The 'Some in the name of immersion(???).' link is a hotlink to loverslab, and broken besides. ...which, thinking on it, certainly fits the thread's themes, but still.

That sounds pretty accurate to a tv my family had when I was a kid, but I wouldn't want a mod to recreate that sensation.

That is somehow less horrifying than a lot of the abominations here, but the shaders/textures/normalmap/something needs tweaked to make that look less like a rubber suit. Or maybe that's just the modder's fetish? Either way,Section Z posted:Put a drat shirt on, lady.

To reduce the amount of instability in your final build, you'll want to spread out the crazy across a wider area if you can. There's lots of extra dungeons and content packs that load themselves in across the wild (especially in the massive unused space around the north sea). It's nice to load in and have skeletons and sanics (warning, this is just as loud as you'd expect) in your starting race choices, but the more you front-load the crazy mods the more likely you are to crash a lot right at the start and be unable to fully experience them.

Looking it up, hahaha, poo poo, THAT art. Yeah, that style is really loving ugly, but I love it. It's so campy and weird and gross, and it's also over-expressive and wild. Art can be ugly but still have strong merits and be good art, and I loved just looking at that weird poo poo. I seem to recall that an awful lot of the novels I grew up with with that cover art were unfortunately also of the 'campy, weird, and gross' variety, in hindsight.

Unarmed is legitimately really fun in almost every TES mod I've played that bothers to make it an option. There's something viscerally satisfying about just punching your way through all the ridiculous fantasy cliches and obnoxious voice acting and poorly-made modded quests and giant monsters and such.

GunnerJ posted:So here's an interesting new development: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=933055903 As someone who works on by-commission basis, the weirdest thing about that to me is the price point; exactly what kind of 'custom mod' work are you getting for what would be, generously, maybe a day's pay? Even just a swap-job on names, portraits, and traits in a 4x game seems like it would be pushing it on that payment structure. How many people are even going to be interested? Even as a hobbyist thing, that's an odd approach. Granted, I don't work with people buying 4x games. For all I know there's a hardcore base of Train Simulator-style grognards willing to poo poo out $30 for twenty minutes worth of Ctrl+h work multiple times a day and this person is going to be printing money until the interest dries up.

GunnerJ posted:Looking at it from that perspective I don't see how this makes sense for anyone. Even if I would consider paying for a custom mod, I would not pay anywhere near at least half the price of a full game, and as you point out, the mod maker is not getting much for the work needed to make anything worth the price. What the hell? Commission work is weird like that; most people drastically undercharge for creative commission work, which is a separate issue, but alternatively, you have to be offering something the customer really, really wants and can't find elsewhere for it to be anywhere near worth the amount that they need to pay you to make it worth YOUR time. It's hard to imagine that niche lies in a custom $30 4x mod of any kind. I mean, that's part of why crowdfunding and other alternative payment structures are such a big thing; it's much easier to get a lot of people with similar interests to pitch in a couple of bucks than to try to find one person to front the whole cost. This seems to be especially true in venues like modding, where it also helps to sidestep legal concerns; you can still accept artistic patronage while releasing your work for free. I really don't think this person has thought their offer out, unless they're just doing some quick pump and dump scams, in which case, loving lol; the return on the effort STILL sounds spectacularly low.

Okay, so, like. Dwarf Fortress already has children. A mod that adds that functionality to a different Dwarf Fortress-like game doesn't sound like the worst possible thing, on the surface of it. But boy oh boy is the selected passage troubling.

With a small, well-managed fortress, DF settlements can last two or three decades, long enough for a generation of children to be born, grow up, join the workforce, and succumb to FUN. Relevant to the thread, however, you tend to run out of interesting things for that fort to do LONG before that point without some serious modding to flesh out some sort of side goal. I would recommend the hilarious and ill-fated Pokemon mod, but good luck completing your dorf pokedex when half of the little shits breathe fire or are horrible combat monstrosities angry at man and god.
