, which is frightening in and of itself. The mad mek wants something from the planet beyond a simple raid."

"With that said, yes, it still remains airborne. You will exit as you arrived; via Thunderhawk. In atmos we will deliver you via jump pack from a Thunderhawk, and afterwards, once it is in space and on a course away from the planet, we will extract you in the same method; however, whether it will be a scoop up or an actual landing remains to be seen."

Gideon pulls out a dataslate and taps at it for a moment. "You will have access to your mission objectives shortly. The armory is open, limited as it is this early in our work. Emperor with you."

Brother Marcus of the Ultramarines
"Might I propose a modification to the mission parameters Inquisitor. Here allow me, I think you'll find it accomplishes the Ordo Xenos's goals and is much more simple." The Space Marine takes power armoured fingers to dataslate and fat fingers the touchscreen till he gets it to say what he wants. It comes out something like this.

pre:
PROPOSED MODIFICATION TO MISSION ORDER

OBJECTIVE CLASSIFICATION PRIMARIS:
*Remove Ork Vessel from its position above the manufactorum to a minimum safe distance, then ensure its complete and utter destruction.
- Meltabombs set in accordance with Forge Master Marvolo's specifications should trigger a wildcat reaction in the ork generatorium and annihilate ship and crew utterly.
- Radioactive fallout should ensure the orks will not be able to spawn on the land below should a handful escape the ship.
- Much faster to accomplish than getting the ship to orbit again. Destruction of the ship in Atmos should inspire Imperial Guard assets to go on the offensive and purge the xenos from this world.

OBJECTIVE CLASSIFICATION SECUNDUM:
*Extract Mad Mek Orkimedes alive before the Krooza's destruction.
- We are going to kill everything on that Emperor Damned ship, there's no point in specifically ensuring it dies if we know it is onboard.
- Inhalation Grenades with the strongest knockgas we have aboard the ship should be sufficient to ensure a live capture. (Requistion Value: Null)

OBJECTIVE CLASSIFICATION TERTIARIUS:
*Discover the mad mek's plans.
- Kill the alien before it can speak its lies or in this case have to listen to its guttural bullshit. We will bring the target to you to be interrogated and to determine the truth.
*Secure Thunderhawk Extraction Zone via a fighta-bomba launch bay
- We can bring an Imperial Guard Heavy Weapons Company aboard with us to help the Thunderhawk weapons compliment. That level of firepower should hold back the Ork long enough for us
to accomplish our mission. Including a Reserve Company or two could also ensure the orks have enough targets to pick from that the Heavy Bolter teams won't simply be shot up.
(40-65 req total, prefer if it is split amongst the squad)
- We would also ensure they can be extracted alongside us via Valkyrie transports before the Ork Krooza explodes.
Marcus then makes his way to the armory to make his requisitions for the mission as well as coordinate acquisition of that reserve company should the other brothers approve of his battle plan.

pre:
Requisition List:
Clip of Metalstorm Rounds (Free)
Balefire Flamer with Backpack Ammo Supply 16
2 Melta Bombs 24
Requisition of a Imperial Guard Reserve Company 15

Finally he goes to Chaplain Gerharrt with Bolter in hand Metal Storm rounds pre-loaded alongside regular ammunition in the fire-selector. "You might be able to make use of this on our mission. I have enough equipment to carry that I can't seem to find a place on my Armour where I can readily reach the weapon in battle. Better I think to give it to a Brother who may need it." He does the whole ceremonial Ultramarine deal in presenting his holy, emperor issued, bolter to another.

Gerharrt nods, pleased that the squad was already willing to put aside Chapter differences. "I would be honored, Brother Marcus. I will add a few kill marks to it for you. And I approve of your plan, although the Inquisitor will have the last say."

With close-quarters fighting in mind, especially against targets as tough as Orks, the Chaplain picks up a power axe from the armory. Its brutal force would complement his Crozius's flawless balance. A flamer and a laser sight for the bolter would also be useful; even by Black Templar standards, the Chaplain had always preferred to close in to melee as quickly as possible, and his marksmanship had suffered as a result.

EC Astartes Power Axe-30
Astartes Flamer-10

Lord Inquisitor Lucas Gideon gives the Ultramarine a hard stare. "No."

"You have your mission objectives, and how you go about them is a matter I leave in your hands, but Inquisitorial records will be updated with your methods, not the other way around. You will also do this as Astartes alone; do you not think we would have guardsmen on the ship already if we had them to spare? There is no such thing as a 'reserve' company of the guard." He sniffs, shaking his head and pointing at the tactical marine.

"This is Deathwatch, Marcus. You will remember that you are the Imperium's ace in the hole against the threat of the alien, and called in only when all other efforts have been exhausted or deemed too costly. Had I wanted you to lead the PDF and the Guard against the horde of orks, I would have put you on the ground in Julius' place, or left you to some death world. You are all dismissed. Gather what gear you feel necessary, select your leader, and perform your oaths. We will arrive within the hour." He throws his cloak out behind him and walks out, letting the door slide shut behind him.

I say we attempt extraction of Orkimedes after an onsite interrogation but if we cannot, kill it, kill the greenskin. It just occured to me that Inhalation Grenades are not likely to work, depending on how augmented the target is. I'm open to suggestions on how to incapacitate the ork in close combat. Probably hit it with a Concussion Grenade or two to stun it and inject it repeatedly with Deadlock toxin to paralyze the ork. Let us also see if we got a teleport homer on the ship so we can skip the Thunderhawk extraction and just get out clean. Make sure someone brings meltabombs as well for the generatorium."

Decius, White Consuls. Third Company Tactical Marine, Former Proconsul, serving as Deathwatch Devastator Marine

Decius remains mostly quient as the Inquisitor answers their questions and while Marcus goes about annotating his plans. The White Consul spends most of his time reviewing the equipment available for the mission. His Heavy bolter was a given, especially in dealing with Ork hordes. A heavy flamer would also be of use, though a missile launcher with Krak and frag rounds would be versitile, allowing for destruction of the greenskin horde as well as any hardened targets like ork walkers or truks. He considers a power weapon, but ultimately decides against it. His Last Resort should do rather well against anything getting too close no bigger than a Nob, and there were enough assault specialists in the group that they should be able to keep their Devastator clear.

Decius does spend some time wrestling with how to bring down his backpack ammo supply, as he cannot wear both it and a jump pack. He decides he could likely carry the pack down with him during the descent, and then with assistance of one of the others get the pack quickly mounted and attached to his bolter. Not ideal, but the only other plan would be for someone to carry him down. Then it dawns on him that the manifest lists a grav chutes, which solves the problem of the ammo supply.

Decius looks up as Marcus is completing his annotations and discussing bringing a guard regiment when the Inquisitor lays into the Ultramarine. Decius can only look down at his equipment dataslate to hide the look of embarrassment and shade of shame on his face. he quickly finishes his gear selection and then slips out to get into his armor. Once he is dressed he meets up with the squad to discuss preparations.

"Okay, so most of us are returning Deathwatch or have been here a few years, so we know how this works. I will start the nomination process. I nominate Either Marcus or Odyerus to lead our squad. Marcus has experience fighting Tyranids, which can translate to fighting the horde like Greenskins. On the other hand, what we are engaging in is essentially a boarding action, and I believe since Odyerus is from a fleet based chapter, he will be experienced in leading boarding actions."

Still shaking with a residue of silent mirth at the sheer size of the stick the Ultramarine must have sat on, the Flesh Tearer manages to choke out something resembling a vote. "Ho ho ha! I vote for the one who didn't try to impress the teacher!"

Finally banishing his laughter with a sigh, he continues. "Do not worry, brother. They cannot run from us in the hallways! And if they do, we can make a shorter one than they are using!"

Rubbing his chin in what appears to be intense thought, he ventures a plan. "I say, we point it at the sun and blow up the controls. Or the whole bridge! After we kill everything, of course. It's the only way to be sure." As he strolls out, cracking his thick neck, he calls over his shoulder: "Let's go have some fun!"

You ever do the chicken dance at a wake? That really bothers people.
Marvolo

Marvolo is quietly pleased that that Guard will not be a part of the boarding action. This is the sort of action that the Astartes are best equipped to handle, not the merely human forces of the Imperium. Close quarters of course means melee and fire so that's what the forge master decides on. A potent flame weapon will clear the corridors of the cruiser and whatever is left can feel the blade of his axe as he finishes them off. Still, integration with the blasphemous xenotech might be unavoidable. He decides to look into whatever tools he can to aid him in that necessary task.

"Odyerus is my choice for squad leader as well. I do not know him well, but I feel his leadership shall be invaluable in this mission, given the parameters."

Once more, he quietly considers what might happen if the would-be sergeant does not measure up to his chapter's teachings.

Odyerus

Looking at the rest of the team, he nods solemnly.

"Very well. I accept this responsibility from the team. With regards to the oath that we shall swear before the mission... Since this is our first mission together as a team, why don't we make it one for the Deathwatch history books? Let us inaugurate both our team and this cruiser and swear an Oath of Glory in memory of our Chapter heroes, both current and past, as well as in the name of the Emperor!"

Thinking about the primary mission parameters, Odyerus then states.

"It's a bit tricky, isn't it? We'll need to find a way to commandeer the vessel and get it out of the atmosphere. Ideally, we'll disable it after that - the Strike Cruiser should be able to make short work of a crippled Ork vessel with minimal casualties. In terms of boarding, I can help pilot or direct the Thunderhawk to where I think the best entry point will be. As for the rest of the mission... Capturing him would make figuring out his plans a lot easier, but I think we're all of one mind - if capturing him risks a Battle-brother, we eliminate him instead. There's bound to be other ways to figure out what his plans are."

He looks at the rest of the team. "Any other thoughts about our mission? If not let's swear our oath, proceed to the Thunderhawk, and we'll get this operation started."

Choosing Oath of Glory. We're skilled badasses, but a little lacking on the renown front. Besides, we're boarding a ship. Assault actions, rather than defensive ones, are going to be what carries the day. Although I suspect we will probably need to hold a point or two depending on how we decide to remove the ship from the atmosphere... My Chapter Attack Pattern might actually be quite beneficial from both an attack and defense perspective.

Let him be the least of your concerns, and pay his attitude no mind." The black shield claps the Ultramarine on the shoulder and chuckles, the laughter distorted through his helmet vox.

"I am known now as Brother Julius, and I wish I had the honor of joining the rest of you aboard the cruiser. I will do my part from the ground, and for all that it matters, I throw my support in with your choice of squad leader. Though the Inquisitor did not mention it, I assume we will have a channel of communication, if only to ensure that there are no surprises to either team." He rests his hand on the pommel of his sword, thinking for a moment before turning his head to Odyerus.

Well, fuck. Really?
The marines gather what equipment is available to them and make their way to the hangar, where their Thunderhawk awaits. Odyerus, chosen practically unanimously, gathers his battle brothers before him, kneeling with him as he raises his voice to the Emperor, promising glory to his name, to his brothers and their chapters, and to the Imperium itself. Gideon emerges from the Thunderhawk as their oath is completed, and the man makes the sign of the Aquila. "We bring justice by sword, by shell, by flame. In his name, suffer not the alien to live."

With that done, the Inquisitor gives the marines a once over and nods, tucking his hands into the small of his back. "We will soon be arriving above the forge world. I care not how you accomplish your goal, only that you DO accomplish it, without damage to our factories. I would wish you luck, but you are Astartes. The Emperor himself watches over you, and you WILL succeed." He nods curtly before moving away from the loading ramp of the Thunderhawk, brushing his hair back. "Glory to the Emperor!"

---

It does not take long for the eight marines to pack themselves in, with Brother Julius taking to the front to pilot the craft. "I will bring you in close enough to make the jump without drawing attention to the Thunderhawk, after which I will take to the ground to aide the guard planetside. I will take the cruiser turning back to orbit as a sign to bring the Thunderhawk back after you, lest you tell me otherwise." He gently pulls back on the flight controls as the Thunderhawk begins to lift from the floor of the hangar, and slowly eases it out into the black abyss of the void.

Several minutes pass before the Thunderhawk begins to quake from entering atmosphere, flames licking at the windows and along the sides of the vessel; before too long, it pierces through the clouds of the upper atmosphere, revealing the terrible sight of the Ork krooza sitting several thousand feet above the surface of the planet, blocking the view of the factories below. The makeshift spaceship seems to be lazily bombarding the city below seemingly at random, and Julius flips a switch over his head. "No lock on detected as of yet, brothers. I am bringing us in. Prepare to disembark."

But as the Thunderhawk draws closer to the krooza, one of the main turrets begins to turn. An alarm blares from the cockpit, and there is a faint thud as something strikes the hull of the Thunderhawk. A moment later, there are numerous more thuds as well as a shrieking sound that starts out loud and then dies away. Brother Julius seems confused at first, until a gretchin slams into the reinforced window of the Thunderhawk with a hideous splat, before simply sliding off and into the air.

"Brother Sergeant, the orks seem to be firing their gretchin at us. It isn't doing much to the ship, but it may be a concern on your descent. What are your orders? Should I bring us in closer or will this distance work?"

The Chaplain shakes his head and stands. No plan survived contact with the enemy. Besides, although his status as a Chaplain had given him perspective on the viewpoints of many chapters, mellowing his Black Templar intolerance in the process, he still believed the Templars knew the true way to wage war: fury, speed, and brutal hand-to-hand combat.

"That damned Flesh Tearer has all the disrespect and brash enthusiasm of a fresh Neophyte. It vexes... and yet we can learn from it, all the same. Besides: let it never be said that we let a Brother face the enemy alone! FOR THE EMPEROR!"

With that, he turns and leaps from the craft, drawing his weapons as he falls. His voice crackles to life over the squad vox a second later.

"The arrival of Assault Marines in their midst will draw the Orks' attention away from you. The fool xenos cannot resist throwing themselves onto our blades. Brother Julius, I suggest you take this opportunity to bring in those of us who lack jump packs."

Can I use Litany of Hate over the vox on the way down? I think I should be allowed under the "that's loving badass" clause.

"I would greatly appreciate it, Brother Julius. Mighty as our equipment is, I'm afraid my own wargear makes me too heavy to descend as delicately as the others. But no matter. I shall be your rock against the oncoming tide, brothers."

It's not an idle boast, either. Marvolo has weathered torrents of fire that left the surrounding terrain devastated. Truly the ancient wrights knew how to create exquisite armor during their golden age at the Emperor's side. The fact that much of his internal organs had been replaced or upgraded with much sturdier bionics also helps mitigate long-term damage to the techmarine's body, of course.

Decius, White Consuls. Third Company Tactical Marine, Former Proconsul, serving as Deathwatch Devastator Marine

Decius spends most of the flight in silent prayer. Decius always found it strange; somewhere along the line from the end of the Horus Heresy and the second founding and now the White Consuls took up the practice of Emperor worship. Decius also knows that most Astartes do not venerate the Emperor as God, but as father and greatest of men. Logically that makes sense to Decius, but logic also brings on other conclusions. This is a universe in which gods do exist; the White Consuls are dedicated to defeating their servants. He has seen pict captures of the avitars of the Eldar God of War, and even once saw a living saint. Truly it is not that far of a stretch to believe that mankind has a god too?

The Devastator is shaken from his prayer/philosophical musings by the door opening and the psychotic musings of the Flesh Tearer as he jumps out of the Thunderhaw, followed by the Chaplain. Decius deftly undoes his safety webbing, draws Last Resort, and pulls the bolt halfway back to make sure a round was in the chamber. He then walks up to Marcus and rests a hand on his shoulder, "Come now brother. If your first Vigil was anything like my own, you know that many of the other chapters have devised ways to handle situations in which the Codex is silent. That unpredictability is refreshing."

Decius walks over to the open ramp and steps out into the atmosphere beyond.

Go big or go home. The rules are pretty light on what the grav chute does other than slows your fall from any height. I assume it works like a jump pack in that I can fall at terminal velocity until close enough to the ground/ship and then it will slow my final descent and not like an actual parachute where I'm falling slowly for thousands of feet.

Got my shotgun out to shoot/chain melee attachment any gretchen that get too friendly
