John Hohman
HP: 10/10 MP: 15/15 SAN: 61/99 Luck: 67
Daily San 1/5th: 14/15

Not in the mood for subtly, John bursts into motion recklessly with his gun raised hollering at the top of his lungs toward William "Will you get away from those heathens, they're with those things from the cabin!" Skidding to a stop a good distance away, the old man throws caution to the wind and lets off a masterful double blast of his shotgun. It was a miracle that William didn't have his head filled with shot, but John the cabin slayer's aim is true and his shots neatly send one of the devil's servants sprawling to the ground.

The shotgun's damage was overwhelming - to a human. But there is far less blood from this man given the destruction his body just faced. Chunks of flesh and bone are scattered, his skull and chest peppered by the blast, yet it seems he might remain standing. Only slowly does he topple to the ground.

Fred collapses onto the obliterated corpse, his weight no longer carried by two. The remaining adversary turns and snarls at William, saying "There will be no escaping your fate!"

Valerie steps out from behind a tree, sees one go down, and hammers the trigger at the one still standing. The first shot strikes home, but the recoil and her shaking hands send the other two wide.

Valerie strikes true, and that bullet would have killed a normal man. But again, it seems, these men are harder to kill than the truly living.

The shots rouse William from his mental confusion. His rifle comes up, and he finishes off the last one. Moments later, a third unliving worker pokes his head out near the pit - but he, too, falls to a flurry of righteous gunshots.

Anyone peering within the pit sees a glowing blue crystal surrounded by mining gear:

As the sound of gunshots recedes, you hear a new commotion - yelling from one of the shacks. It's labeled 'Storage'. Muffled screams from several people can be heard within.

Several other shacks surround the area, filled with mining equipment, explosives and the like. A truck is parked near the exit of this place - it looks like the same truck that you stopped a few days ago, to hand over a prisoner to.

John Hohman
HP: 10/10 MP: 15/15 SAN: 61/99 Luck: 67 9
Daily San 1/5th: 14/15

The flurry of combat is over in mere moments, John for his part moving and shooting as yet another member of the fiends occupying the camp pokes their head out, and then he sees the crystal, the one the journal of the creature in the cabin's basement had mentioned, and it becomes clear what must be done. Turning to the younger members of the search party he bellows as the screams start up from within a cabin "See about setting free their prisoners for now, Frederick can be dealt with later." John turns his head back to the hole and mutters "I have work that needs to be done."

Cryptic mutterings made, John marches off toward the assorted crates of mining goods, his hopes fulfilled as he finds a bounty of dynamite ripe for the picking. Gathering a large quantity into a nearby sack, John sets back for the hole and climbs down into it. As he lowers himself down, John works like a man possessed; sticks of dynamite finding their way into just the right places they need to be to cause the most damage. In another reality where John was a horrible cultist, the hands of his dark God would have already removed the dark crystal below and freed his dark master. Thankfully for the world John is rather sick of these undead heathens, and within a few minutes he's accidentally lined the pit with dynamite expertly, the only thing left to do was to toss his lantern into the pit and start running.

The report of his rifle firing rouses William out of his fugue state.

"What the..." he mutters as he looks around. "Stay alert, there are more people in that shack!"

He slowly approaches the source of the voices, rifle readied.

Valerie reloads her pistol with shaky fingers, fumbling bullets a few times. This wasn't how she'd envisioned their little excursion into the woods ending. Whatever was going on here, it was creating monsters. But if there was still a chance to save someone innocent from all this, they had to take it. Every second mattered now.

She marches up to the shed and yanks the door open, gun in hand.

I think I'm the only one who hasn't gone insane from being the first one in, so it's probably my turn.

Epilogue

1925

William and Valerie quickly found the hostages. Among them was Jane Strong, the kidnapped lady, who had quite a story to tell. It all started with her being snatched by the Harris gang and taken to their cabin in the woods. Not long after, all the commotion attracted attention from the miners - who had become undying servants of Glaaki. Jane had been taken to be made into another eternal servant of that hideous god. Though Jane's experience was harrowing, it sparked a lifelong interest in the occult which led her to places far darker than that lake amidst the trees.

With Jane were the son-and-father duo, Brian and Arthur Hall. They were, sadly, quite insane from their experiences, and they would never be the same again. Even further gone was the lone sniper that you captured on the first night, Eugene Clayton. After turning him over to a miner on the road, he was also brought here for later rebirth. The sheriff would take him into custody, but the remainder of his life would be spent in an asylum, whispering madly about a Union soldier.

Of Frederick there was no sign - he had slipped away somehow, amidst the freeing of hostages and preparations for the explosion. John's work completed, the blast buried Glaaki's crystal prison deep beneath the earth. John, Valerie and William returned as heroes, the girl returned and the Harris gang defeated. The truth of what happened remained forever concealed.

2017

In time the reservoir was completed, submerging the crystal's final resting place and the entire surrounding forest underwater. Yet to this day one man labors beneath the waves, never surfacing to draw a breath, only pulling aside one rock at a time in a desperate search for his master's crystal prison. Meanwhile, those in surrounding communities lift a glass of reservoir water to their lips, unaware of the expanding taint of Glaaki...

Thanks for playing! I left out details of your own character's fates...all except for poor Frederick.

Traumatized by the experience, Valerie blew off her meeting with the bookseller and returned early to Hollywood. While her performances from this period were good, her nerves were shot and she became emotionally unstable, earning her a reputation as a diva that soon overshadowed her talents and desirability.

By 1929, she was just one more washed up starlet who couldn't afford to turn down work from any source. For example, the odd, charming man with the foreign last name, she could never quite remember it right. He'd come to visit her personally and told her she was just perfect for the lead in his next film. It was a screen adaptation of a little known foreign play called The Yellow Sign. All expenses paid. Solid contract. All she had to do was sign.

His assistant met her at the airport and handed her a copy of the script.

"Just read through it whenever you've got the time, filming starts in a week. First half's a little slow, but the second half, well, it's gonna wow ya. Trust me, it's somethin' else. This could relaunch your career! It's big deal, really, they're gonna do a special private first screening for a bunch of Wall Street bigwigs this October! You could really hit it big, Val!"

Thanks Ritorix, I had fun with it!

Pushed to the brink of madness, John's life seemed like it would go off the rails in a major way, but lucky as he was, the farmer managed to step back from the precipice and retain a grasp on his sanity.

It was tough for John to return to the farm, the reward money ablated some concerns for a time, but his deadbeat son made off with the lion's share, absconding to Hollywood with his childhood sweetheart, inspired in part by Valerie's appearance in the relatively small town.

In the coming years John began to take trips into the woods with some frequency. His little hunting trips bringing him along the same route the search party had taken on its original journey. John remained a quiet guardian over the lake until the day, many years later, that heart failure claimed him and the good Lord dragged him away from his vigil.

This was fun, thanks Ritorix.

The adventure had taken a harsh toll on young William, eroding what was left of his tenuous grip on sanity. John could tell that something was very wrong with his farmhand and in a true display of Christian charity offered him to stay at the farm for a while, until he got better. The young soldier refused, he felt the need to move on from this place, the further the better.

William drifted across the country for a while, his rifle hidden in his bundle and never far away. He did menial jobs and small time robberies to stay alive. Somehow though, his travels always brought him back to the old forest. He'd come to, firing his rifle at the trees in a desperate attempt to slay the darkness that reigned over the trees, just as it did over his mind.

One evening he had hitched a ride up to Arkham and was wandering the University grounds. He had been careless and the barrel of his rifle clearly jutted out from his bundle. A few scared students called the police on him and William was taken to the Sanitarium, though his name is conspicuously absent from the records.
