it also didn't help that they kept looking forward to new games in the series for better functionality (especially PC versions) and not only did the later games not work as well but they completely removed the basic systems that the vgcw shows relied upon

i mean, part of the reason why dark souls messages are good is that you have to shove together prewritten words so you have to be creative if you want to be juvenile. that mod just lets you post arbitrary messages and i doubt the people who want to be lovely would bother to even be wink-nudge lovely like that

it's a modding tool and it'll be as good as whoever's making the conversions manually. there's some pretty bad results they're using for portal as their official showcase game, but it's far from impossible to imagine better results this is the one that particularly sticks in my craw:
