Speaking of MM&O, I decided to pick up Megahex, One More Year, and Amsterdam at the Fantagraphics booth at ECCC today. Turns out the guy next to me was actually Simon Hanselmann. He wasn't there as a guest or anything, just happened to be there in front of the booth. He kindly signed all three books, and gave me a copy of Performance for free. And said 'Cheerio' when I left. Didn't realize he was an Aussie.

ilysespieces posted:Anyone have Megahex that can send me (user username @gmail)/post page 62? I'm p sure that set of pages has been posted here before, but I bought the book off Google Play Books and that page has a giant black square through the bottom 2/3 of the page. I'm almost positive it's not intentional, since it cuts through the second two in the comic. Thanks.

Thanatosian posted:There was a webcomic that listed manhood trials or rites of passage in order of pain, with one with bullet ants towards the beginning, and something like "having to pretend to like baseball" near the top. I just spent like ten minutes trying to search it without success. I found this SMBC comic, which is just a graph, that mentions pretending to like baseball, but doesn't mention bullet ants. Can't find anything on explainxkcd with those keywords.

canis minor posted:It's good, but sometimes reeks of dad jokes. Still, probably will be buying tome 3 I had never read more than a few of the earlier strips, but I got both volumes in the latest kickstarter. Reading them straight through, the Kiefer arc is probably three times longer than it should be (and it's not even done by the end of V2!). I was hoping for more D&D/RPG send-ups with great art, less "rear end in a top hat cool vampire dominates the main characters using typical abusive partner techniques (and maybe vampire magic)". Should've been staked by Steve by the middle of the second book.

Megillah Gorilla posted:It always annoys me that there's another alt text hidden under the image and, if you're not quick enough to read it before the comic loads, you can't see it again. In the first Oglaf book, both alt-texts are typically present. The main one is printed a couple shades lighter than the page color, and if there is a second one, it's seems even closer to the page color. They're incredibly hard to read, even in good lighting. Thankfully they stopped doing that for book 2, and now both alt-texts are in the same color as the strip title and page number. Speaking of...they're overdue for book 3. Been 4 years since the last one.

Hirayuki posted:Whoa, is that new? I thought she was taking a break from comics these days. She effectively ended Hark! A Vagrant, and wants to come back to humor comics, but she hasn't figured out what they'll be like. The last couple of years were drat hard on her, and I guess she figured it closed that chapter of her life. But she always treated HAV as being separate from her diary comics.

How in the world do you spend 25 minutes covering 3 panels? I doubt Davis even took that long to make the strips.

Randaconda posted:no problem Apparently she showed up on a tabletop show, a podcast with Marc Maron, and most recently gave a talk on the JoCo Cruise in 2016. Her sister killed herself back in 2013, and Allie may have gotten divorced in the last few years. As long as she doesn't succumb to that depression she described in one of her last blog posts, I'm fine with her vanishing from the internet.

Randaconda posted:Yeah, I was afraid of her also committing suicide. If she just wants to disappear, that's cool. That post of hers set off all sorts of alarm bells. It's been a while since I read it, but I seem to remember her thinking she beat depression, but it read like it was mania to me and she was just in a high phase, and she'd fall again. It was really scary to read, despite having no first-hand experience with depression. IIRC, the book had another story after that where she realized what was really going on in her brain and got proper help.

Fools Infinite posted:Was the Kickstarter printing of pictures for sad children that lead to the book burning the first run of the book? I don't remember the Kickstarter but I think I have a physical copy. It was actually the kickstarter for Sad Pictures for Children, the second book of comic. It has a dead wasp in a container embedded in the cover. Partway through shipping, they had their breakdown and threatened to burn a copy of the paid-for book every time someone asked where their copy was. A pile was burned before Max Temkin got involved and finished the shipping, and the person formerly known as John Campbell eventually demanded a living wage from everyone, and AFAIK, vanished from the internet.

I'm outraged because the first telescope without mirrors (a refractor; 1608) predates the first telescope with mirrors (a reflector; 1668)!

Slimy Hog posted:This question, but for pretty much all the others too. First one is Mad Max being homophobic and reacting badly that all these other manly men he's camping with have been with men. Rob Halford is the vocalist for Judas Priest who dresses in leather and came out of the closet in '98. Second was explained. Third, I haven't seen the movie, but I assume it's just funny seeing Lord Humungus making pancakes. Fourth, Kenshiro is from Fist of the North Star, where he rapidly hits his opponents, says "You are already dead", and then several seconds later their body grotesquely swells and they explode. He's adapted his technique for a mundane job. Fifth, electric pokemon sheep are dreaming of robots. I doubt #6 needs explaining. Seventh, the strip's character Jared is basically an ambitionless 20-something who was forced to be a Pokemon game protagonist. There's an ancient urban legend in the first pokemon game that rare pokemon Mew can be found under a truck (the only vehicle seen in the game). An antagonist in the first pokemon movie is a modified clone of Mew.
