Tract #256 - Who's the Real Hater? (2012)

Above: original and current versions.

This promotional tract starts with the story of Jonah preaching to the Assyrians, and goes on to encourage Christians to use Chick tracts to spread the gospel to non-believers, even if the heathens get offended by the truth contained therein. After all, "Chick tracts are not 'hate literature.' They are 'love literature.'"

Who's the Real Hater? is still in print, but as a promotional tract, it isn't for sale. However, free copies are available with mail-orders from Chick Publications. You can read (and order) it here:

Greg loses his job when the company he works for collapses due to "regulations." He and his drunken wife Delores begin a downward spiral into drugs and terrible tattoos, leaving their daughter Julie to fend for herself. Their neighbor Herb also loses his job, and commits suicide. A new family moves in next door. Julie befriends their daughter, Karen, who tells her all about Jesus. Greg and Delores hate Jesus and warn her to stay away from the new neighbors. The rapture strikes at 2:00am while Julie is jumping for Jesus, and she is taken away to heaven, leaving her parents behind.

Tract #259 - Sorry (2013)

The Governor sends an additional 800 inmates to Warden Turner's already overcrowded prison. In order to make room for them, the warden decides to release all of the worst offenders. This seems like an odd solution, but whatever. One of the men released is Frank Morgan. His family, neighbors, and the law enforcement officers who sent him to prison are terrified of what he'll do to them. However, it turns out that Frank was given Chick tracts while incarcerated, and all he wants to do is apologize (and convert) those people he hurt back when he was a bad man.

Seeing all of these posted side by side is fascinating, because it's making me realize what a business Chick was running. I really thought the primary motivator for him was a rather intense devotion to his brand of Christianity, but I'm beginning to see the "buy my poo poo and you'll be a good Christian and not burn eternally" side now.

I think it was a bit of both, but his religious fervor was definitely the main reason he kept at it into his 90s. He self-published tracts for a decade before Chick Publications was incorporated and he could afford to write/ draw full time. Although he published 900,000,000+ tracts over a fifty-five year period, the cost has always been surprisingly low, especially considering the entertainment value! The current cost per tract is 17 cents, and half that if purchased in large quantities. I'm sure he made enough money to live a somewhat comfortable life, but from what I've read, he was not rich. Also, his anti-Vatican stance (among other controversies) got Chick tracts permanently banned from most mainstream Christian bookstores in the 1980s. He repeatedly denounced Billy Graham and popular televangelists for being money-grubbing hypocrites catering to semi-modern values rather than sticking to the King James Version of the Bible and staying focused on saving souls from the clutches of Satan. Jack Chick certainly didn't worry about offending people with his message, and I'm sure it cost him a fortune over the years.

Young Freud posted:

I'm legit disappointed most of his work is promo books and advertising other publications. Like half of them are just reprints of promotional material to get you to buy Chick Tracts.

Most of the promos are pretty rare, so I've never felt like they make up a disproportionate amount of Chick's work. There are 24 promotional tracts by my count, all of them given out for free, and most of them only available for brief periods of time. The promos, especially the older ones, tend to be far more difficult to track down than any of the regular tracts. I'm still missing a few of them, and have never seen most of those come up for trade or sale during my years of collecting these things. If nothing else, the promotional tracts for Alberto Rivera's books and comics are among the craziest, most outrageous, and hilarious Chick tracts! And they were originally given away for free!!

On a somewhat related topic, I enjoy when characters in Chick tracts get saved by reading Chick tracts. It doesn't happen very often, and it adds to the zealous sense of eternal importance Jack Chick ascribed to his beliefs.

That's the last of the tracts for now, although there ought to be a new one published in early March.

I mentioned it much earlier in the thread, but Jack Chick stockpiled a bunch of tracts before he died, enough to continue publishing new titles at the normal rate for the next couple of years. Chick Publications usually releases a new title (as well as a newly revised or reprinted tract) every two months. That means that there are probably a dozen or so unpublished Chick tracts, which will be released every other month until the supply is exhausted. Also, Fred Carter is still drawing new tracts, and revising others (see Sunday Special? above).

Chick may be dead, but his tracts will continue to illuminate and infuriate from beyond the grave. Haw! Haw! Haw!

To bring things full circle, I'm planning on posting more pictures of the first few tracts since I didn't say much about them the first time around. The oversize versions from the 1960's are really rare, and I don't think they're available anywhere else online.

David Daniels will come up a lot more when I post about some of the Chick Publications books, as well as the bi-monthly newsletter Battle Cry.

I'll try to get to those soon, along with the comic books and other miscellaneous stuff. Before I do that, I'm want to post a bit more about the first four Chick tracts since I sort of glossed over them the first time around.

Tract #1 - Why No Revival? (1961)

I posted a bit about this early in the thread:

Nonetheless, it is the foundation for the hundreds of Chick tracts that followed, and deserves a closer look.

Tract #243 - Still No Revival? (2011)

I was only planning on posting more about the first four tracts before moving on to other things, but if anyone wants more pictures or info about any of the other tracts, let me know.

Tract #2 - A Demon's Nightmare (1962)

Above Left: 1962 oversize version, 1965 Indian version (bootleg copy). Right: 1962 medium oversize version, 1972 and 2005 revisions.

I originally posted about A Demon's Nightmare here:

Chick's early tracts were printed in two different sizes, both larger than the standard format used now. The artwork was the same in both sizes, just slightly reformatted to fit the page. The page count in the early titles differed depending on the tract, so artwork was often altered, combined, or completely redrawn to fit the current 24-page standard size. I've compared a random panel from the large, medium, and small sizes below:

Here is the 1962 version:

There is a very rare version from 1965 printed for Christian missionaries in India. This is a photocopy:
