Since Boba was brave enough to post their work I figured I should post my own as well. I make a webcomic on Tapas called John Doe which can be found here:

https://tapas.io/series/John-Doe

It's about two dorks trapped in a computer simulation and the how their friendship develops over time as they try to figure out what's going on. It looks like this:

I'm trying to tweak my process to get more pages done per month (I want to get to 1/week) but for the moment my schedule is a page every 2-3 weeks. It's my first real attempt at this sort of thing so any feedback people have is more than welcome.

By the way did I mention the anime of Ranking of Kings is freaking wonderful? Because it's freaking wonderful. I think I'll start working in gifs when relevant scenes come up in the manga because it's really interesting to see how the adaptation team chose to handle certain aspects.

Fun fact: In this scene he's whistling but since he can't hear he just sort of blows air. It's a really nice little touch.

This scene is particularly great in the anime

E: Now is probably a good time to let people know that from here on out the anime diverges a tad from the manga. Nothing major is changed but they do rearrange when certain backstories are told in order to keep motivations ambiguous and the story more suspenseful. In almost all cases this was the right choice, so much so that in a weird way it kind of feels like the manga spoils the anime in certain places by dropping certain reveals too early. For this reason if you plan to watch the anime at some point you may want to consider checking it out first before reading the rest of the manga since it's definitely the superior version of this story and you will lose the impact of certain scenes if you know what's going on beforehand. Not an absolute necessity to enjoy either version, mind you, but I figured I'd warn people just in case

This tweet has me thinking about the themes of Pinocchio and what it’s trying to say. Basically, I’m pretty sure that the movie not “defeating” the coachman at the end and freeing the children was a deliberate choice and that doing so would actually undermine the story the movie was trying to tell.

This is probably obvious to most people but the weird happenings in Pinocchio aren’t (just) because the writer enjoys surreal characters and situations. They are metaphors designed to teach kids lessons about the importance of listening to your parents, staying in school, etc. The Pleasure Island part of the movie is no exception. Pinocchio skips school and abdicates his responsibilities under the delusion that he can fart around and play forever with zero cost. The consequences of this are that he and the other boys that tried this are turned into donkeys and forced and forced to do hard labor for the rest of their lives. Essentially this is a metaphor for how dropping out of school irl can lead to fewer opportunities and eventually outright exploitation by a deeply predatory system of wage labor.

The coachman in this metaphor is essentially an avatar of capitalist exploitation itself. A predatory figure who will take advantage of your bad decisions for his own benefit. With this in mind, it makes far more sense to me that he gets away unscathed at the end. You don’t really “defeat” the coachman, he is eternal. Yes, someone probably *should* take him down at some point but this is a story for children and expecting a nine year old to overthrow capitalism is… a bit much. For most people “victory” over the coachman is staying in school and avoiding him in the first place. Likewise the greatest “victory” Pinocchio can expect within this metaphor is to escape the situation he’s found himself in. It’s less cathartic than throwing the coachman off a cliff and freeing the kids, but it better serves the cautionary tale the movie is trying to tell.

Anyways, just wanted to get these thoughts out of my head thanks for attending my TED talk. You may resume posting your horse transformation porn.

Religion sucks but most of the stuff you are mad about would still happen even if religion didn't exist because for conservatives religion is less of a real ideology and more a system of rationalizations for reactionary things they'd believe anyways. For example, look at how conservatives shifted their anti-gay rhetoric from "jesus hates this" arguments to "they are doing child grooming" over the years since most people don't care what God thinks on the matter anymore. The actual text of their chosen holy book never really mattered all that much (and was in many ways written directly in opposition to people like them, which is hilarious).

And now you know Queen Hiling's terrible secret: She's actually a really good mom and the best character in the series. The way they set her up as Cercei Lanister and then do a complete 180 is one of my favorite twists of all time.

Also, this is the first major scene that is shifted around in the anime (E: Actually: I think Kage's backstory gets moved up to just before the duel with Daida). In the anime Boji wakes up and has tomorrow's update while still injured. It's a VERY good choice and an incredible kick to your emotional balls (but more on that tomorrow I guess). This scene happens the next night and you don't actually see who heals him at the time. Instead the queen's intentions are kept ambiguous which really makes her actions in the next few chapters seem potentially malevolent. Again, a good thing because eventually you DO see these scenes and suddenly all her actions are re-framed as her trying to act in Boji's best interest. This is why I say the manga feels like it spoils the anime. This scene in the was SUCH a mind gently caress when you see it in the anime's context.

The anime also adds this fantastic bit of bonding which I love to death.

E: Actually now that I think about it that scene might be in the manga later on as part of another character's backstory. Either way it's adorable.

One of the best things in RoK is that just about everyone has hidden depths.
Another is that unique visual style, one of the reasons I hate 99.9% of anime is because how samey everything looks.

A shocking amount of anime is made by people who's only interest is consuming anime and the result is a TON if shows that are copies of copies of copies of Sword Art Online. And it's a problem on every level, not just aesthetically either. It's why shows like RoK that are trying to do something sincere and unique stand out so much.

So the anime gets a lot of credit for some really good action scenes but I think where it really shines is it's use of facial expressions. This scene is a really good example of this. Look at how well they animated Boji's reaction to being told by Kage he wants to be his friend.

^^^ Boji understands Kage by reading his weird mouth thing. Kage understands Boju just because. It's possibly a shadow clan thing?

CzarChasm posted:

OK another Bojii question (I'm really enjoying it, so I'm hoping to learn more)

He seems to be treated like he's...simple, can't talk, and is deaf

That one is confusing me, because when the kids are teasing him, one of the things the kids are told is that he can't hear what they are saying. When he tries to vocalize it's just "Auh".

But he responds to the kids asking him to "say something" by trying to vocalize.

During the fight with the prince, he hears and understands the jeers of the crowd calling him out on his cheap tactics, but doesn't seem to really mind until his teacher signs to him that he's being unsporting. Bojii doesn't sign back, but acknowledges by trying to fight fair, so he understood what he was being told.

And he seems to have a connection with Kage, where they can understand each other, even when all of Bojii's talking is the same "auh" as always. I get that Kage is very clever and might just be picking up on body language, but it's almost like when someone is talking to a droid in Star Wars and the response is beeps and bloops, but there's a conversation there.

I'm just trying to wrap my head around what is actually happening here. My guess is that he's much deeper than what it seems at first.

You pretty much nailed it. The short version is that Boji is actually quite a bit smarter than he appears which will get more apparent as the series goes on. His speech issues are linked to his hearing issues, which is a real challenge deaf people have I'm pretty sure. After all, how would you know how to properly make the sounds in a sentence if you've never heard words spoken before? You might be able to piece together syllables and such based on mouth movements but figuring out the actual sounds being made would be really hard. He can read lips though which is why he's able to understand the people around him despite them not using sign language.

The anime cuts the little bit of narration explaining the demon which I think works better. I like the idea that there is no precedent for this whatsoever and it's exactly as weird to the cast as it is to us.

Also I love that sideways laugh the demon does. It's a great little touch.

I like that it's holding back on what's happening in a literal sense and is instead choosing to run on dream logic. It makes for a unique experience imo.

Boba Pearl posted:

I'm honestly slowly falling out of love with Property of Hate, I need something to be explained, and not just like, a tiny bit of the weird dreamscape they're in, but what are even the basic rules of this universe? Which sounds crazy because show don't tell, but I can't even tell if there's a society. We have no idea what the color juicing was for, and we're learning that Radio Man is the protagonist and the kid is the audience insert. I need it to get somewhere, anywhere.

Then again, I like the comics where everyone talks about their feelings and trauma dump on each other.

Or if the kid is a hero of some sort, can we see them do something? Anything?

It's still pretty early so I think it's a bit too soon to be expecting explanations about too many things. Especially a comic like this that is largely metaphors and dream logic. My guess though would be that we're seeing a person coping with some adverse life event but expressed through characters which represent different aspects of their personality. Kind of like that twitter comic with the submissive cat everybody hates.

That said, I *do* think TPOH would benefit from more solidly explaining where they're going, what TV guy ostensibly hopes to accomplish, what's at stake, and a general sense of what they can expect to encounter along the way. You need to understand the decisions people are making in order to invested in them.
