That sounds like a joke but seriously Skyrim with Dragon's Dogma's combat would be the best RPG ever made.

And yes of course there is flouride ridden water thats also poisonous and some other weird water that has somthing or other in it that makes it more hydrating then anything else in existence or somthing. Where did it all go wrong? Was that where it went all wrong?

It also seems harder to make full-on total conversion mods now. A lot of games either don't allow modding or have modding frameworks that only allow parts of the game to be changed. Foo example, if you look at Valves games, HL2 came out with a SDK that allowed you to make changes to or rewrite most of the game logic. Their newer games only have tools to make maps or change out assets.

Well it depends on the game really. I mean the reason we see so many mods for the Elder Scrolls and Fallout games is that they have an incredibly flexible modding framework, not because they have an especially dedicated fanbase (they do, but not more than any other popular series). So really it's just that the popular modding platform has shifted because it just happens that the easiest thing to mod these days is an RPG rather than an FPS.

Girl Genius end-ran around the ethical qualms of not resurrecting a person because they were politically significant by societies having laws that vacate any titles you hold at death, even if you're later resurrected. Hope you didn't abuse your family and connections! (Or you can cover up the fact you died :ninja:) Presumably radical longevity treatments and credentials that are a simple matter of competency and experience don't present the same legal kerfuffles.

See I feel like it would be more interesting to tell a story based on a society society where resurrection IS fairly commonplace, and what the consequences of that would be, rather than trying to have it mirror historical settings more or less exactly. I think in standard D&D rules there are a few exceptions for even the most powerful resurrection spells (I think the main one is that the person has to WANT to be resurrected for it to work - although I also think death by old age also can't be reversed by resurrection? That one might be a bit fuzzy because of all the various ways people can extend their natural lifespan in that setting so what constitutes "old age" is vague), so it's not like nobody would die ever, but it also means that you can't just kill someone to make your problems go away. It also kind of suggests that if you do kill someone accidentally or in the heat of the moment, the punishment would be a lot less severe than real life.

I dunno if anyone who has ever written a D&D book has ever really played with that though. They aren't exactly written by top tier authors. Or even top tier by fantasy standards.

Yeah to be honest the most interesting mod stuff gets made on the games that aren't being updated anymore, because the mod authors don't have to worry about their poo poo getting broken so they can get REALLY deep into hacking things together and learning the ins and outs of the engine. I imagine even when SKSE gets released for the HD remaster, most of the modding will still be done on the old Skyrim, just because that's the one people are already familiar with.

there's a lot of archeological study that goes into this sort of thing that it's dreadfully obvious not a single 'post apocalyptic' game maker is familiar with

the short version of it is that even with minimal material and tools people can and do make some pretty elaborate and comfortable shelters if they've got a reason to stay put in one place, and that reason comes from trade approximately 100% of the time. so if you're hanging out in a village, farming and trading, then your poo poo will probably be at least reasonably clean and you're not going to be sleeping on the floor on a mattress that is very clearly infested with lice. if you're not trading with anyone outside your band and are in effect a hunter-gatherer then your poo poo will be ramshackle because you fully expect to have to abandon it at a moment's notice because game is moving.

but nah instead everything just sucks because you don't have table saws anymore or some poo poo

The thing is basically that people have certain expectations about what "post-apocalyptic" looks like, and most of those expectations are calibrated to "immediately after the bombs fell". So I'm pretty sure the developers know that it's not at all realistic that people are still living in houses with giant holes in the walls and dirt and dead leaves all over the floor 200 years after the war, but it's what people expect the game to look like so that's what they do.

The Cheshire Cat

See I actually think the most interesting ground for the series WOULD be to set it literally right after the bombs fell, when society has JUST collapsed and people haven't formed replacement social structures yet. But apparently Bethesda has a thing about never making prequels so instead they'll just keep pushing the timeline farther down and so we'll always have slavers and cannibals and the Brotherhood of Steel.
